Status: offline 		Yet another 'voice' wrt Fokker D-VIII color schemes; when building my 1/4 scale BUSA D-VIII, I used the following references in an attempt to be realistic:
FOKKER D-VIII--Windsock Datafile #25
Aircraft in Profile--Volume 3, Profile 67
German Aircraft of the First World War--Peter Gray/Owen Thetford
Many, many trips to Google
I found numerous references/pictures showing the solid 'olive' painting of the D-VIII wing, but nothing to support any other wing treatment. So, mine is finished as shown in the attached pic. That being written, these are models built by individuals and as such could be painted solid pink if the builder is so moved.
WRT to flying, I really am interested in the various comments-IMO, the D-VIII is not for the faint of heart, especially in a cross wind. Never, never try to 3-point land it!! On mine, I find that the axle airfoil will partially blank-out the elevator while at a 3-point landing attitude. Keep some power on, make a wheels landing, let the rolling speed bleed off, back on the stick, and stay alert!

Status: offline 		Hi guys, you must remember that the German squadrons flying any airplane, including the very few D-8s that were out there, did not have tailwheels and did not take off of hard runways. They operated from flying fields, read leveled out farm fields. There was not a cross wind problem because they always took off into and landed into the wind. The tail skid dug a furrow into the ground which kept the tail from swinging back and forth as the skid was in the groove. Today's replicas have tail wheels, at least the ones I have seen. Back in 1918 full stall landings were made so that the skid would hit the ground and held there with full up elevator and blasts from the rotary engines. Norm

Status: offline 		Of course there were many aircraft of that era on floats including many WWI types but to my knowledge never a D-VIII. One of the visual stampings of the parasol is the large landing gear. Replace the gear with floats and it changes the whole look of the aircraft. In fact, floats were used on some airplanes before WWI including the early Schneider Cup racers. Even aircraft carriers were conceived before WWI. So I guess they aren't as preposterous as it may seem. Norm

Status: offline 		Nice pics everyone. Hookemut, did you extend the nose moment of your DVIII? It looks a fraction longer than average to me. Maybe its just me, or the angle. Or maybe the wing is set back a bit. All I know is mine seems a bit shorter. I thought about extending it a bit to help with the nose weight issue, (ie eliminate it) but didn't because of the weight of the engine I'm using. Homelite 25cc's are notoriously heavy. So I kept the scale short nose moment. hope I won't regret it as it still seems it may need some ballast.

PS. Reading you guys comments on the flight characteristics of this thing makes me feel good and knock kneed when it comes to thinking about maidening it. . I have a feeling though if I don't destroy it while working out the weight/trim issues, it should fly ok.....that is if the engine has enough gusto. Gee.......is that all?

I just followed BUSA's plans, changed nothing, so it must be just the viewing angle.
Bit of data wrt my D-VIII-I started out with a well-broken in Zenoah G-23, but rapidly learned that there is lots of drag on this model- the G-23 wouldn't cut it. Next came a fairly-well broken in Zenoah G-26 swinging an APC 17x6 prop. That is ok, but gentle turns are called for- I can loop, but only from a shallow dive. Split-S, hammerheads, rolls, spins are all ok. Landing in a crosswind, like the Dr-1, icht sehr verboten! The BUSA D-VIII is one tough bird-those cabanes are very strong!
For me, I land as tho I were going to make a touch-and-go. When the wheels are firmly planted, I idle back, bleed off rolling speed, and go to full up to plant the tail. Be of stout heart, and remember-the Herr Baron is watching!! LOL
