I am using standard servo's on all my 1/4 scale WWI planes. 4.8 batteries etc. This includes my 1/4 scale Fokker DVIII.

Thanks Prop Nut. Just for clarification, by standard you mean something like Futaba 3000's or the like....in that range? The only reason I bought the couple of 1/4 size servos, was due to the fact that many posts I read indicated that for those larger surfaces (rudder/elevator), this was what should be installed. Maybe I should have just used what I already had. And by 4.8 batteries you mean a 4.8 volt pack.....4 cells. If so, should I increase the cell size to boost the MAH? Thanks for your input.

ZZ.

I use a six volt pack on my large heavy aircraft especially if they have heavy duty servos and I also use higher ma ratings. The added volts give more power and speed to the servos and the added ma gives longer time between charges. Norm

Ok...thats interesting. What size cells R U using Norm? And at what mah? And with the six cell pack, how many flights can you get in before needing a recharge? You say you use the bigger servos....would those be 1/4 size? Sorry for all the questions, but I'm a babe in the woods with this size bird and the necessary electronics, and I want to be sure I'm not fouling something up. I have even more questions, but I dont want to swamp you guys all at once !! Ok.......just a few more: Is it ok to put the battery pack in the engine compartment? I know your supposed to try to keep all electronic components as far from the engine (12 INCHES IF POSSIBLE) as you can. But I might need to stick it there to avoid unnecessary ballast. Will this be ok or create interference? Is it ok to mix servo sizes within the same system...ie, 1/4 scale bigger ones, with smaller (what I call standard, futaba 3000 type) servos? Ahhhhh. so many questions so little time. Thanks for all the help. These electronic issues are really the last obstacle to finishing this up. I'll try to post a pic of the Ac in the bones here shortly, as soon as the weather clears and I can get it outside for a decent shot. TIA for all the help.

ZZ

This seems to be the norm on models of short-nosed WWI rotary aircraft. It's that way on my Snipe and you can see the batterie up front in the photo of the 1/3 scale Pup Spais is concidering.

I don't know much about 1/4 scale but it seems that for WWI stuff people just use standard size servos. These models are light and just don't fly that fast and so there isn't as much force being applied to the flight surfaces.

Hi I have various packs that I made up myself and they are about 2,000 ma Nih cells wired in series so they give me 6 volts. Many modelers don't know this but almost all transisiter equipment was designed with a base voltage of 6 volts. the only reason the industry settled on 4.8 was to save weight and cost. Everything I have ever used works better on 6 volts. I use a variety of heavy duty servos not necessarily 1/4 scale servos but ones that have ball bearings and metal or carbon gears. You can also use two independant servos on the same surface for redundancy. I have never lost a servo except by breaking it in my large airplanes. I always cycle a new servo many times before I install it. If it is going to fail it will fail right away. Most problems with servos is hitting the surfaces and jamming the gears.
On my electrics I stuff most of components in the cowl area, On my greasy models I put the good stuff in the cabin. Most of my dirty engines have been scrapped in favor of electrics, there is no comparison. Norm

You guys rock! Thanks for the details Norm, that really clarifies things as far as my battery pack decision, 6 volts sounds good to me and it will probably give the larger servos a little more umph. I have been following the Snipe build Abu, and its looking great, and I won't hesistate now to put the battery up in the engine compartment as I had originally planned. As you said, with short nosed WWI types it is really a must. Right now, before fuselage covering but with all other components in place except electronics, she's weighing around 13.5 lbs.....and thats with engine and fuel tank installed, and wing covered but not stained. This is very close to my target of keeping the AUW in the 14lbs vicinity. All said and done, if it ends up at 15, or 15.5lbs finished, I wont be dissappointed.

Ok, some early shots like I promised. Told ya it was wierd! These were all I could get before the camera died.

There's a lot of work left to do so she kinda looks like Frankenstien right now. But that will all change.

Regards ZZ.

Very impressive model! Is this scratch-built or does someone out there make a 1/3 scacle DVIII kit?

Too true Abu, too true. Hey Wings, sharp DVIII! What does it weigh and what do you have pulling it?

ZZ.

PS, Abu, whats the projectd "fly date" for the Snipe? That one could be a museum piece when your done with it. Fine work.

Huh? Why worry about the future when I'm having so much fun now! I guess it'll come as no surprise to anyone when I admit that I'd rather build than fly anyday (and usually do). But I've promised Chris that I'll get it to the bare bones stage by Xmas -- but after than I'll take my time getting the details ready. Some people prefer to fly first and detail later. I figure I may only get one shot at flying (and flying photos) so it better by in all its glory for that one trip!

The timing for a maiden will (eventually) be dictated by many factors ranging from weather in Japan to my vacation schedule.

Well, I don't really want to let it get to that stage but I do like to take every build as an opportunity to expand on my skill set. I've alreadly learned a ton of stuff on this one.
