Tonight I instlled the turtle deck, the rear turtle deck cap and the former for the rudder cap.
Then I installed the rudder.
I measured and checked the alignment a bunch of times, sanded to fit and glued it in using probond. I was careful not to use so much pro bond that it would plug up the slots for the hinges.

For good measure I ran a string from the center of F1 to the center of the rudder trailing edge. I used the string to measure up all along the fuse at various formers and also to quadruple check the rudder alignment. Everything looks true.

Then I ran in to my first problem... when I instlled the turtle deck there was not a lot of overhang on the rear. Just enough for the cap. When I did my dry fit I knew it would all be tight but I figured there was enough overhang to make it all fit okay. So once I got the TD in place I installed the cap and figured I could trim the overhang on the front to allow room for the hatch. Well... lets just say its going to be a VERY tight fit. There is not enough overhang on the front to fit the cap plus the rear hatch plate.

Then I put the hatch plate up against the TD and it is much much bigger than the TD (see pics.)

So I have called it a night for now and will worry about what to do tomorrow.

Oh yea - I was ordering a few more things today and I discovered that the Graphtec Aeroworks 35% Extra 260 gear is almost identical dimension to the Panzl - a much better match than the GP Cap 580.

You'll have to shape the rear hatch former to match up with the turtle deck, not sure why that piece is like that. Maybe to make up for differences in the pre sheeted turtle decks. Remember to undersize it a little so the canopy sits flush with the turtledeck.

Thanks Jim thats what I figured. Once I re-shape and get the turtle deck and former trimmed back all will be well. Just a bit more work than I expected but nothing show stopping

Went out and flew mine again, even after well over 400 flights on these Panzl's, I'm still impressed everytime I fly it.

Ha - I wish I could fly. -29c outside and a foot of snow. No end in sight. Oh well... build, build, build!

I got the rudder capped in. To do this I made a template with paper. Then I cut 1/8 balsa and beveled the edge to try and make a clean butt against the rudder. I used some tri-stock to make a support for the bottom of the sheeting. A little filler and voila.

For the hatch I made a few changes. I capped the turtle deck and there was just enough room for the hatch. I added the rails and stringers. Then I used some 3/8 square balsa and tapered tri-stock to attach a 1/8 balsa back to the hatch (and re-enforce the sides to support the canopy more.) I like the look of a solid back piece. The lite-ply plate the kit came with was really badly warped too. I used spruce stringers for the long part that runs to the back of the hatch. I have the sheeting glued and wetted... it's taped to the hatch now to dry and set.

Starting to look like an airplane fuse now...

The Canopy looks huge - is that the right one? It looks like a 2-seater Extra canopy to me. Do I just trim it shorter to look like the Panzl one? It doesn't seem to have that Panzl hump in the front...

Thats the canopy, I know it's huge, but you'll end up cutting off alot of it. Let me see if I can find a pic, if not I'll go take one and a measurement also.

15 1/2" from the front lip to the rear of the canopy for the length, but I suggest you just keep trimming a small bit at a time to get it perfect.

One more very important thing that I forgot about. For some reason the stab mounting holes in the fuse are off, you need to mount the stab ply root ribs and redrill the holes in the fuse.

Jim - thanks, you're the man! That at least gives me an idea approximately what length I am cutting to.

I'll be finishing the hatch tonight, then filling and sanding everything. I'll likely be setting up the wings and stabs tomorrow / Sunday. I have an aeroperfect meter I plan to use to set the incidences.

The motor box will be done last... I went ahead and ordered a SWB mount for the DA100.

Not sure if I asked, but any idea what scheme your going with yet? I think if I were to do another, I'd cover it in this scheme.

Jim - I am doing Loren Smith's scheme. I also like the black and yellow but it would take a lot of effort to paint the spinner and cowl... a LOT of effort.

Gotcha, that's pretty much the same scheme as Chris Panzl's red plane. One thing to think about though is that dark color. Whether it's dark blue or black, you may have some bubbling issues out in the hot sun.
