Picked up a Kmp Beaver and going gas. What gas engines are you guys running and is it enough power for flying off the water?
(I've seen a few posts suggest using a G-26, but the plane seems a bit heavy for that engine.) I got a G-45 looking for a mount. Any suggestions?

I have been flying it with a ZDZ 40 (still using a 20x8, break-in prop). 18 pounds on floats. Plenty of power. I fly it around at about 1/3 throttle.

When I take off from water, it gets up on step at about 1/3 throttle, then by the time I advance to 1/2-3/4, the plane is ready to break the surface.

I'm sure that you could get away with the G26 (others have clearly proven this, as you point out), but I went with a bigger engine, as I prefer to err on the side of over-powered.

I don't think that the G45 would be too much. Can't hurt to try!

You'll really like the plane. We just had our third float fly this past weekend. In spite of the weather that day (40 degrees, 15-20 mph winds), the plane performed great. Its handles the wind like a champ. Others that participated last weekend (with 60-sized planes) got dumped trying to taxi cross-wind, but there was never an issue with the Beaver.

Let us know what you decide and how it turns out.

Our club prez has a G-26 in his, and uses a 16-8 MA 3 blade prop, it flies fine with this combo, plus the engine sits completely within the cowl, except for the spark plug and the ends of the Pitts muffler. A G-45 would cetainly work , but a G-38 would be more than plenty.

Hello there, I flew mine today and it was a beauty, after few months without flying it.
Brisson 40, takes the plane with no problem, plenty power, not scale but I can tell you something I also feel like being on the overpower side of the equation is the best.
About the engine, all I can say is this:EXELLENT.

Have a nice day

Does anyone have and or flown a KMP Beaver with a G-26 in it? I would like an honest opinion on it's performance as far as if it's enough power or not enough. (I understand it's not a 3D plane and I plan to fly it scale, but I just want to make sure)

Akflyer posted the original video of the Beaver flying from water. He used a G26 with on-board ignition. He said the final weight was 23+ lbs, and he stated that it flew OK at that weight, but intended to lighten up in the future. It sure looked like it flew well, and the video supports that statement. See thread and video here: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_3405414/anchors_3405414/mpage_1/key_KMP%252Cbeaver%252Cvideo/anchor/tm.htm#3405414

Mine is just over 17 lbs with a ZDZ40. Way more power than required. I have a friend with a Decathelon (on floats) powered by G26. His planes weighs 21 lbs and gets out of the water in a hurry with that motor. I think that you'll have no problems using a G26 on this Beaver if you keep the weight under 20 lbs.

Anyone running an Evolution 26GT2? I have a couple of these engines flying at my field and they always seem to run great.
Any idea on what length standoffs would be needed? I plan to use the radial engine mount that horizon sells for the 26cc.

Hey there MORROMAX,
I too have got a KMP Beaver which I'm starting to put together...
Have you any tips on the assembly? Mine has big gaps between the fuse and the flaps and elevators, did you leave it or fix this by blocking up?
Any ideas would be of help, like re-glueing the formers or something you may have thought of since finishing it?
Cheers, Paul

Hey butlern..wondering how you got your Beaver at 17 lbs with a ZDX 40 in it. I had one with a G-26 and it was well over 20 lbs with the floats on. What kind of mods did you do to get the weight down

Hey there DrYankum...
Paul in New Zealand here, my I ask if you used the wheels first before the floats? and what servo have you used throughout?
I've got time now to assemble mine and would like any tips on doing it from you guys that have been there and successful flown.
Cheers, Paul

OK, you got me... I have to confess that I never actually weighed the plane, but I can tell you that the ZDZ40 (with muffler and ignition) is about a pound lighter than the G26 with muffler. I cannot believe that my Beaver is over 20 lbs. I have 20 pound planes, and the Beaver seems considerably lighter, which is why I estimated it to be around 17 lbs. I didn't do anything special, really. I replaced most of the hardware and used carbon fiber pushrods for the elevator halves, but that wouldn't account for the great difference in weight between your's and mine. Maybe it does weigh more than I think.

I'll get an actual measurement and post it ASAP.

DrYankum, why did you say that you "had" one... did you sell, or did it meet its demise out on the lake? I hope it's still flying, because these are really nice planes with great presence in water.

I'll be back soon to post the weight.

Noah
