I got the kit a couple of days ago but had to finish a few projects first. The first thing I did was all the lighting holes on the engine box, which saved 15 OZ !

If anyone has any questions on hole sizes etc. feel free to ask. Here's some pictures.

Does Dennis show all those lightning holes on the plans?
I'm looking over the 32% Yak I'm building and he just shows several round holes as before but all the build threads I've been seeing on 37% Yak and all the other 40% planes it looks like guys are really taking a lot of wood out of the motorbox now. I'm trying to decide how far I can go with this Yak. I'd like to really put it on diet as everyone does.
thanks
Steve

Hi Steve,

No dennis does not show those holes on the plans he shows four round holes on each side of the engine box and two on the landing gear plate. I have done this in the pass with excellent results, just make sure to make the corners of the "square holes" round instead of a perfect square. I also cut the landing gear plate 1" in front of the landing gear and replace that piece with balsa.

Thanks ALbert,
I'm going to talk to the guy I'm building it for and see how far he wants to take it. I don't see a reason why it can't be done on the 32% Yak also.

I 'll be using two 8611a's on the tail for the rudder so here's a picture of the servo mount on the back of the fuse sides.

Bottom deck is sheeted with 1/16" balsa, notice the balsa strip on the bottom deck sides. I glued on the these strips first then sheeted the the bottom deck to eliminate on seam.

Bottom deck installed. I decided to cut holes on the bottom deck even after saying i would never do it again, it only saved two ounces ! I've talked to guys that claim savings of 4 OZ and I'd love to see how because the whole bottom deck all sheeted and with no holes weights 6 OZ., after all it is almost four feet long.

Albert,

Does Dennis show the option of Rudder servos in the Tail and Pull/Pull ? Seems like several builders are opting for the Tail.

Great progress and thanks for sharing with us.

thanks, Ward

Hi Ward,

No he does not as this is really up to the builder. A few years back there seemed to be a contest to see how many servos we can put on a rudder tray, in fact I've seen a guy at a contest this summer with four 8611a's on a tray in a 40% extra. In the last year or so people are realizing that if the rudder servos are installed in the tail two 8611a are usually more than enough and a much simpler setup as well. With that said the tail must be kept light and this is why I'm going the extra mile to keep this fuse as light as possible.

Albert

Thanks Albert .....

I still want to build the Carden 30% Extra with you. I'll have Steve (ibow24) help me also, all I need is DA-75 to get me going.

I don't think the location of the servos makes the difference in their effectiveness, though of course it will make a difference in setup. My 40% 330 has two
