I have a P80 installed in the JL hawk as well. Just maiden it 2 days ago.

Plane weight is 9.5kg with empty tanks and full UAT. Need to trim some wood from the mount to get it to fit. Not a big job.

Did a taxi run and test of the turbine before the flight. Engine was a P80 that just came back from JetCatUsa. Was told its putting out 17lbs at 117k rpm. After checking with Jetcat I increased the P80 limit to 120k rpm which was the max for this dated engine.

Using the JL pipe that came with the plane. Found that the tail section was very hot after the ground taxi and testing of the engine. So will have to limit the test flight to a short taxi and get it in the air quickly to get the cooling.

Control throws was set the same as Eric Banner's Hawk. CG set at 125mm. Expo was set at -60% for both elevator and ailerons. With the fuel tank full, (was told it hold 2.75 liters), it felt nose heavy.

Take off run tracking was straight. I only have about 30 degrees either side for nose wheel steering so that helps. Take off without flaps. Had to pull quite a bit of elevator for it to get it airborne. Plane felt steady althought I had quite some trimming on my ailerons and elevator. Gears did not retract so did the flight gear down all the way.

Was on full power most of the time and the plane never did gain a really fast speed. Comfortable speed to fly at. Will have to check the engine thrust and see what kind of thrust its putting with the JL pipe. Did not feel like its giving its rated thrust. Or maybe the hawk is just one of those plane that just does not fly fast.

Kept the power up most of the time to get a feel of the plane. turns and straight line felt solid. The aileron response is abit too sensitive for my flying, will lower it by 20% the next flight. Did not try the slow flight handling much. Before I knew it, its was getting dark real quick (evening). Carried too much speed on the landing and bented the nose gear. Landing was also without flaps.

Next flight will insulate the pipe area to make the area run cooler. Don't want to burn out the only elevator servo. Also to try out the slow flight handling.

Did not get any flying pics, Guys were busy trying to get flights in the air between the rain and sunet.

Hi jwsp69

Congratulations on your maiden!

There is obviously a huge amount of drag created flying with the gear down. You will notice a vast difference in top speed when you get the retracts working.

Have fun,
Eric

Does anyone know if replacement parts are available? I need a left flap (for the new wing) and a bushing and pin for the steerable nosegear retract (the parts that attach the strut to the retract unit).

Thanks!!
Dom

I THINK the reason only one paint scheme is offered is because the full scale T-45 differs pretty substantially from the Hawk, and this is the only full scale paint scheme that there is for the T-45.[/quote]

What exactly are the difference between the 2 planes ? How to differentiate them ? Does than T-45 has the same GOOD AEROBATIC flying caracteristics as the Hawk ?

Success. I finally got to run my kit built MW54 today. Now I can put it in the T45 and get it in the air.

To answer you guys question, it is sport scale. The real T45 has squared off wing tips and the JL T45 has the rounded wing tips of the BAE Hawk. (Not sure why they did not incorporate this since it is definitely not a BAE Hawk with a T45 paint scheme like most of the others are) It does not look bad at all, it just is not scale. JL did incorporate a lot of the unique features of the T45 into this model and unless you are very familiar with these subtle differenes, you would not know that it is not scale. It does have the speed brakes on the sides of the fuse, ventral strake in the rear with the arresting hook, nose mounted petot tube and many other scale touches that make it look convincing and different enough from the BAE Hawk. Their landing gear is excellent and definitely looks "Navy" with beefy struts and the launch bar on the nose strut.

I can't comment on it's flight characterisitcs yet, but many others have flown them and posted excellent comments here on RCU about it's flight qualities like Eric Banner and Major Woody. Overall concensus seems to be that it is a very "honest" flying plane with the new wing and will perform basic aerobatics without any bad habits.

Hope that helps in your decision.

Woody

Have you a higher res picture of that one with you behind the model, or has anyone else a similar shot, I just want it to show the size of the model.

Don't do it. It really has to be kept at higher speeds to fly with the older wing - I haven't heard of anyone except the factory being successful with it. Best bet is to get the replacement wing.
