[:D] NORCAL

a biy of down thrust is in order

a thoroughly delightful plane

chevy43 -> RE: Postal Plane Project (2/3/2008 5:05 AM)

I put the rudder on channel 4 accidently and had to fly my whole flight with the roll on the left stick and no response from roll on the right stick. I recomend putting the rudder on channel 1[8|] I fixed that on flight two.. 1/2 a tank is plenty.... Don't fill it the first time!

ProBroJoe -> RE: Postal Plane Project (2/4/2008 2:38 AM)

Very cool. Looks like you guys had a good time!

chevy43 -> RE: Postal Plane Project (2/6/2008 8:59 AM)

Jerusha is next on the list. I will try to PM him and see if he wants Grace next...

Glad you guys had a good flight. How many seconds was it before you had that "Oh, Darn!" realization? Did the rain hold off long enough or were you fighting weather too?

You bring up a good point about putting the controlls on the left stick. I dont think I put that anywhere with the model.

I know we have tried contacting Jerusha before... If you cant get a hold of him promptly let me know and we may have to come back to him.

chevy43 -> RE: Postal Plane Project (2/10/2008 2:33 AM)

Well I didn't get a hold of Jerusha so shall we move to the next person?

dieFluggeister -> RE: Postal Plane Project (2/10/2008 3:49 AM)

I guess so.

Jerusha, please PM me when you read this post.

Hogflyer, looks like you're up!

chevy43 -> RE: Postal Plane Project (2/17/2008 2:59 AM)

Hogflyer said the weather was bad out his way and we could keep the plane another week.

Two new people flew her today. And I flew her a bunch and Rocketrob flew a little too.

I added a little down thrust with a couple of washer under the upper mounts which helped some but seems like it could use more.

We met Richard Tacklind who lives near by and was very intrested in the Postal Plane Project. He writes for Quiet Flyer Magazine ( which now has a new name I can't recall ). I asked him if he wanted to fly her too.. He enjoyed a flight but she dead sticked and he put her down gently. He said he might like to write an artical on Grace...

Well now she will be off to Hogflyer.....

RocketRob -> RE: Postal Plane Project (2/17/2008 6:03 AM)

We ran radar and timed Grace through the trap at 53.5mph - I believe it was Tim's time.

Chevy do you recall your speed?

misfitsailor -> RE: Postal Plane Project (2/17/2008 6:07 AM)

Although my application to get on the list to fly Grace was passed over [:)], I am thrilled to have piloted the postal plane today! A very enjoyable experience. This plane is well-designed, nicely constructed and beautifully covered.

Special thanks to chevy43 for holding on to Grace for a little longer!

Tim

PS I want one of these planes! I picture it as a taildragger...

dieFluggeister -> RE: Postal Plane Project (2/18/2008 4:52 PM)

Misfitsailor, Oh man am I sorry if you got skipped or if I did not respond to your request. I'm very sorry. I'm not very good at website management. PM me and tell me when you first contacted me and I will try and make it right.

On the same note, if anyone else has not gotten on the roster as requested PLEASE let me know, send me another email, telegraph, phone call...whatever. I want everyone, everywhere, of all skill levels to have a go at it.

On a separate issue, I think Grace could use a permanent motor mount instead of the standoffs used originally. I have noticed on my own bird that it is not real accurate for a consistant thrust line and prone to vibration and I have switched to two harwood blocks on either side of the choke tube. Could someone design a solid block mount to the firewall that would make things easier? Also, a couple of degrees of downthrust might be in order as well.

vicman -> RE: Postal Plane Project (2/18/2008 6:19 PM)

53 mph would have killed Patrick's trophy bid at the first reedie race.![X(]

RocketRob -> RE: Postal Plane Project (2/18/2008 10:36 PM)

Vicman - that would be 53.5mph, sir!

In all honesty, Tim was the only one willing to dive and turn downwind for the man with the radar gun[;)]

Treven, just could not bring himself to succumb to the peer presure - kept muttering something about not wanting to be the one to rip the wings off...........

misfitsailor -> RE: Postal Plane Project (2/19/2008 2:28 AM)

dieFluggeister, don't sweat the small stuff! I should have just kept asking.

[:D] You know what they say about the squeaky wheel...

ptulmer -> RE: Postal Plane Project (2/19/2008 3:50 AM)

Vic, the current DNU was clocked at over 80mph with a Big Mig .061. But 53 (.5) with a Surestart is mind numbing. Just freakin' outstanding!

dieFluggeister -> RE: Postal Plane Project (2/22/2008 1:33 AM)

Goes pretty fast for a fat chick.[:)]

What kind of motor did you put on that thing ProBro?

Bone stock SureStart... I thought about warming it over, but I reread the PPP's instructions and there was a line in there about not modifying the plane in any way.... So, I guess I wimped out. [;)]

Sounds like she's running pretty good now - you guys gotta get us some West Coast video!

hogflyer -> RE: Postal Plane Project (2/29/2008 12:21 AM)

GRACE arrived today [sm=teeth_smile.gif][sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif]

This is one nicely built plane and covered plane, and everything is well packed and secured.

It took me all of 10 minutes to assemble her, break out a brand new virgin Berg Microstamp 4L and program my 7C. I set low rates to the throws given on the box, and added a little bit more for high rates. The elevator servo is bad. It jitters when I go to move it, and jitters when I bring it back to center. I'm trying to get a hold of a buddy to borrow one of his since all my HS-55's are loaned out and it'll be several weeks at the earliest before I can get them back.

Since the receiver can be programmed in fail safe, should I activate that feature? If so, full left rudder/up elevator or ???? I'll leave that up to DF or the powers that be for that call.

