I just ordered mine and Im thinkin about using a ZDZ 40. It has a rear mounted carb and should put out enough power to make the mustang haul.

I am using a O.S 160 in mine. Great little plane. BUt later I plan to yank it for a gasser. Maybe a G-48 just to go with gas.

Hi Jerry,
18x10 prop. Standard rear muffler, firewall was cut and shifted back. exhaust is still slightly exposed at the bottom.

Evan,
Keep us posted as to the status of your new P-51 when you get it. I know that you are an excellent builder and I too, am considering the ZDZ 40 for my choice of power for this bird. I know the Saito 180 is a great choice as far as glow is concerned, but I want to go gas for this one. Know of several who have used the G-38 on theirs and they worked, but leave a lot to be desired in the power department. They are also a bit heavy for this bird and that is one reason many folks are having gear problems I believe. Anyway, it looks like that a gasser is going to weigh more than a glow so we might as well go for the most power to weight that we can get! By the way, got may "Ridge Runner" last week directly from Airborne Models and am in the planning stage now. I am going to use HiTech digitals for the servos--that much for sure.

Sam, I dont know if youve heard but I think zdz is coming out with a rear exhaust version of the 40. If this is true, it would be perfect for the mustang. The installation would be similar to what I have in my pica fw190d9 and rcs140. Ive been trying for several days to get someone at RCshowcase on the phone to order it, but no luck so far. I too plan to use hitec servos on mine as Im gettin tired of buying 7-9 futaba 9204s for each plane I build. I just havent been able to force myself to use anything less on my planes. Im thinkin on just using some 605mg s on it. I went ahead and ordered the miss america version as I plan to build a more scale p-51 later on and I just wanted this one to have something to fly that I dont have to worry so much about hangar rash.
Regards,
Evan Q.

Has anyone out there looked at using the Cheetah 41 with C&H ign on it? it has rear exhaust , and with the magneto/ flywheel shaved, would probably fit better in the front

I don't know, guys. Am not familiar with the Cheetah engines, so don't know about that one. I do know that the engine will have to be a fairly narrow one. Side carb models will probably be too wide to hide the carb in the cowl. Also, a potential problem may be cooling. It doesn't look like there is a lot of cowl opening area at the front for cooling purposes without undue butchering of the cowl. Do not want to do that! Anyway, will just have to test it and see. Also will need to open up some cooling air escape holes in places where I just don't want to do that. Man, what a pretty cowling job those folks did at WM! Guess we will answer those and other questions as we progress with assembly and tweak-tuning. I think Evan's on to something with the ZDZ though, as it has rear carb induction and maybe even rear exhaust making this an extremely linear engine and well suited for P-51 purposes. Other thoughts please!

Sam and others, I finally got thru to rcshowcase and was able to order a zdz40. Mike Dooley said that he wasnt sure but possibly some of the engines coming in next week would be of the rear exhaust variety. I went ahead and ordered one on the premise that if it was rear exhaust I would take it, if not, I would just settle on the side exhaust version. Either way, the carb is still concealed and I can build a header/muffler for either the side or rear exhaust version just like I did for my spitfire. Im not that concerned about the head poking out as this will facilitate cooling anyway. I have to agree that carbs poking out the side look cruddy. I also ordered a full set of hitec 605s from tower, not bad at 39 bucks compared to 120 smackers for a futaba 9204. I also plan to ditch the cruddy retracts and substitute something more durable. Ill keep you all posted of developments.

Hey Guys,
Been doing a lot of research on the P-51 engine situation as of late. The ZDZ 40 has been at the top of the list, but I have discovered the BME 44. After reviewing the stats of this engine, I believe that this
