I took a lot of photographs and am trying to make a panorama that can be used for a photofield sim airport. After stitching several together, when it came time to make the big one I keep getting a box that says I do not have enough RAM to render the image.

Do I have to buy new hardware? Or is there something I can toggle on/off in my computer?

You have to buy new hardware. You need Ram memory chips in your computer. I'd take it to a computer store to find out what kind before you buy any first

I guess a better question is what kind of computer you have? What program are you using to edit? How much RAM do you have now? If you cannot answer any of these then you might want to go to your local Best Buy and tell them what you have and see if they can help. We are all beginners with computers at one time or another, so don't feel bad if you can't answer these questions.

Okay, I am not to swift on computer stuff. I thought RAM was something that was adjustable. Maybe that is cache? If it is the chips, well my computer is a Dell desktop, a Dimension 4550 and it came with 256MB and I added an additional 256MB chip a long time ago for a total of 512MB. It is about 3 years old. I recently did a pano, using 173 photos that were 3264x2448 pixels and about 1.5Mb each. I was able to complete that pano, and now I am using pics that are 1280x960 and only 20 pictures, and it tells me I am out of RAM. I shut down everything I could think of, including firewalls.

I am using Photshop Elements, and the Photomerge command.

Thanks for the help!

Dell Dimension 4550
Intel (R)
Pentium (R) 4 CPU 2.40 Ghz
2.39 Ghz, 512MB of RAM

512 is bare minimum. I do a lot of video and digital photo work and just recently upped my memory to
4 Gb.
If nothing else you will notice a difference in speed with more memory. Meanwhile you could check and see how much free space you have on your HD. If its fairly full, dump some unused stuff from it. Then try increasing the pagefile. That could be enough to allow you to get the job done.

You never stated which operating system you are using. If you are using Windows XP you shouldn't have anything less than 2 GB in the machine. Otherwise, memory is swapped out to hard drive with the result being very slow operation and/or out of memory errors.

The easy way is to just purchase more memory from Dell.

That machine is at the end of its' useful life. I would start saving for a new one. In addition, I had a Dell 4500 were the system board burned out. I personally will never buy a Dell again. After all the machine failures at work and mine failing at home, I am done with them. They have let quality slip for profits.

I used the same machine, same 512MB, about a month ago to make this:

quote:

I recently did a pano, using 173 photos that were 3264x2448 pixels and about 1.5Mb each. I was able to complete that pano,

My final result was a pano that is 10MB in size.

Today, the best I can get is an 879Kb pano after downsizing the 1280 sized images to 50% in the Photomerge. Nothing else has changed between the two events. As for free space, I have 7GB available on my 40 GB C drive and 110GB available on my 120GB F drive.

Something weird is going on and unfortunately I do not have the training to figure it out.

Thanks for all the help. However, this thread might as well be closed.

You should be able to do picture and video editing with only 512, but it will be slower. I would recomend checking your comp for viruses and other nasty infections.
At work (I do tech support), we have a couple Dells (350+) and several Dimension 4550's. I believe those have 184 pin DDR ram. You should be able to get another 512MB for like $50.

As far as 2 GB? come on. I run 1 GB (1024MB=1GB) on my home computer. I would recomend at a BARE minimum 256, if at all possible 512MB, but the sweet spot is 1 GB. Any more and unless your doing very demanding things, sorry medium duty photoediting doesn't count, should work perfectly fine.
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=586829&CatId=147 should be what your looking for. its as easy as snaping it in. No configurations.

I meant to add that I'm talking about Windows XP (Pro or Home) if you have another OS, let me know

LOL, well speaking from experience, I won't even build an XP machine for anyone with less than 1Gb. As for 256mb.....

Using ELEMENTS is almost the same thing as using PHOTOSHOP

Here is a little trick I have used.

!st off --- RAM simply mease RANDOM ACESS MEMORY

If you have a lot of other applications open at the same time you are trying to work with -- you are simply asking for difficulties!

1) Try to have ONLY -- ELEMENTS open while working your project.

2) KNOW what the FINAL dimensions are of your finished project.

3) Open whatever file you want in your final image,

4) Go to the column that will allow you to open your LAYERS popup

5) DRAG the small IKON from the LAYERS directly into your panarama -- this image will now be duplicated
*NOTE* Be sure that ALL images have similar characteristics --- i.e. same dpi - same jpg, tif, whatever - same RGB or CMYK

6) Open your 2nd image - drag that beside the 1st image in the panarama

OVERLAP by as much as 30% - this will help to adust for for distortion

If you are finished with image ONE --- close the file -- this will open up some RAM

SAVE --- SAVE -- SAVE! NEED I SAY MORE?!

If you are still getting that popup telling you that you are out of memory -- look for a drop down that will allow you to PURGE!

Once you Purge, all of your stuff in active RAM will be gone -- not to say that you can't get it again --- but you will
really loosen up all kinds of available RAM so that you can carry on with your work.

If that doesn't work, then LOWER your working dpi

To print out a good quality print, you really don't need to be doing anything more than 300 DPI --- RGB

Good LUCK -- I'm almost sure that will help your problem

If I'm not mistaken, that's all the memory I have in my system