If I can get a servo I hope to test fly it tomorrow after work since the temps will be in the low 60's and winds 8 - 12 mph. It should fly nice in those winds. How much wind has GRACE been flown in? I could test it Sat in 32+ mph winds we have forecast [:D] I'm trying to get a hold of somebody who can shoot video of it, so hopefully next week I'll get some pictures/video posted.

Also just to verify - the receiver battery is a 250mAn NiCad (I didn't want to pull it out to look at it)? I don't want to over do the charge rate to charge on the wrong battery type.

ProBroJoe -> RE: Postal Plane Project (2/29/2008 2:56 AM)

We lost another elevator servo? Sounds almost like the same symptoms too...

quote:

ProBroJoe:
The not so good news...

We somehow lost a elevator servo. While I was adjusting the pushrods and setting the trims, I noticed that when I pressed on the output shaft of the elevator servo it would go into serious jitters (back and forth to each extreme). Not wanting to take a chance, I swapped it out for a brand new HS-55 (fresh out of the box). No biggie, stuff happens...

I put a brand new servo in place just before Christmas - I wonder if something is happening in shipping? I noticed the elevator control rod sticks out past the fuse a bit - maybe it's getting banged around in transit and taking out the servo's potentiometer? Perhaps part of the shipping S.O.P. can be to disconnect the elevator pushrod at the elevator and then retract the pushrod so it doesn't stick past the fuse? It's just a thought - but it does seem a little more than a coincidence...

I can't speak for the rest, but I usually don't mess with a failsafe - I'd rather the receiver "take a hit" and get over it, then go into failsafe at a real inopportune time.

I flew Grace in 10-15 MPH winds and was happy to get 'er down and put 'er away. If it were my plane, I may have felt differently, but I didn't want to be the first to dork Grace in!

Oh, the RX pack is a 270 mAh NiCAD, and it was cycling a bit over that, more like 280-290... but of course the standard disclaimer applies, you results may very, etc... [;)]

Looking forward to the flight report / video!

-Joe

dieFluggeister -> RE: Postal Plane Project (2/29/2008 3:56 AM)

Full rudder and up elevator and it will snap! Low rates give generous control so dont think you need to increase them unless you want to do aerobatics.

Disconnecting the clevises from the servo arms might be a very good idea for shipping. Maybe you could mark the holes in the control arms to help the next guy setup?

It handles wind very well and better than most of my other planes. 32mph might be a little stiff but dont be afraid to throw it into a nice headwind. Oh and for your first flight, just put about a half ounce in the tank... right guys?[;)]

hogflyer -> RE: Postal Plane Project (2/29/2008 2:19 PM)

I was able to borrow a servo last night and that fixed the elevator. When I ship it, I'll make sure the elevator servo horn is not attached to the servo and pulled into the fuselage as far as possible add this to the instructions in the box. I'll also put a mark on the fuselage side by the servo horn to indicate where neutral is to make set-up easier. I'm wondering if the HS-55 is just not strong enough for the elevator? While it may move, could it be under a heavy flight load which is is causing it to crap out? I'm going to see if the LHS has any HS-55's to replace it if I can get by there next week.

Using my Berg 4L it balanced perfectly level at the 1-1/2" point, which will be a good starting point. I'll also leave the fail safe turned off.

DF - I set the throws on low rates to what is listed on the box, but I wanted to increase the rudder to see if I can get it close to axial rolls like my Q-Tee used to do. There's a couple of guys that I want to eat crow when they say 2-ch can't perform decent aerobatics, and form the looks of it, I think the airframe is more than capable of taking the rudder aerobatics.

Its sitting out in my truck and I hope to fly it today after work (after stuffing .60 sized planes in there, it sure is nice to be able to put a small plane in that sits on the front seat that I don't have to fight with for room to sit). I'm not sure if the camara man will make it or not, so this will not be the only day that I'll have it out flying. I'm going to take it to the club meeting for show-n-tell next Friday just to show the IMAC crowd there is more than DA-150's and Carden Extras out there [:D].

dieFluggeister -> RE: Postal Plane Project (2/29/2008 5:44 PM)

The hs-55 is strong enough for flight but the nylon gear train just might not be up to all the abuse of assembly and shipping. A 65 would be better and I'll be ordering stuff this weekend.

The airframe is plenty strong enough for aeorbatics. Back on page#8 I was testing spins. Make it snap and then give full rudder and down elevator and it should spin for you. It wont spin on low rates though so you will have to dial it up a little...
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_4978699/mpage_8/key_/tm.htm#

Axial rolls are not a strong point but with a little practice (and speed) it does ok. I dont know if 'high rates' have been posted on the box yet but I think I was using about 3/4" Rudder and 1/2" Elevator each way. Expo is a must though and I was using about -30%.

vicman -> RE: Postal Plane Project (2/29/2008 5:49 PM)

I never liked HS-55s myself.
You will have a hoot showing the IMAC guys how it's done.

1/2 oz is a must for the first flight!

I didn't want to be the first to dork Grace in!

Didn't you notice a little extra ca around the firewall? [8D]

chevy43 -> RE: Postal Plane Project (3/1/2008 1:42 AM)

I'm glad you got it! It had the jitter on the elevator sevo the whole time we had it. We checked that it would go up and down with some finger pressure on it and it did. We just ignored the jitter in the middle and had no problems.......

It did really nice aerobatics for us and 15 mph of smooth wind was no problem....

1/2 tank is a good idea for the first flight!!

Have fun!!

What's going on? That's the same symptoms I had, and swapping out the servo fixed it. I'm 99.9% sure it was working fine when I packed it away.... Something has to be happening in shipping. [8|]
