Status: offline 		Brief update. All systems are go and I will likely do a few test runs (and maybe maiden flight) very soon, possibly this weekend. After debugging the engine issues mentioned earlier, life intervened and I haven't had the chance till now to progress any further. Anyhoo, she's ready to give it a go now that I've completed the control surface throw adjustments and final engine test runs. It all looks good. Hopefully I'll be back here with a good word very soon.

I will go straight away to the shop and remove the 33cc Homelite from my 1/4 Pup, and the 33cc Homelite from my 1/4 Fokker DVII and the 34cc FourStroke Briggs and stratton from my Fokker DVIII and the 25cc Poulan from my Bud Nosen 1/4 scale Aeronca and the 25cc Homelite from my Massive Mongo Stik and the 25cc Featherlite (Leafblower) from my Ultimate Bipe and the 25cc Ryobi from my 1/4 scale Flybaby...hmm, did I miss any? Well I will be sure to clean those out if I did. To think, after all these years of having a ball using conversions that I was wasting my time.

Just a gentle ribbing Norm, what doesnt work for some does for others.

just discovered this beautiful threat.

I'm also building a scratch Fokker D8 in scale 1\3.5 The airframe is 60% ready at the moment, and planned to be ready next year. I am not a fast builder. The power for this one will be the ZG62 with EI.

The collor scheme planned is the following Dutch.

Status: offline 		Hi, The modeler who had the problem with the weed wacker installation wrote back that when he stripped down the engine it indeed had worn rings, a sign of one of the mass produced engines sold at discount centers. The engines you have are not in that category. Over the years I have used many weed wacker engines most with good results as I bought them all new and name brands. Some of the best were Styl (sp) resurrected from a City Cementry department. Extreme quality, the worst were the $79 specials from WalMart. Their heads were held on with two machine screws and the quality went down from there. I flew nothing but giant scale gas for many years and am now conveting my favorite models to electric. First to fly was my 23 pound Super Cub at 1.4 scale. I had a giant AXi and A123 cells in that one. I have removed all of my Quad 35s and US Engines and sold them on eBay to finance the conversion costs. Norm

I have been magazine editor for about 30 years and simply do not get upset over letters written to me. Have at it.

Teus! That thing is a monster! It looks great! I too am building a 1/3rd scale (Sopwith Triplane) and I know what you mean about it taking a long time to get things done. Very nice so far.

Like the other folks here, I am very interested in its specifications.....wingspan....engine choice(you said zg62? what is that displacement? 62cc?)...etc..etc. Please indulge us. And keep sending pics of your progress! Also..thanks for the encouragement Prop Nut, I will definately keep you guys posted. Gotta switch hats to test pilot mode now.....hehe.

A little bit more info on my Fokker project as aked:

The D8 is own design is scale 1/3.5 using the Phillip Drews drawings as a guide. You might think why scale 3.5 The reason is that the firtst thing I bought was the spun alluminum cowl from the Toni Clark pup, so scale was set! (original cowl 1080mm : TC cowl 305mm = scale 3.54.

Wingspan: 2417mm
Engine: Zenoah 62cc with electronic ignition.
Weight: approx. 12-14kg????
Wingprofiles used: center gottingen 386 Tip gottingen 388.

I'm trying to follow the scale outline's and structure but the major goal is to achieve a good looking (near)scale model whitch I can fly with every week That's also why I made the wing 3 peace. Centre section stays on the model so I have only to fit the outerpanels on the field before flying.

Status: offline 		Hey fella's. Well, I have more good news than bad, so thats a decent ratio. Anyway, I took the DVIII out to the strip yesterday as the wind was calm at dusk to do some test taxis and maybe a maiden. Anyway, I got her all ready and fired up the engine, which was purring sweetly. Oddly enough I pre tested this thing in just about every way, EXCEPT with the wing on and the engine running. I tested the wing seperately for operation but without the engine putting along. So as I'm prepping I see my ailerons twitching away.................(damn.) Long story short, they are the only things glitching so I've got to go through and check my extensions/leads/connections/servos.....etc...etc...etc. I've got a seperate post over in the questions and answers section running to help me de-bug this, so thats where I will be for a while. Well thats the bad news....and its not the end of the world....just REALLY annoying. The good news is she almost flew! After letting it run on the strip for a while the glitching died down a bit to a point where I thought I might see how fast she could go before throttling down and rolling out. I did a few up and downs, turning around at each end. On the last one, I really gave her some throttle, and about midway down the strip, both me and my observer (my brother) saw the wheels get light and do that little take off bounce, (you know, the two or three wheel skips that occur right before she comes off the deck!!) Woo, that was cool, but freaked me out cause I dont want this thing to fly off with a aileron glitch!!! So I chopped the throttle at about the second skip. Unfortunately this caused a swerve (your not supposed to abort here!!!hehe) and the plane veered right and nosed over onto its back. Due to the resilience of this type of structure though, there was ZERO damage. I was afraid I brkoe the prop or dinged the wing but........nothing! So that was great, and it seems she may fly ok......now if I can just get this annoying bug smashed, we'll be all set. As usuall, I'll keep you guys posted. Thanks for all of your help.

Status: offline 		Glad to hear that there was no damage ZZ. Not sure what to say about the glitching, I had a simular problem with my elevator. I had the antena run out along a servo wire, after redoing my routing the problem disappeared. I added a PCM reciever just in case though. Have you checked the usual culprits? You dont want a metal servo rod going to the motor, you want all radio equiptment at least 12" from the engine, etc etc. I peronsally think that the metal cheeks that the kit comes with may cause reciever glitches. You might try to remove them for a field test with the motor running and see if there is a problem.

Status: offline 		Thanks Prop Nut. After some extensive reading and research, as well as some help from the guys over in the Q&A forum, I've got a plan of action. My first focus will be the shielding of this particular components (ie...the wings') extensions. They are non twisted and non shielded cables that I am now sure are acting simply as an RF interference antenna. My first order of business will be to pull the extensions, and then twist or braid them as tightly as possible. Then before reinstallation, I will wrap them tightly with a few layers of aluminum foil for shielding purposes, and then reinstall. Thats the current plan for this week. I'll let you know if I see any improvements. If not then things get a bit more complex. Lets hope for the easy fix!

Status: offline 		Alrighty, time for another brief update. I pulled all of the wing servo extensions which were unshielded and unbraided, twisted each, then wrapped each in a few layers of reynolds wrap aluminum foil to serve as shielding, then reinstalled each. Im glad these are hidden cause it was starting to look like a NASA space probe project by the time I was done with the shielding. After reassembly, I fired up for a test run and watched the ailerons closely. (I hope someone who is having this same problem might be aided by my efforts here.) The twitching was diminished......but unfortunately still too prevalant for my comfort. No full deflections, but still a definite interference induced and regular twitch. So....what now? Well, then I moved to the source of the interference(logically), the spark plug area, and proceeded to shield the entire spark plug cap. After this quick adjustment I fired her up again and........amazing......almost complete glitch removal! Still an occasional very minor movement, but VERY signifigant, almost complete improvement. So...as it stands I will proceed to shield the entire plug cap AND wire to the magneto. And also as another test, I will run a ground wire up from the engine block to the shielding in the wing to see if it helps at all. Oh, incidentally I also removed the "kill wire" which was capped but hanging free in the engine compartment, maybe this helped things as well. (You never know what will help or hurt with glitches, and I'm hoping perhaps my description here might help someone else out who's having similar problems.) Anyway, after all of this, maybe I can come back with some sort of maiden report! Thanks to all for your help/advice/encouragment.
