Mike, it was definitely touchy. I don't have a lot of R&E experience, but I have two R&E models - Jr. Falcon and Bee-Tween - that I fly from time to time. Grace had a lot of roll coupling with the rudder compared to what I was used to. The high winds were making it difficult to fly, too. You had to be very light on rudder or it would roll on its side and start losing altitude. That could be a CG issue, maybe someone here with more R&E experience can diagnose it. It may simply have been due to too much throw.

Edited to add: The more accomplished pilots than me (everyone else who flew Grace) were having no problem flying it.

David

See my comments on the Traveling Grace thread. I have shipped her on to Lomcevak Duck down in GA.

Here's a clip from Hfenn's thread...

Vicman brought Grace to me today and we went to my club field to fly her. This is one outstanding sport flyer. I was having so much fun that my manners didn’t kick in until we left the field and realized that I hadn’t offered Vic any stick time! Sorry Vic. Anyway, you will see that Vic did get some shutter time on my cheap digital camera. I think he got some good shots, Never mind the fat ugly guy in the shots.

When I installed my JR 610XL Rx, I found the plane balanced 2” back from the leading edge right at the undercamber break point which is in specs. I had .5” elevator throw each way and .75” rudder throw. These throws are about double what Mike specifies so I dialed in 30% expo on both. Vic had flown it rigged like this so I figured I would give it a go. These settings make a very lively plane that stunts well. If you are not used to this I highly recommend you follow Mike’s recommended setup.

I did get a chance to do some updating to the Duty Roster this weekend. However if you had previously sent in a request to be added, and you dont see your name on the list I apologize. Please contact me with a PM and I will add you to the roster.

From now on, in fairness to all pilots, any new requests will be added in the order they are received.

Thanks for your participation!

As most of you know, I missed the CC event due to circumstances beyond my control so all I can say is... Grace must be one hellava plane to have survived

Couple of pics for ya. Grace is on the way to PTUlmer now.

There was no one else at the field to take pictures of me with her, so I took a couple with the planes that hang out here. They really own the place, but they're nice enough to let me stay here.

Here's Grace with Eleanor. She's an old lady and gets a little cranky at times, but still loves the little ones.

They liked playing games, like king of the hill, but Eleanor got frustrated when she lost Grace playing hide and seek.

Here's Grace with Tom. He's friendly, but plays a little rough, so they didn't spend much time together.

Ray or Flugg....I've searched here and could not find the type of servos used to meet this weight of 13.5 oz. Any ideas?

Grace is currently using Hitec HS-55's and they work fine as a light duty servo. For a few extra bucks you can get the HS-65HB which uses Karbonite gears and is a little more durable and has more torque.

GRACE is now in my possession! It really is a nice looking plane. Vic even did a great job covering it. The video camera is charging and I'm off-shifting Thursday, so it may happen that day. If not, then Sunday. Depends on Flyswatter and the weather. I couldn't stand not adding a personal touch...

Success! Well, mostly. I wish we could have had a calmer day. The wind never dropped below 10mph and was gusting much higher. But, as they tell me at the field, I got skills! So up in the air it went. The first flight was rich and was it's own special version of fun. The kind where you stay on the sticks and fly in circles...
Second flight I passed the controls over to Randy (club pres and the best pilot I've met... and I've met CP!) It was still a bit rich but he still had fun. It would do a terrific tail slide even in the high winds above tree level.

The third run was perfect (and mine!). Loops were either tight or large depending simply on how you wanted them. Tight loops resulted in no loss of altitude and you could do them for the entire tank. Rolls weren't even close to axial, but it's R/E. So that was expected. At low rates they would make you pray. I used Mike's recommended throws and they worked perfectly. Not sensitive in the least. At low rates I pulled some low level stunts and rounded the pylons several times. It would make a decent reedie racer.

The wind was a terrible foe and we kept it simple. So, even though I got video there's not a lot of excitement in it. Plus the dark gray skies made it difficult to see and even more difficult for the camera to focus. I'm working on it right now!

I should admit that it was difficult for me to clean it up and slip it into the packaging. I really wanted some good airtime with it. For those in it's future, I wish you calm days and plenty of fuel.

The video so far is Randy's time at the sticks. That's good ol' Flyswatter doing the tech work and I'm behind the camera.
