Yo Dude: If not carefull, your bro and this old man will surly kick your tail this year if by chance you stop by on the way to Mom's place. This years "Thing" is honestly about 2 times the speed of the old little 35 powered bird. Scary fast, hope it stays alive for a while. See ya. ENJOY

Flyboy,
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, I was on to Zinger as i will need something more than an 11x6 to load this engine up. I was thinking an 12x10 3 blade (for the Ys 80 using tuned muffler and 20% coolpower) Do you think this will have adequate groung clearance on rotation ?

Max Throws,
A 12 inch prop will be OK, if you are flying off of blacktop. If you are flying off of grass, it would have to be a well maintained surface.

Really useful stuff here, thanks guys - especially Flyboy for the gear mixing tip, brilliant!

I'm just putting a Keecat together - some of the "engineering", or rather lack of it, is a bit disturbing but it is a lovely looking model.

Have we all now agreed that the CG as per instructions is just plain wrong?

I have been doing this for an on-line build elsewhere so have a whole bunch of pictures and hints & tips to share. When I get the time, I'll upload them here.

Thanks again.

The CG as shown on the back cover of the instruction book will result in a crash. The aft CG along with the need for down elevator will not allow you enough down elevator to hold the nose down when you reduce power to land. Even with full down stick. Follow what I said in a previous post for the CG and elevator settings. I've built two and both were exactly the same. Nice flying model and a lot of fun but they should correct the insrtructtion manuel. They would have a lot more successes and sales.
Regards

Thanks Flyboy.

No mention of control throws in the "instructions" - what would you use on ailerons & elevator as a starting point?

I'll measure mine and let you know. The ailerons are very responsive.

The throws that I'm using are as follows. Elevator, 22mm, up and down. Ailerons, 7mm up and down, measured at the wing tip. Rudder, 20 mm left and right, measured at the top of the rudder. I think a pilot figure really dresses this model up because of the large cockpit. See the picture.

Thanks again flyboy!

I'm going to tint my canopy using Tamiya "Smoke" ...

My instructions show the CG at 197mm (~7.7") and if I've understood right, it needs to be more like 8.5"-9.5"? Just want to be sure what others have printed on their instruction so we can "calibrate" this thinking - if they update the manual somebody reading this thread could have an equally un-controllable model.

I'm not certain what the policy here on RCU is - Mod's can you give me some guidance? What the rules for posting URL's? I've got a full on-line build/review with lots of pictures on RCMF.co.uk here in the UK but I don't want to tread on any toes.

Guys,

Which would you say is he better of the 2 aircraft, the Keecat or the Bobcat 50?

I'm following Wiz-UK's Build here in Blighty and look forward to seeing his in action later this year at one of the many fly-ins we jointly attend.

I'm interested in finding out which model is a better choice also.
I have been looking at both and I think the Bobcat may be slightly better and cheaper.
Waiting for opinions.

The keecat has much better build quality than the bobcat. I have built three of them and each one has been excellent. I just had my first flight on the third one yesterday and I think I have managed to solves the problem of it pitching up. I added 4(two on each side) of the included collars with one washer to add down thrust and I have been flying it without any down elevator trim since yesterday.

I will take some pics and put some video up later this week. I think the keecat is way better than the bobcat but that's just my opinion.

Bigger is not always better, It just means Heavier.
Yes it has retracts that people have been talking about having trouble with the front rotating one espesially.
I have a set of retracts already (non rotating). So $139 retract ready, as opposed to $199 for a heavier possibly slower plane ???
I guess by the replies that the Keecat is quit possibly a better constructed plane.
I like the Jet look and want something fast.
For me the Jury is still out.
Thanks for the input.

C Hardy.

Having seen both the bobcat and I am also building the Keecat the only major differences between the these model sis as follows.

Bobcat Keecat
Full fibreglass fuselage Built up fuse with fibregalss fairings (is almost twice as big)

No retracts but the newer ones do have Supplied mechanical retracts needing two servos
the mounts for air retracts.

One piece wing multi piece wing, bigger, but just a strong

A flying tailplane a flat slab tailplane and sligtly flimsy

I have converted mine to GDF and I should be testing it soon.

Marv.

Marvin, make sure you set the CG to at least 9.5" from trailing edge. This thing is not fun to fly with the CG even off slightly. I don't know how much down thrust you have added to yours but it will pitch up with speed if you don't have any down thrust. I have almost 1/2" worth of spacers added to mine for the down thrust and it is finally doing well. I still have to hold some elevator for inverted flight but it flies very well right side up. Good luck with yours.

Pubhi, your ideo looks inspiring. I have modified the tail to have a wing section and have fully sheeted it. The elevator is now smaller and I have fited a hi-torque servo too. Following your previous threads I can confirm the my CofG is forward of the original, it is just forward of the 9.5". I have set up my control throws as per you hints too and I am hoping to test it this weekend, I will keep you posted.

The test flight went well today, a little nose heavy but I felt it was the safer option than tail heavy. The 24oz fuel tank made it a little more nose heavy than I anticipated but the OS91 and Ramtec fan provided loads of thrust. I have provided a link to the UK JMA website where I have a build/conversion log. But to sum up 'Awesome and smooth'. No trim changes under power or off that I could detect with the nose heavy state and the keecat lands like a trainer.

http://jmajets.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=51

http://jmajets.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=58

Once I get the model adjusted I will get some decent flying shot to post here.
