Status: offline 		The saga continues. I have yet to "re-maiden" the Panzl. I had a LOT of Spektrum 2.4GHz problems with slow response, lockout and then the transmitter actually packed it in (died.) It sure was nice when it worked but I think they need to do some more development on it... All my stuff has gone back to Horizon now and I switched back to 72mhz.

I have a noise gremlin somewhere in the airplane that I am having a hard time finding. I fix the range from one side/front/back and then it just moves somewhere else! Frustrating to say the very least. I've done enough testing now that I know I must have a loose connection, loose bolt, metal on metal... somewhere...

On the good side the repairs were super minor...

Now if only I could find my noise issue and pass a range check I might be able to fly it!

Switching back to 72MHz has been a nightmare - every single airplane had some kind of problem that 2.4 was masking. In all cases except the Panzl it was easy to find. Oh well... maybe, fingers crossed, I will get it figured out for this weekend.

Almost all of the problems I have helped out on are the ignition, even tho it works it sometimes gives out rf in some weird ways.

A buddy of mine has had persistent problems with his DA equiped Yak and change reciever, servos entirely, finally bought my 9Z and still his throttle servo twitched.
Changed switches and their location ...same thing. I finally cut up a aluminum baking tray at the field and wrapped his ignition box in it.hey presto no glitches or twitches. We swapped ignitions and the problem is fixed without the foil.

His was only effecting the back end of the reciever and it never failsafed even tho set (checked myself).
Range tested fine except the throttle played up at midrange.

you have'nt split a cowl, but you built an entire plane from scratch!!
Great job..... Sorry for you issues with your transmitter.
It seems like you really motored through the build bacK in NOV11 06 but then things slowed......
Is this plane easy to frame and sheet up? How did you get the graphics to turn out well on your plane?
Are canns for engines nesessaryfor competitions???

Status: offline 		The build is very easy as all the surfaces are pre-sheated. You are just building the fuse, sanding and covering. It is a GREAT giant first build, highly recommended.
Yes, the build was fast. Then I waited for snow, and more snow... then wind, then finally I flew it and ripped out the gear, then my 2.4 issues came and my DX-7 died LOL. Now I am so so close... and RF issues on 72MHz.

I found loose bolts tonight and my gasket seals were gone - so that is a very good source for metal-on-metal noise. I'm not ruling out the ignition but this is not a new engine and has never had a problem before. I will re-test with the bolts tightened and new sealant in place. I also found the spark plg wires had frayed in the clamp-locks. Never would have guessed that could happen so I now spiral wrapped them in plastic.

I was impressed how clean you split that Cap cowl so that why I wanted to know exactly what you did. I have a spare one and I am going to do the same thing... and also I am going to order one for my Panzl and split it too. They will probably need a cowl ring for support as well and it will add a little weight but the convenience is great.

The graphics come from a friend who owns a sign shop. They are vinyl cut by a computerized cutter and use transfer tape so applying them is easy. It's cheap for me too since he only charges me for materials. Lots of places can do thi for you but it is VERY expensive if you don't have a friend giving you a deal.

Cans are not necessary but they are nice. Very quiet, don't rob power and maximize your sound score at contests. The Cap can be modified to fit them but it is a fair amount of work and adds 1 to 1.5 lbs due to the extra wood working and weight of the cans.

The Slimline DA100 mufflers are very quiet for normal mufflers and I'm sure the JTec ones are too - at least a lot better than the DA "howlers" LOL.

Later tonight I'll go to a near by field and re-range test. Fingers crossed!!!

Are you running canisters in the Panzl. If so check to make sure that the header and cans are not in contact with each other. make sure the teflon coupler gives you a little gap in the fitting.

That is a great source for noise. I have found this to be a problem on twice before ( not my stuff) One of our TOC pilots had this happen to him and we tracked it down to the header and cans contacting each other

I checked tha last night and they are not touchin but they are very close - so under vibration they might. I'm going to move them a little and then use some small sheet metal screws to ensure they can't move. The clamps are strong but warm oil covered teflon is ging to be slippery.

It still failed range checking last night so maybe the canisters are it - or maybe I have some electronics that are not right... I'll keep investigating and eventually I'll get there.

When I was unhooking the old electronic I found a cut in an extension exposing bare wire. Just for kicks I left it in place. I installed the Weatronic and it was way better but still glitched a little. I replaced the bad extension an voila - she's passing a huge range check from all sides no issues!

Now if the wind would die down to somewhere sub gale-force I could go fly it!

My wife was kind enough to let me go out to fly yesterday morning (Mothers day!) since Saturday was a blow out. I still had a couple of issues with the range check but after routing the 2nd antenna out the top of the plane all was good. Dead calm, blue skies, nice and warm so up she went!

The Panzl is FANTASTIC!

It needed 0 clicks of anything to fly straight and level across the box. My CG is neutral - roll inverted on a 45 up line and let off the stick it just keeps going on that line with no pitching at all. Roll inverted and stay off the sticks and it flies level all the way across the box. No down elevator needed on down lines. Needs maybe a touch of right thrust for up lines (I'll probably mix that in the radio.)

It is VERY responsive, that could be the CG. It’s not “pitchy” though – just sensitive. I am using much lower rates than the "low" rates - which is good because they were still too much for IMAC low rates. I may add a little more expo as everything is very powerful and tiny, tiny movements are needed around center. My rates are: Ail 20 deg up / 15 deg down (that’s almost axial – needs a little tweaking.) Elevator is 11 deg up and down, Rudder is maybe 25 deg which is too much The rudder and elevator have more authority than anything else I have flown - even the Cap. The rudder is even more effective than my composite Sukhoi which can do 540 deg hammerheads! It does KE with just a small deflection and stall turns are a breeze with no wobble coming out.

At 25lbs 9oz (that's what I am at with a Weatronic Rx, no wheel pants, 5" Kavan tires and a PT 27x10 2-blade) "authority" is an understatement with a DA100 up front. It goes vertical at a steady pace at 50% + 1 click of throttle. 75% throttle and it rockets up, 100% and it's almost like a little electric park flyer on a fresh charge - Whoosh LOL!!!

I should never get any 0’s for spin entries. To stall it the nose is pointed way up maybe 30 or 35 deg it stops and in the calm it just started to mush forward. The spins are nice – very axial and vertical with the plane rotating around the lower wing tip.

Landing was okay. With no wind to help slow it down I went around a couple of times. When I did land I used the whole runway + about 1 inch. Just have to get used to it before I’ll be comfortable slowing it right down.

I LOVE THIS AIRPLANE!!!

Status: offline 		Several more flights today. I'm at 10 flighs total now (that's 2.5hrs of stick time!!!) The airplane is getting very comfortable and I almost have the throws dialed to where I want them. I still need to take out a small amount of elevator. I should finish initial trimming in the next few flights and really start to practice the sequences. Hard to describe how good this airplane is - it is near perfect the pilot just needs work!!!

So far since my shakey start and switching to the Weatronic it has been rock solid. The airframe is holding up well, nothing has come loose and the DA100 is running perfect.

Status: offline 		Does the PAK come with the aluminum wing and stab tubes? I got my PAK delivered yesterday and can't seem to find them. Also are there any printed plans for the fuse?
