Here's my JL T45 in the middle of static judging at the Jet World Masters.

Done the first prototype 2787 as the first two test T45's 2787 & 2788 had round wing tips !

Hi guys,

I am am near the end of putting together my Jet Legend T45 and have a couple of questions for those of you who may have built them already. I installed the tailpipe and engine as per the Jet Legend instructions and lined the tailpipe to the centre of the turbine. When I looked at the plans the tailpipe is drawn in line with the wing incidence. My tailpipe seems to have a fair amount of down-thrust. Has anyone else come accross this during installation and is this normal?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Jase

Yes the engine bearers and the tailpipe are not in line, not much you can do with the tailpipe, you could mount it under the bearers but you would then nhave to mount the turbine the same way and it would not be easy.

Best bet is to tilt the turbine down by adding washers under the mountings, only really works with wide type mounting clamps like the new wren 54 version

Thanks for the reply,

I made two fine wedges out of ply to get the turbine to tilt at the same angle as the tailpipe. I am just unable to find out if this is acceptable or not for a jet. I have been trawling through other peoples pictures of the T45 to see if I could make out their tailpipe angles. I found a few that suggest they tilt down too but there aren't many pictures taken from the tail end of the plane.

I wonder if this has contributed to some people having difficulty taking off from grass. Some have tried bigger engines but if the pipe is causing downthrust a bigger engine would create more and place more weight on the nose, surely?

Has anyone noticed a distinct pitch change between flying at high and low throttle?

Hi Jase,

Don’t be concerned at the angle of the tailpipe. With the front of the turbine raised slightly so that pipe and turbine are in-line, all will be fine.

Rgds,
Eric

Hi Eric,

Thanks for the advice. I assume that you are flying yours with a similar pipe incidence from your pictures?

Jase

Xairflyer:

Noticed that you put the strut doors on the mains. How did you manage that? I ttired and the main wheel hit the bottom of the door when the oleo compressed. The only way I could see to do it would be to cut a half moon out of the bottom of the strut door to clear the tire which would of course leave a hole when the doors were closed. Could you post more pcitures of your main doors and how you set them up not to conflict with the main wheel when the strut is compressed? Many thanks in advance. Mine is ready to maiden but I left the main doors off for that reason.

Woody

Hi Jase,

Yes, I’m flying my T45 with the tailpipe/turbine set as in the pictures. I have approx 100 flights on her now. The pipe incidence effect (if any) is not a problem or even noticeable.

Rgds,
Eric

I'm thinking of getting this one for a big EDF conversion. Can anyone with it in kit form tell me the weights of the various components? Also, some dimensions of the inlets would be nice. My EDF system with battery weighs about 2kg, giving 5-6kg thrust, should be able to fly a 6-7kg model very well. BTW, is there much difference between its shape and a BAE Hawk? I'd probably want to repaint it as a BAE Hawk as there are a plethora of cool schemes around. Thanks, guys!
