I bought a bonzer 6518 Off road RC Truck.  It runs fine on smooth surfaces and runs ok on rough surfaces in reverse.  But going forward in the grass or on a marginally bumpy surface, the RC Truck just bucks.  If I give it a push, then the truck will go forward on its own.  But it's really disappointing.  The whole point of buying an off road truck was to drive it off road.  Is there anything I can do to increase the torque in forward?

If you are suing the standard battery and charger supplied with the kit that is more than likely your problem. If you have any mates with decent delta peak cut off chargers get them to charge your battery or borrow one of their batteries and try it. Failing that check your motor has not got anything stuck in it if all that fails it has to be the esc unless you have stripped some gears but that seems unlikely as stripped gears would cause problems in forward and reverse.

hey 2.4ghz thats cool

well sounds like u have the skills for of it, hey next time u have it appart the carbon gear shafts are cheap...
good work with that shaft so many peeople have problems with it & get stuck

The 2.4 ghz is indeed cool and works well Buuuut, since the chassis rebuild we havea recurring problem - the main gear - the one that drives off the motor gear (spur gear?) strips. My son has just stripped the third one. I love tinkering with the thing but buying an entire gear set just for the one gear is getting expensive. It also doesnt last more than about 2 - 3 hours of total driving before failing. Last time it let go slowly with a lot of noise and the car still drove and initially only slipped when starting from stationary.

Any advice on how to prevent this hapening?

I suspect the clutchless design is to blame - too much torque thru the plastic gears with those grippy tyres and 4wd eventually breaks the gear OR perhaos the Tlo01 chassis and HBX gear set are not a perfect match - i.e the chassis places the spur and first gear just too far apart (it looks fine to the naked eye) resulting in tooth wear and eventual slippage?

Or is this normal and these things are high maintenance?

Please help...

Just to doubble check, are u using the inspection hole to check the gear allighnment? And next time check that the gear shaft is nice and snug in the chassis. Sometimes the locating hole in the chassis gets elongated, since its been happening a bit, I would recommend getting the Tamiya chassis and shafts... Should only be about $10

Thanks, I stripped the chassis down on the weekend and found it wasnt the gear I thought it was. One of the side shaft gears lost a tooth and that damaged the second part( no idea how else to decribe it) of the first gear drive. I replaced all worn looking gears and cleaned up the teeth of the damaged gear and re-assembled it all. It works fine again.

Your point about gear alignment is good - after the first failure I did tighten the motor screws far tighter which is probably why the first gear did not strip again. I am using the Tamiya chassis but with HBX gears so some of the problems could be there...

As long as my son is able to have fun with the car I am happy

Hello Guys!

I want to make a winter car from a Bonzer. Wheels would be stock size, ~120mm diameter. I want to use 2S LiPo, only question is a the motor. Anyone tried ~2200kv motor with 19 pinion?

Thanks for your reply

2200kv is fine, but is really the maximum KV to use.. personally I would go with a lower KV, especially for winter use...

Hi,

This is actually my first post on this thread, I just saw it. I've had my Bonzer Tiger Cross for 5yrs now. I'm just getting it back up and running again. I have the same problem as you. I just replaced all the gears in the transmissions with TL-01 gears and they fit perfectly. But now when I move it back and forth, it seems as if the gears turn harder than before. Do they just need to be broken in? I'm waiting of a pinion gear from NH, and then I'll have it working. I haven't run the thing in 3-4yrs. I guess I've been consentrating too much on my Duratrax Evader ST.

im 99% sure its because the stock battery sucks and its not supplying enough current to the motor, then the motor struggles to work out what direction its running in then takesoff.

i bet
its worse when the battery is flat?
only does it when taking of fast from a stand still?

how to fix.
lower gearing but loose top speed
or
Get a lipo and lipo charger (it will make ur truck heaps more powerfull)

Hi,

Thanks for your reply!

Well i did charge the battery (3hours atleast) i also have a 5000mah Li-Po which i didnt get a chance to test as i said this is out-of-the-box issue.

Even if i apply little throttle and i hear gears slipping or maybe its axle, i just hear a GRRRR sound, when i lift the car up and give throttle then there is no noise. The noise is both ways, i.e Forward or Reverse, but only when moving from a stationairy position, after some acceleration the noise goes away.

TIA!

Regards,
Mani

Hi,

Ok i tested with the Li-Po as well, i still get the grrrr sound during the initial start from stationary position, now either something needs to be tightened (which i have no clue about) or a gear is damaged or something, if anyone here has some experience on it here do let me know as it will be a long drive (2hours one way) for me to take it back from where i bought it from.

TIA!

Open up the transmissions. You just have to remove the suspension arms and shocks, the servo, the bumpers, the motor, and the esc/receiver. You should be able to crack the chassis lengthwise, but do it slowly, or all the gears will spring all over. Then order this. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tamiya-TL-01-G-Parts-Tree-Gears-TL01-TAM50738-/350688648764?pt=US_Character_Radio_Control_Toys&hash=item51a6ac1e3c and this http://www.ebay.com/itm/Robinson-Racing-48P-Metric-Pinion-19T-Tamiya-CR-01-RRP1119-ships-from-USA-/200876518424?pt=US_Character_Radio_Control_Diecast_Toys&hash=item2ec52c6c18. I just ordered these things. and now I'm waiting on the pinion. The gears installed nicely. I'm going to run lipo, but I can't see how it acts until my pinion shows up on Thursday. I ahd the same problem.

ahh but he is running the HBX Massive Bath tub chassis

oh hummm well but the info u have provided its looking like a mechanical problem.

Just to start with pop of the gear cover and inspect the gears, is the gear mesh set correctly?

if thats all sweet, its going to involve more investergating.

is it under warrenty?

Order a new set of pins and nuts. The sizes should be in the manual.

 Hi,

Ok i installed the new pin n nut, but again the F/L came out, only this time we were able to notice in time and didnt loose the parts.

P.s. it only happens if i increase the EPA more then 40%. At what lvl do you guys run your cars?

I'm sorry, but I just don't quite understand your question. Maybe if you reword it a little differently. What is the EPA?

Please don't use abbreviations as it is easier to read when you write it out. (You can abbreviate to standard stuff like ESC, or RX/TX or whatever.) I'm really sorry I can't quite figure out your question.

What I think so far, is that after you put the wheel and nut back on, start running the car, the wheel falls off. If that's the case, then your axle may be stripped from overtightening it. If this is not the problem, please reword it.

Ok, I found out what EPA means. (End Point Adjustment)  Ok...So the wheel falls off at like 40% throttle then. Is the nut slipping through the hole in the wheel? How is it falling off?

Hi,

My appologies there, even i didnt know the meaning of EPA !

Ok the problem is that the so called 'lock nuts' are not locking properly, i am not overtightening them, after every 5-10 mins of run (off road)  they become a little loose, i have to keep making 'pit stops' to adjust them back, and specially the Front-left wheel, it has come out twice alread. And as for throttle yes you are right i have to hold it back (Via the EPA adjustment notch from the controller) if i increase it around 30-40%  the Front-left wheel comes out, and the fun stops !

TIA!

Regards,
Mani
