Hi all and thanks for all the inspiration
This is my first post here!

I've had numerous 'go's' at RC flight over the years and have quite a few bits & pieces sitting on the shelves. Anyways, thought I'd have a go once more, had a bit of a read around and was going to order a Hobbyzone Super Cub LP but they were out of stock and the guy at the shop recommended the EF, so I thought I'd follow someone's advice just for a change
Anyways, I had my first flight today!
5 sec later it was wedged in the top of a tree!
30 min. later I had it down in one piece and all set for another go. This time I got it up & away safely into clear air and was able to actually do some real flying for the first time - just simple stuff but so exhilarating after quite a few false starts over the years. I even got it down in one piece with a not too shabby landing. Of course I had to have another go with another battery, but the wind had started to pickup and things went terribly wrong and I landed into the back of a cyclone wire fence - oh well, parts are cheap and so more wings are now on their way!

I've built a A123 LiFe pack to try out - 3 x 18650 (1100mah) cells with the finished pack weighing about 140g, so pretty close to the stock 8.4V 900mah NIMH pack. A123 should deliver a little more punch and longer flights and the cells should be more durable and allow much faster field recharge. I'll let you know how they go!

I've also ordered:
* 1800kv BL inrunner http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=4491
* 30a Turnigy plush ESC
* 2 X 1500mah 3S 20C LiPo's http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=6307
* 2 X 6X4 props with adapter
I hope my calculations are in the ballpark - I'm going more for efficiency than outright speed and I don't plan on adding the upgrades until I have got the better of the stock parts. If I got it seriously wrong let me know - I figured an inrunner would be easier to fit but I was also interested in something like this 1000kv outrunner with maybe a bigger prop:
http://wattsuprc.com.au/product_detail.asp?pid=EW2213-1000

One issue I had 'out of the box' is the stock motor spinning on/off with the throttle at zero. The servo's are silent. I assume this is the fault of poor QC on the stock ESC and the new Turnigy should fix the problem - am I on the right track? Should I ask the store for a replacement or would that just be a waste of time fitting another stock ESC?

I do have a couple of Spektrum 2.4Ghz Tx's on the shelf - is there an affordable/compatible Rx you guys would recommend or should I just stick with the 27mhz FM Tx and get *which* Rx to suit??

I used the fibreglass tape on the wing but don't have any CF rod to hand - where do you guys recommend sourcing some?

Sorry for a mammoth opening post and thanks for reading thus far.
I was a little skeptical about this 3ch bird, but boy am I rapt to finally have soloed - such a great buzz!!
Looking forward to many more flights and learning more from all of you!

Edit: added correct kv for motor I bought

Hi RGH..

1000kv on a 6x4 prob wont lift...2100kv was a decent flight....I did have my finding a few pages back.
The CF bar had to mail order it in, A few pages back or look for Loungfly.
If you dont want to crash for no reason , green bin out side is where you'll find my OEM radios.
TP SG9 servos as the OEM will break!!!
Tape is a must..

Thanks for the feedback Jaav!

Ah, bugger! You're running 2S LiPo aren't you? I was hoping the 3S I plan on using would give me sufficient prop speed. As a newb I was trying to avoid making the thing too fast for my meagre piloting skills....
I read the first 20 or so pages and then skipped towards the end and missed your findings....

Will a 7x4 prop fit and will it give enough thrust on 1000kv?

Oh well - more research!

Missed that too - seems I only missed reading the pages I needed

I bit the bullet and ordered a Spektrum AR6110 Rx and I have the e-watts digi servo's on the way so all stock electronics will soon be in the 'spares' bin!

Hey rgh, that inrunne you posted a link to is a 1800kv. if that is the right link a 6" prop will make it fast enough but 1000kv on a 7: prop would be better for down low,(read C`mon you ****, pull up), power. which what you should probably be aiming for. Down low snot got me outta more trouble than it got me into

Thanks for the reply Chris!
I've got myself all confused!
1) The Hobbycity BL I've ordered IS a 1800kv - so hopefully no probs with the 6X4
2) I've also ordered the 1000kv from Wattsuprc and some 7X5 props
Hopefully that's a bit clearer and either setup will be OK for where I'm at
So which combo should I try first do yer reckon? The 1000kv/7X5?
Sounds like 'down low snot' is where I'm at

Is there a recommended thrust in grams for newbie EF pilots?

