SIG Astro Hog
I have recently embarked on a KIT building project. It happens to be a Astro Hog from the 80's. This would be my first 60size kit, so bear with my cock-ups. I hope to get some tips from those who had already been there done that with this HOG.
I had made reference to this existing thread, [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_3462912/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm]LINK[/link] but could not find much built pics. So feel free to hog this thread with your built pics if you like. I am sure it will help all the hoggers, especially me.

RE: SIG Astro Hog
I started on the left wing based on the plans and have completed almost 80% of it. One of my friend is gonna get me the instruction booklet that was supposed to be accompanied in the Kit. Till then I am only relying on the plan and my shallow knowledge on interpreting them.

RE: SIG Astro Hog
The left bow was completed today. There was a bit of a hiccup when I couldn't get the top front and rear 1/4" balsa stiffeners to bend down towards the bow. So I cut it into half and joint them.

RE: SIG Astro Hog
Just received the manual from my friend....and I found out my first mess. I have cut away the rib guide tabs off all the ribs!! [:@]
All well, just need to improvise for the right wing. []

RE: SIG Astro Hog
I have built two of these kits and there is one thing I recomend to do with the fuse. As it is in the kit you have to cut the fuse side doublers at each former location which weakens the fusealage considerably as I've heard of some builders breaking the fuse on a hard landing. My fix is to cut new doublers out of lite ply and cut all the formers that are in contact with the doublers 1/8" narrower on each side. This results in no weight increase with much more strengh in the overall fuse stucthure I have seen this plane make many a disastrous landing[crash?] with no tendency to break up as I have heard others proclaim. This is a very great flying airplane as the one we ended up with is now serveral years old now and is still the best flying bird in my fleet.

[8D]Must have been one heck of a hard landing. I have built
three Hogs and have never experienced any weaknesses in
the structure of the aircraft.

RE: SIG Astro Hog
Okay....worked on the right wing today- almost done for the glueing. Just wanted to see the halves together, so I put them side-by-side.
Oh by the way, its gonna have 0º dihedral.

RE: SIG Astro Hog
0º dihedral is probably OK.
Hopefully someone that has done this mod will chime in.
Mine has less than the plan calls for but you can still easily see that it has dihedral.
Mine is a tail dragger and I highly recommend going that route. I have the landing gear mounted on the fuselage in front of the wing and I have been very happy with that mod.
An OS 91 Surpass powers the beast and it feels right to me.
My brother had one with a 70 4-stroke and it flew very well with that engine too.
The 91 gives it more vertical power but the 70 was fun too, plenty of power to pull through big loops.
Hopefully someone that has done this mod will chime in.

Vertical power is good to hear....can't wait to see my hog do that..

Hmm.. maybe when I arrive at this stage, I will look into what you have mentioned. A little reinforcement would do more good I suppose. Thanks!

RE: SIG Astro Hog
Next would be sanding and planking the wing halves.... or maybe I should continue with the fuse construction then plank them later together.

RE: SIG Astro Hog
The first one was destroyed with radio failure out of a spin recovery and dove straight in with total destuction including the engine. That was with an OS 90 four stroke and it now has an OS 70 on it and flies great.

RE: SIG Astro Hog
I too am building the astro hog and having a great time with it. I dropped the dihedral to 3 degrees and I also made a second dihedral brace from scrap lite plywood and attached this behind the main spar connection. The main brace is attched to the front of the spar per directions. I made this mod after reading and had planked the wings already. I would do this before planking if I build another. I am putting a 12 az. fuel tank in and will not attach it to the firewll as in my instructions. I am going to have to add a a piece of lite ply for a shelf for the tank to sit on, any suggestions?

I would and planning to try the DX7 Specktrum, if it gets released in time. Don't want to lose all the hardwork on someones else's mistake.

RE: SIG Astro Hog
taildragger. I also added some of the scrap lite ply on the other sides of the ribs for the landing gear blocks for some added strength as this is only my second plane and my first was a trike. still contemplating whether to use monokote or fabric and dope. I am enjoying the building process but I am sure it will br easier to make repairs to mono.

mechplas,
Thanks for doing this. I've been wanting to start my kit and just haven't. This will help me along and answer some questions. Looking forward to your thread.

I did not do much yesterday. I was dead beat so all that was done was the cutting of the fuse and trial fitting. I need to go shopping for an engine and engine mount to continue as per manual.... (lame excuse to stall the project and take a break?...hmmm)
