Got an email today from Vic who agreed to help with this project by donating covering and the ton of time to do it, and to give Grace a trial shakedown. I got a letter from Vic today and here he gives us an initial report!

Hey dude!

Grace took to the air this afternoon. I couldn't wait till the reedie race. It was a perfect flying evening and I had it in the truck to show a clubmate.
The engine was a bugger to get started and after the first flight I realized the whole cylinder was loose, "there's yer problem!".
It still never really came into tune well. But when the motor did run the plane flew great!
I usually have a bit of up dialed in the elevator just in case I need it but so far I never have this was the case with Grace too. Some clicks of down was all that was needed for level flight. No rudder, straight as an arrow. Loops and rolls are very tight.

In the spirit of Grace my clubmate got a hand at the sticks on the first flight too.
I took it up twice and the second was better than the first as the motor ran better.

Postem!

Vic

I gotta take my hat off to Vic for his superb job of covering and offer him many thanks for all his time and effort into this project.

However it is with melancholy that I have to bid farewell to Grace on her new travel. From the start of this project I never really considered this to be my plane as much as I did OUR plane. I got my start in RC right here flying 1/2A stuff. And as far as designing goes, this plane completely represents the bits and pieces of knowledge I've gleaned from this forum over the last several years. Without the camaraderie of everyone here and the willingness of everyone to help, this project wouldn't have been possible. So from now on, I leave this project in the hands of everyone here at RCU's 1/2A forum. Nothing would make me happier than to see it reach each and every one, and for you to have a little bit of fun with it. Fare thee well Grace, and may you always have a tail wind!

(Edit - RCU wont accept pics upload... Will keep trying.)

Glad to see Grace up flying and starting the journey. Great job building and covering. I really like the colors.

Gee, I'm glad you took that awkward looking landing gear off of her Vic.

You have no idea how hard it was to get that gear to work properly. It's for when you land it at the swamp field. The plane will be able to march itself thru the muck and weeds without the rest of us worring about you getting snake bit.

If I get a chance I am going to make a little spinner too.

That's a very autistic looking covering job Vic! I always thought machinists could only see in black and white?

FLY FLY FLY...and build some ...and maybe have a drink too.

All joking aside guys I am a bit suprised at the lack of response now that the plane is finished. What say ye that we start a new thread announcing the completion and availability to fly it?

We're all waiting for it to be ready to hit the road. I'd wait for the CC fly-in to be over and the plane ready to ship before worrying too much about thread participation.

I'd love to fly that little plane! If you send it this way Skaliwag and I could have a go with it together...

I agree with PT. The fly-in would be a great inaugural event to announce.

Count me in! (I was just waiting for the official press release.) I think there are a couple of Maryland 1/2A flyers in my area, and they'd even be welcome to come over to my place for their flights / use my gear...

Rules? Details? Expectations? Responsibilities of the pilots?

-Joe

Gawd, to get that thing to balance with a .15, I'm gonna have to hack the fuselage off at the leading edge......

Vic, at least I promise to put it back the way it was, [except for the thickness of the hacksaws' kerf].

ArKansas is a little far for me but I plan to motor down to the Tennessee SMALL next September. The only problem is whether or not Grace will still be flyable after all that time. I guess that depends on if we let my evil identical twin by different mothers and fathers via invitro fertilization, thirty years apart - fly it again (I don't want to embarrass him by using his real name).
