Hello everybody;

Somebody know the correct proportion of ingredients to mix to make my own fuel for Zenoah G23 Glow version (23 cc) ?
I have a lot of doubts about the proportions (Castor oil, syntethic oil, methanol and nitro) and if this kind of engine needs a % of nitro.

Please if you know about this, let me know.

Thanks.
Daniel

Horizon recommends CoolPower Super T, what ever that is, in 5% to 15% nitro, in another place it simply says, "glow fuel".

I used Cool Power "Super T" for my ST2500. It has 7.5% nitro and 9% lube. You can make the same thing by mixing a gallon of racing methanol with a gallon of 15% nitro Cool Power. I did this many times.

With the needle bearing crank, it can supposedly be run safely on as little as 5% oil. Personally, I would run with a little more oil just to be on the safe side.

I just received the G23 glow version I'd ordered last week from Horizon. Apparently it was one of their very last ones.

Anyway, there is a supplemental sheet to the manuals, and it says that they have had good luck with a mixture of 5 Oz. of BlendZall Racing Castor (available through Horizon)mixed to one gallon of methanol. This works out to be 3.76%. OTOH, they also recommend ST fuel (e.g. Horizon website), which AFAIK typically has around 12% oil. Now I'm confused.

What's even more confusing is that on the same addendum sheet, it recommends a "no nitro"fuel be used with this engine. However, most ST fuel I know has at least some nitro in it, typically 10%. Hmmm?

I think I will give Horizon a call tomorrow to clear this up. One engine is missing in my order anyways (I ordered 3, the shipped 2).

the reason i used the 32 to 1 ratio of oil is that is what they reccomend when you use gasoline why would it be any different for methanol fuel it burns at a lower tempature than gasoline i have had no problems to date and you get a lot less oil on your plane the same as if you use a gasoline mix

Actually, methanol has little inherent lubricity compare to gasoline. Gasoline, afterall, is essentially a very lightweight oil, whereas methanol is not. Plus gasoline is multi-fractioned, so that even when the higher fractions evaporate, the lower ones remain and provide some lubricity. Methanol is single fraction, so when it's gone, it's all gone.

You were probably okay, since 1:32 works out to be around 3%, which is not much below the recommended 3.76%. But I would go no lower.

Thank you guys, I'm testing right now.
I 'll comment to you the results later.

If you want to know the plane where i like to install the G23, take a look in www.camodel.com.ar, the Extra 24%.
This is a very good quality model factory here in Argentina, this guys use laser technology in his models.

Hey Volfy, what about your missing engine ???!!!

Daniel, thanks for asking. They apparently ran out of stock on that missing one and so they just didn't send it - but they sure invoiced and charged me for it though. To give them credit, the lady I spoke to on the phone went through a lot of trouble to figure out what went wrong and, in the end, offered me a comparable replacement. So all's well that ends well.

That's a beautiful plane you mentioned. Planesplus.com had the 27% version on sale for US$199 a while ago. I'm still kicking myself for missing out on it. I don't know what plane I'll put my G23g on. It was originally bought to go on a friend's GP PT-19, but it didn't fit the firewall. His loss is my gain.

I don't have FAI (0% nitro) fuel right now, so I'll have to buy some before I can bench test my G23g. When I do, I will share my notes here with you. Meanwhile, I look forward to hearing your test results.
