Hi, I have been using a Hi-Start and would like to move on to a winch. I don't know alot about them so any and all information would be helpfull. Do most people make their own or buy a ready to use produce?

I don't know how many people buy versus build their own from scratch, but you may want to take a look at this site. Tim McCann produces a very nice winch kit. Quality of workmanship is great, instructions, drawings and a list of everything needed to complete your winch along with various optional setups, and a listing of suppliers. To the best of my knowledge, there aren't many "ready-to-use" new winches "commercially" available currently. The demand is not sufficient to support it - and many of those vendors who have provided them in the past have discontinued production.

Many of us build our own, either from scratch or utilizing plans/kits available from sources such as the one mentioned by Merlin. A simple websearch will turn up several. And there seems to always be a market in used winches as well - so you might try posting for one here or in the "Wanted" forum.

I have built a number of winches using both 12-volt Ford longshaft and modified Chevy starters. I use dual ball bearings on the motors and v-belts or flat belts on the brakes. I also build the foot pedals and turnarounds. I like to try my winches out for a while myself and then sell them for a reasonable price.
