When I got my elevator mechanism out of the fuselage I was missing one of the screws. I wasn't worried about it until I tried metric and standard screw sizes and they all didn't fit. I was stumped. So I took it in to work and had our machinist check the thread size and to our surprise it was 5-40, which is a rarely used screw for whatever reason. I had a hard time tracking it down and e-mailed McMasterCarr and they actually had it for sale. I tried to get like three for free, but they didn't go for it. I e-mailed GJC and they got me some extra ones. You can use an M3 screw, but you will have to drive it in knowing that you’re creating new threads over the existing ones.

Tommy, I will measure the holes for you and post them tonight or tomorrow.

That is an odd ball size, I dug around in our shop at work and found a box of 5-40 x 3/8 cap head screws

I just conformed that the clamp screws are indeed 5-40 x 3/8", also they are not Stainless steel but rather plated steel screws, the mounting screws are M3 x.5 x 12mm Long.

It figures that they would mix and match screws[X(]

Tommy,

Here are the dimensions for the hole locations. Expect the locations to vary with 1-2mm because of the tolerances in the mounting holes for the elevator mechanism and also within the mechanism itself. You need to hold the elevator up to see the screw heads through the holes.

Hi Tommy,

Let me know if you need more paint. I am getting some spare paint in and will look around and see if we've got some spare one for T45 Eagles

I can now report that the upgrade that I was working on for the elevator has corrected the in flight porpoising due to the loose mechanism, see photos of the upgrade for details

Just wondering if anyone else flying the T-45 is experiencing the same inflight hunting as Rich?

My T-45 elevator mechanism's VERY tight. Using very high end Futaba digital, though.

No hunting - flies like a pattern ship. Just watch the CG on an unmodified, second generation wing.

Need to fire that thing up again, but that darned composite Reaction's just been too seductive lately....

Where have you been seeing the slop coming from in the elevator mechanism?

That modification looks pretty smart - need to machine a couple dozen of those for the Hawk bretheren.

Chuck,
You must have a good one, all three T-45's in my area were very sloppy, I would say +/- 1/4" movement of the elevator, and believe me they hunt with that much slop.
After I installed the fix on mine it flew like it was on rails

Rich

p.s. if anyone wants a copy of my AutoCAD drawing for the two Aluminum posts that I made send me a PM

Tommy

How's it going? Malcolm Balfour is flying his JL Hawk here with the WrenSS and it flies just fine. BTW my SM Hawk weighed in at 27lbs wet at the JWM and it flew just fine with the SS also.

Hi Rich,

With your permission, I will machine some of these mechanisms and include them free of charge on our T45s for our club members.

I have your JPG file, but please email me your AUTOCAD file so I can go ahead making some of them.

I will try one set myself and see if it glides on rail.

Hi Rich, I would like a set also if possible. I will gladly pay you for them. I haven't finished my T-45 yet due to other projects so I don't know if I have slop or not but I think it's a good idea to have them just incase.

Hi Rich,

Cool, will email you my address.

Yes, have your attorney talk to my attorney and have their attorneys draft up a disclaimer. and then have them send you the bill. I will be happy to pay for the material of making them. Just kidding. It's flying at our own risks as always.
