What is the difficulty of building a slowpoke. I'm looking for my first kit and this plane has caught my eye.

Hi,
I would not want to tackle this kit if it was my first one. A better one would be a simple trainer plane that was not too expensive. Great plane's kits aren't the easiest in my opinion. Sig wasn't too bad when I built a Sig kadet Junior which they don't make anymore. This plane is more complex to build. Build a simple and kinda medium size trainer, unless you have a lot of skill and experience flying arfs. If that is the case I would build a nice sig kadet, a cub, or something out of the ordinary that looks more simple in design. Hope this helps. Just my opinion.

Hi BBoard, I'm currently building a Slow Poke 40 kit, and this kit is not for first time builders.

What people are talking about with Great Planes kits are that where one piece of balsa could be used, they will have four pieces that have to be glued together to make the bigger piece.

The planes themselves, overall, are not complicated, its the total parts count that increases the difficulty.

If you were copying the kit to make a second plane from the kit, the parts count would probably be 2/3 of the original kit.

Is the parts count like this on most of the GP kits like thr RV-4 and such. I'm mainly looking for a scaleish sport plane that dont look like a 3-d ship

All the GP kits I've seen looked like they were almost engineered by the same guy. The construction with all the little diecut sheet parts that had to be glued together to make a larger sheet part were all the same.

One thing about Great Planes kits is that you can download the assembly manuals for all the current ones from the Tower site.

Hey smooth, you get around to building a Slow Poke yet?

SLICK

I was afraid someone was going to ask me that. In the past two weeks I think I've been in my workshop maybe 10 minutes (to charge a battery on one of my foamies). Busy with the bride, the kids, the job, etc etc etc. My real issue is that my job takes me out of town for a couple weeks starting next week so my prospects are bleak for the time being. One of my problems with a kit build is that when I start a build I like to go like a maniac and finish quickly. Maybe I should learn to slow down a bit and actually ENJOY the build...hmmmm.

I'll check back in when I start the building, but don't anyone hold their breath!

I know what you mean. I'm the same way. I actually started building the British colored Slow Poke and finished the major construction within 2 weeks. Of course this was during the summer and I wasn't in school yet so I had plenty of time to work many hours of the day. The covering I usually take my time on, and finish it in about a week or so. I hope you enjoy building a Slow Poke and can't wait for pictures!

Check out this one?[image][/image]

If your looking for Your first build, this is not the kit for You! try something like a four star 60. Laser cut parts, You can set the wing up without any glue, the parts fit that well.

I streeched my Slow Poke 30" added about 6 oz of lead under the OS .46 XT, added flaps and vintage wheels, flies great, gets lots of attention.
