Dear Gurus,
I am setting up my 68" EF Yak - finally! I am one generation of technology behind you F3a guys with an XTRA 30-10 and a Future 32.55K (not F3a version). From following the posts about the F3a version I am guessing that I want to have all the DIP switches in the off position (with no proportional braking I am assuming that I want the "air" setting on switch 1, not the land as you are doing with the F3a version). Should I expect any of the start-up problems you discuss with my "old" technology?
I have a second question which will sound quite naive but which I'll ask anyway. How do you power your receiver/servos? I was planning to use a separate receiver battery, regulator (Smart-Fly) and power-expander. Is this too much added weight for a model with an AUW of roughly 5kg? Should I just get a UBEC? (I am using 5 Hitec 5945 digital servos which as I understand can draw 450 ma each). I would love to know how you all approach this issue. Many thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike,

You are correct, you want all the switches off with the non proportional brake controller. As far as starting issues, with my Extra Evo I roll the throttle trim up very slowly until the motor starts and then throttle up normally and take off. Once in the air I roll the trim back down which takes me into the braking area of my throttle curve on the KA controller. With your normal controller you could do the same but you wont get as much drag at bottom stick.

As far as powering your radio I would go for a dedicated regulator (Central Hobbies do nice ones) and a 2 cell lipo pack. A 910 mAhr Thunderpower is more than adequate as with 5 digitals most people with 2m models are using around 45-55 mAhr per flight. I regularly put 9 flights on mine before recharging.

Good luck!

Malcolm

Mike,

I meant to say that the 45-55 mAhr/flight usage is with 2m electric F3A models. IC will use far more due to engine vibration causing the servos to have to exert torque to hold the surface in the correct position.

Dear Malcolm,
thank you for your kind reply. I have a Smart-Fly regulator and a 900ma 2s lipo which will work. Does anyone think a power-expander to further "clean up" the signals is worth it in a plane this size? There is only one multiple servo control (dual elevator servos). The Smart-Fly expander i had in mind weighs 70g (2.5 oz). I fly at a busy all-electric field which has a pretty dirty EMF environment. Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this subject. Cheers,

Mike

No experience of the Smart-Fly device I'm afraid.
