Where did you get that fuel tank?
What is the capacity?

It's a water bottle ($1.50), capacity is 4L. Fit perfectly, didn't even need to anchor it. Don’t recall the brand, but I can go back to the store and take a look. I plan to fill to 3L and fly for 7-9 minutes. Still need to balance the jet though.

Can't say I really like the looks of that tank though - kind of looks like a still in the back seat...

If it survives the first flight, I was planning on doing one of two things. First would be to paint the back seat canopy area silver so you wouldn't be able to see the fuel tank. For the front half, I would make the cockpit and put a pilot in there. Second was to paint the entire canopy silver. We’ll see.

I'm using the stock tank, but I moved mine rearwards and up on the 'shelf' of the wing so it sits right against the intakes (closer to the C/G), kinda like Airforce7 has his.

Buy doing this I couldn't use the full closed-in tub of the rear seat, but I don't mind that.

You could also put an "IFR curtain" in the back seat.

I'm planning on using the stock tank but then adding the extra F-16 tank that Mike Lin sells to supplement the fuel capacity. My T-45 will have a pilot in the front only, but I'd like to keep some semblence of a cockpit in the back.

I made a few more modifications after my first ground runs and taxi testing. I found the fuselage area around the turbine (P-80) exhaust and pipe to be very hot. I added some flight metal on the inside and moved the turbine closer to the pipe by about a 1/2 inch. I opened the exhaust dimple on the hatch cover right over the turbine exhaust area.

I added a photo showing where I brought the airlines and the servo leads from the wing into the fuselage. There is still room to add a round 16 oz fuel tank for the smoke fluid in that area. Just about ready to fly this jet, couple more issues with the gear and doors to sort out.

Congrats Ken. Your '45 looks sweet too.

BTW, I would drool to have a place like that to fly in (judging by the background of your picture).

Congradulation on the maiden. 145mm on C.G. seems to be right on.

More pictures.

David,

I started with 5 minutes on the timer with 3L of fuel. I had about a liter left when I landed. Moved the timer up to 6 minutes and still had about a liter left. My last run time was 10 1/2 minutes. I can fill to a little over three liters and probably get about 8 minutes flight time with the P-80. I've only got 4 flights so far. The 100+ heat out here is a bit too much for the airframe along with the heat from the turbine, so I try to get the flights in early and keep them short.

As far as the CG goes, the mark in the blueprint is wrong. It's at least an inch back farther. I worked the CG location with my dad and there are additional factors he believes the designer did not factor in. If you do the CG per the plan it will come out nose heavy. It will fly, but you are risking a difficult landing by running out of elevator throw and a higher landing speed. My jet weighs 21.3 lbs dry. It fly's heavy; it's noticeable in the air. It also needs power through the turns much like my Rafale with a P-120. So, you can go back some on the CG by easily 10-20mm from 122mm.

The other thing that surprised me was it's really hard to see it in the air. There were a few times I could not see the wings, which could easily cause you to second guess your self going into a turn. It’s much worse than my Rafale with the blue/gray camo scheme. I'm going to look and making some adjustments in the coming weeks, possibly adding a smoke tank too. If any of you guys have questions let me know.

Ken
