Flyin Tiger, thanks for this thread and all the work you and your Boss put into it. I aquired the "Older?" version of the Extra from a club member last year and am now ready to duplicate your efforts. I do own a Revolution 52 from Brison N.I.B. that I planned to use unless Father's Day comes with a DA 50.hehe. My education falls a little short on the electric system fail-safes needed. I want to use Thunder Power lipos from my electric fleet so I need to research that a bit more. QUESTION: What is the difference between these planes?. Is there anything I can do to "modernize" my Extra?. I never attempt a flight with any ARF unless I take off portions of the covering and check structural joints etc. so I will be taking off a lot of this "Monocoat"?. at which time I'll give it the once over.

I would appreciate hearing your suggestions about my engine choice, etc. as this is my 1st aerobatic giant scale. I'm really jazzed to get it going..Thanks again. Mikel-T

Your Brison should work fine...break it in and prop it according to the directions and you'll have no problems. It should be plenty of power and you'll have a blast flying this great aircraft.

Electrical fail-safes:

1. Use TWO batteries and TWO switches into ONE receiver. That is all the electrical safety you need with the 28% planes.

2. Duralite makes a good fail-safe switch if you are interested in one more level of safety...if it were to fail it would stay in the "ON" position

3. A power expander isn't required in a 28% aircraft.

4. Don't worry about trying to use your Li-Po batteries on the receivers, you can use them with the help of regulators, but sometimes it is better to keep it simple and just use two batteries and two switches with no regulator. Li-Po's have a thin outer casing over the gel, not much protection in case of a crash, fire could result. Li-Ion batteries DO have a hard outer case, and are more suitable for larger aircraft.

ANSWER:

Differences between gen one and gen two Extras...

1. Fuselage shape, the new one has a wider, more scale-like fuselage, lighter weight, better laser cutting, some more bracing - look at the detailed pictures throughout the review, you'll see some differences.

2. Elevators are a larger percentage of the horizontal stab than the original, makes for tighter waterfalls/knife edge spins.

3. Landing gear fairings and smaller wheel pants give the plane a decidedly more scale look.

Those are the only ones that stand out to me right off. Have fun and ask as many questions as you want, but please read the review from the beginning first to soak up what is already here.