I've also ordered a spare fuse as I figure I'm going to need it once I start trying to fit the new gear together...

Hi RGH. The 7x5 won't fit on the EF unless you grind down the tips a bit. The 1800kv looks like it should be OK - I would defintely try that first. I'd be a bit concerned about the max current rating using 3s but then people are reporting success with it. Also with 3s/1800kv I'd think you are going to have a pretty high top speed but the little inrunner won't have much low end grunt. You could perhaps try it with a 2s battery first.

As for CF, most hobby shops have a standard supply of CF tubes/bars. There is usually a 3x1mm bar and a 10x2 mm bar but only a couple of each. I get them when I see them. If you are flying around slow I'd use a few strips of the 3x1. When you get into crazy stuff then a strip or two of 10x2 works well.

Really interested to know how you get along with the LiFe packs. I'm thinking of giving them a go. With your 1500mAh packs you may have to add a bit of weight up front with them. The 2200mAh 20c packs seem to have about the right weight.

So where you located?

I've got a linisher (big belt sander) in the shed so grinding the blades should be OK - will be sure to balance them afterwards tho!

Maybe the lower voltage of the LiFe might suit the 1800kv - I've got some 2S/850mah (and lead sinkers) I could experiment with for short flights!

Thanks! I'll have to pop into my local - with 5 kids I usually try to avoid walking into hobby stores and shop online, looks like a detour next time I'm off getting groceries

Hobbycity have their 3S/20C/2200mah packs for $14 - I might see if I can get some of those into one of my orders!
I'm in Wahroonga about 30min NW of Sydney CBD I 'spose I should edit my profile!

If ya have to shave a bit off the 7x5, ( i keep forgetting i run different mount and get a bit more clearance) it would be worthwile coz a 7x5 cut down to a 6x5 will generate more thrust than a 6x5. Got me buggered why, given that pitch size is the amount of travel per rpm, but according to mr watt meter it does.
so in short, IMHO 7x5 to start to get your eye in. when yo shave prop, you only need about 5 or so mm clearance from boom. once you start kickin the crud out of it may pay to go the 6" setup

What Spektrum Tx do you have? It has to be the DX5e, DX6i or DX7 to work with the AR6110. Its because of the new DSM2 technology. I have the AR6110e, think so does Jewy on one of his, and they go great. Better than the horrible stock tx and rx you get.

I've got a DX6i and a DX7 - I had a thing for heli's for a while there - buggers to try and fly and the noise freaked out the kids, so the whole backyard hobby concept was shot down... I used to import the MSH Protos 425mm blade heli and so I've got a few goodies leftover from that venture

Yep, five kids under 10 y/o, we finally worked out what was causing it, so I've put a stop to it I work weekends, study and look after the kids whilst my good wife brings home most of the bacon! Won't be long before the boys will want to be flying and showing me up!

Welcome RGH!

Don't think too hard about how it will go... just keep it simple and try what fits easily. Both the 1800kV and the 1000kV will be fine in the EF with the right prop, either a 6x4 or a 5x5. The 3s LiPo's (11.1v) you have ordered will deliver a little more speed than the 3xA123 being a lower voltage at 9.9v.

Attached is a list of setups used here... it's a little out of date but a good idea of some of the mods done to the EF...

Thanks for the reassurance on the motor/prop combo's! Yes, the A123 cells have lower voltage than LiPo, but I figured it gave me another 'speed' variable to play with and the amps you can pump into these cells when you recharge is just crazy! No problem to recharge in under 10min.

That spreadsheet a great resource - thanks so much for posting it - once I get my mods sorted I'll add my options and repost it if that's OK?
