Hi!
I am posting this for the benefit of all those (and mainly beginners with NO clue whatsoever about nitro trucks) who live in countries/places where it's impossible to get ready made fuel (Glow). I got myself a Traxxas Revo 3.3 last week (from the US). I live in India. Here are my experiences of fuel and first day fun!

1) Got Nitro Methane (CH3NO2) from a shop selling chemicals (for industrial and school/college laboratories). The bottle says Nitromethane 98%.
2) Got Methyl Alcohol (Methanol) from the same shop
3) Got Castor Oil from a grocery store

To brew 1 litre of Glow, I used 10% Nitro (cheaper + ample power for a beginner. works out to 100 ml in a one litre brew), 15% Castor Oil (150 ml) and 75% methanol (750 ml)
Shake em up in a mineral water bottle and we're set.
(If any rc pro would like to correct me with a better brew with the above mentioned ingredients, please do let me know if I'm going wrong somewhere)

Put it into my revo, started it easily and went through the running in procedure.... worked like a charm! It takes a lot of will power not to open the throttle full coz the revo begs to be pushed hard! (Thankfully no TDC / BDC problems which I was most worried about)

The only setting I had to change was lowering the idle speed. I did not fidget with the high speed / low speed settings. Maybe at a later stage I'll get down to that.

Few observations:

1) The truck makes helluva racket! So don't crank it up in places where people could crib (I had to shift location three times, till I was 200 metres away from humanity!!)

2) The engine gets more responsive as it gets hotter, it's pretty sluggish for the first couple of minutes and by the time the tank is about to finish, it's a rocket!

3) The exhaust stinks! ...probably the castor :-)

4) Do check the locking pins which hold the body into place and also the pins on the optidrive and servo's ...they tend to come loose and may fall off. I lost one pin (the one holding the servo in place)

5) A tank full of gas and you performing a running in procedure seems to take ages!! I was out for an hour and only managed going through 750 ml. (3 tank fulls)

6) If you live in an area where no one has ever seen an rc truck ...prepare for a crowd ...who also happen to ask dumb questions!

Looking forward to day 2, tomorrow.
Hopefully it goes off as well as today.

Regards

i ran 10% castor oil and it was ample protection, had to lean the hsn out over a full turn, and also, prolly a typo, but 15%=150mL

This is what my son is doing with his .28 Hyper. Compression raised to 12.4:1 (we'll be going higher soon), straight 20%castor and zero nitro. In a drag race from a standing start on the main straight there's no difference in performance compared to other identical buggies using nitro. It'd probably work just as well with less castor but he's more concerned about getting long life without experimenting. The engine worked very well on this fuel even before we modified it, it's just better now .

Hey Hpi Apollo,

Sorry 'bout the typo .... I did mean 150 ml! :-) ....... have edited my earlier post!

I shall probably try a lower castor percentage at a later date ...i'm an absolute newbie when it comes to r/c and don't want to get my fingers anywhere near adjustment screws! LOL

Regards
