Back with some images of the finished dummy rotary Oberursal. Its by no means museum scale, but it should pass for the real thing fairly decently as long as folks are a few feet away. Not too shabby considering its made from scrap aluminum, pvc pipe, and cardboard tubing. I'm thinking after this addition....and upgrading the undercarriage fairing and wheels, I'll fly her a bit more...then onto the cockpit work!

Fresh can of Worms!
Was looking at Ospery's Richtofen's Circus, page 111 and saw this stitching seam on an E.V 152/17's wing center.....hmmm, everyone's said that the wing was NOT fabric covered.
RE-read this whole thread, and lookee here, Stephan Stec's E.V also has a stitching seam in the cutout to the wing above the cockpit.

What if the E.V's were fabric covered, and the replacement D.VIII wings were not?

OK, prove me wrong.........

Research by our own deljon (aka Del Johnson, of GTM 1/3 Triplane Build Thread fame) found that the wing cutout on the Fokker E.V / D.VIII is a leather-padded area. He used this to his advantage on his 1/4 scale Fokker E.V that he built incorporating the streaked wing finish - he had a second receiver and battery pack hidden in the wing (rather than separate aileron cables snaking up through the cabanes) and accessed his switch and charging jack by moving this padding.

I think you'll probably spot this if you take another look at some of the photos. Unfortunately, there aren't very many really good photos of the E.V / D.VIII, so good detail shots are tough to come up with.

Fabric covering doesn't really make sense if you think about it, as there isn't any really good way to hold the fabric to the structure. No way to sew it to the wing (i.e., rib stitching), and they couldn't really "glue" it like we modelers do.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

Thanx, Lee....I thought of that later....found another good photo of it with Udet in D.VIII after the War......tho that's along way from the pilot to be a paddad area.

Udet's postwar DVIII may have been covered with fabric, however the wartime EVs and DVIIIs were (almost) certainly not. Please check 1.design drawings.2 Bill of materials.3Crash investigation report. None of them ever mention fabric.

jtisch, If any of those items are uploadable, it would be greatly appreciated. All I have is the Datafile, and assorted picts off of net.

I do note that Stec's E.V 002 with the bashed wing doesn't show tatters like the wing was fabric covered, just broken ply..

Thanx, FA

Howdy Will...........On pages 18-19 of the Datafile notice the top view, the "notch" in the wing outlines a good half of the cockpit opening. I think that a pilot getting in or out in a hurry could easily bump their head in that area, therefore the need for some padding.
Take a close look at the top and center picture on page 14, the padding is quite evident, you can even see wrinkles in the leather in the center picture.

I have ordered plans for a fokker E.V. and I fought my way through a Sig 1/4 scale cub with lots of glue and prayers and it flys great with a Magnum 1.8. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks a million.
