Painting Carbon Fiber is really, really, really hard I'm guessing.

Go to: www.xxxmain.com/stickerz-carbon.shtml They have blank Carbon Fiber sticker sheets so you can use those. Hope this helps.

dude your taking one hell of an Ambitious project. that is making super skinny tape with that weave of carbon fiber. this like week long painting job. unless you really good at painting and masking and you have a huge patience go for it!

in the past I have used the mesh that is used to line bottom of cabinets and drawers... stole some from the wifes supplies...hehe. worked pretty good but you have to make sure it does not strech or move. painted black over it and then took it off and painted gray.

I got it from here:
http://www.rctech.net/articles/painting_hauntedmyst3.shtml

it is about 3/4ths of the way down the page...

Its actually very, very, very easy. Get a roll of non skid pad like what they use in kitchens and in toolboxes. Its a rubbery mat with lots of square holes. Cut a piece only as big as you need it. Place it on the part you are painting and use a hair dryer to make the piece lay flat on what you need it. Im not sure what paint you use but I use fascolor. I mix about 3 drops of black with about 10 of silver and spray lightly. Just enough to get good coverage but not to let it run. Move the body around so that you can get all the way around but make sure the mat does not move. Then take the mat off and hit it with black. It kinda looks like this.

Clean the body really well. take drywall tape and put it over the area you want to look like carbon fiber then spray gray, peel the tape off and spray black. if you want a little more realistic look then instead of gray then hit it with back very lightly. go over the black with root beer then back with silver, peel the tape and finish with black. (Note: You will not get it right the first time so practice on some scrap lexan and be light with the root beer it will beed through other colors if laid down to heavy)

Thank you for all the replies. I was able to make an acceptable first job using your advices ( will have pics once the body is cut and fitted ).

And I will definitely try the drywall tape method.

dont use the drywall tape it doesnt look like cf. have a go with it to make a different effect, but if you want cf effect, use the toolbox liner. its the only way to go

There were a couple a suggestions as to how to get the CF effect, but i don't think you told us which method you used to get the CF effect!!

The body looks pretty decent, i think its a good first attempt.......

I first painted a light coat of transparent black. The most difficult part was to try to make it EVEN, and not too dark. Then I used the kitchen drawer anti-skid material as a template, and painted a few light coats of white ( LIGHT coats, until it becomes solid white through the template). And last, I removed the template and painted solid black on top of everything.

My girlfriend suggested to use the transparent black method instead of skipping this step and using grey or silver paint. She actually was able to make an awesone looking carbon fiber paint job (on my practice acetate sheets), but I wasn't able to make it quite as good looking on the body as she could on the practice sheets.

the shelf liner works real good as long as its something flat. if anyone has any suggestions on how to get it to lay in hood scoops like the mustang gtr body let me know, i also use faskolor faspearl black and regular gloss black for carbon fiber and it comes closer than anything else ive used

Hey bud.
Not bad for the first attempt.

Color application is the trickest. Always lay the light color on first, pull your shelf liner up, then shoot the darker color.
I use faspearl silver with a few drops of black and copper in it, and faspearl charcoal as the darker color.

Tune into CFX Paintworks if you have ANY questions about RC painting. I've Learned from the best!

saran wrap.
Spray your candy color on first (translucent), mine was purple. Let that dry, then the second coat was faspearl silver, and while that was still wet put the saran wrap down, let it dry. (that takes a while) Then I backed it with faspearl black. Pretty simple, and looks sweet. Use different color combos to get some sweet effects. I'm going to try some neons next time around.

Painting Carbon Fiber is probably the easiest thing to do when painting a body. Here is a step by step instructional. You will need shelf liner available at your local supermarket, Fasblack and Faspearl Charcoal.

1. Lay the liner over the body making sure it is tightly pressed to the body. This is easy on flat parts but gets a little tricky on curved parts. Make sure it is lined up with the edges so it looks straight.

2. Spray Fasblack over the liner EVENLY making sure the liner does not move. Usually you apply thin even coats but this is one time where I would make an exception and try to cover completely in one coat. Once you remove the liner you do not want to have to try to line it up again to apply a second coat.

3. After the Fasblack has dried you can spray the Faspearl Charcoal completely covering the rest of the unpainted area. Apply two or three even coats or until completely covered.

I have found that these colors give the best Carbon fiber effect.

Good luck and have fun painting.

nice... what method did you use to do the whole body. the ways I have done it only seem to work for doing small flat sections.

To do a good looking carbon effect go to your local hardware store and get drywall tape. Get one with the lowest tack possible because you dont want it to be sticking to the body (and leaving glue) when you remove it.

If you buy one and it has a high tack (high glue) then try rubbing it off on something before applying it. Maybe rub it on wax paper...wet it with and scrub with a towel..etc

You want it to stick but not leave a residue when you done with it. Also when you apply it take it off in less than an hour after applying the tape. The less time on the body the less time the glue has to settle.
