I know I'm gonna get flogged, but how about an OS .10 LA?
A slightly larger plane, but an easy running engine, available and afordable parts, and even us guys who rarely dabble with 1/2A can run it.

I think your carpetbagger looks like a perfect design for shipping. Maybe a bit too fast for some people, but you could build in a little dihedral and use a PeeWee.

DF
Ask for donations as it moves along- a prop or glow plug etc. and throw it into the box for future guys.
I vote Norvel and will donate one- or will donate a nice reedy or Cox TD - your choice!
No problem- just have fun.

I was thinking that with a "good" engine this might be kinda hot.

I agree with PT. The Honker is significantly heavier and larger and can be pretty quick with a .061. If DF's plane comes in as designed, it should be quite speedy.

An 061 huh? Well it would add significant weight but the airfoil is a monster for lift. It would add the option for throttle too which might be nice. Well I'll start cutting wood tonight and see how I come out for weight and balance.

Plans (for the most part) are done. Oh, and the word GRACE = just a working title. Great Rcu 1/2A Circumnavigational Event. And before you ask no I don't drink a lot. (Give these guys an opening and they'll rip you to shreds, eh Rog?)

Michael --

Actually, I think it would be too fast -- your SS is probably an excellent match for the plane's size. I can't imagine a HONKER style plane at half the weight and 3/4 the span of the original design with a .061. Besides, with NORVELs turning to gold, the plane could be shipped with a SS mounted and another included for parts for 1/3 the price of a NORVEL, or add a Galbreath head and toss in a couple of NELSON plugs. The NELSONs are tough as nails and should last a long time.

Just a a minor comment, you might experiment with a slightly smaller rudder and elevator, keep the same vertical and horizontal tail areas, just reduce the percentage for rudder and elevator. The original HONKER has smaller surfaces, but is still pretty responsive.

Ok, here's an idea for the engine. You should know that I know very little about them, but how about a Thunder Tiger .07? Doesn't it use standard plugs? I'd toss in a few bucks toward the engine.

or...

Here's a "Raymondesque" offer. I've got an "Interceptor Delta" kit sitting in my garage. They used to go for $70 on ebay. I sold plenty of them and they are a quick building .25-40 size kit. Never had a single complaint. I will GIVE it to anyone that donates a TT .07 to the project. If you're interested, pm me for some pictures.

I should add that the offer is only valid if dF wants one...

LOL

PT, always the gentleman.

Your confidence in this design is inspiring. You all are strapping 061s and .10s on the front of this thing and we don't even know if it will fly. I'm cutting wood tonight to crank one out to fly by the weekend. I have both an 049 and a 061 so lets see how it goes with each.

Everybody thanks for the generosity and the offers for engines and equipment. I may take you up on it.

I have been watching this thread and am interested. I have a completedf Honker sitting on the shelf. It has a Black Widow on it at the moment. If it would be better I could put an early, I think, AME 049 on it. It doesn't have a radio in it at the moment. I would think that the best way to ship it around would be to put the every thing but the RX in it and let people put their own RX in it to fly. The only problem that I can see is, with BW and no radio it weighs 14oz on the postal scale. Too heavy?

Ted

A humble stock standard Cox .049 reed might be a good engine to choose, most of us have got a few of 'em, easy to get spares anywhere in the world and very user friendly. The object of DF's exercise is just to get the plane flown in as many countries around the world as possible and then eventually make it back to the U.S.A. It doesn't need to be a pylon racer does it? Survival of both the plane and engine for the long haul should be paramount.
Just my view, I'm not involved in the project.......... John

Yes, A simple Sunday flyer would be ideal. I am fond of the Norvel like AP .061 Wasp motor as they are cheep and reliable on Sig 15% with a kiss of castor added. No need to ship it here as there are already 20 volunteers in NC to fly it and we don't want it bottle necked. Let's get this thing moving! DF, I like your design, any laser cut kits coming out? Hey Rog, I was just kidding Oh and by the way the annual Jump in Rogers &^%$ day is nation wide not statewide. We are working on making it international though.

C'mon guys, even if it's not your favourite engine, I'm sure you can get it running for 5 minutes.

So, is the plane going to be flown by 19 guys in NC, go around the world and then go back to NC for Rog to fly it - just to be on the safe side.
Now it's international! (Sorry Rog, I couldn't resist.)

I must have missed something. Why is Rog cursed?
Oh well- it doesn't really matter why anyways. The fact remains, so just be sure to send the plane through Alabama before he gets it if that's the case.
