As for the taildragger. I used the same size wheels as recommended when I built mine as a tail dragger. Actually, come to think of it, that was the gear that started on my Tiger II. You do need to get the mains in front of the CG, though. I used fiberglass struts bolted into the fuselage, right in front of the wing. (Just make sure you reinforce the floor first!)

Tom

Yep, that's exactly how I did mine - mains from my T2. My tail wheel is 3/4" (of unknown origin), but a Sullivan with 3/4 to 1" would be fine.

Thanks for the info on the wheels. When I built m Tiger, I made allowances for someday converting it to a tail dragger. I glued a small maple block in the fuse right in front of the wing and also added an extra strip of ply to the bottom of the fuse at the tail so I could have something to screw into.

thanks for the interest in my tiger. it weighs 10 lbs.,more due to my building which is on the heavy side.i haven't flown it yet because i am a bit concerned that the present OS 91 fs may not be enough.i was considering a 91 2 stroke, either an OS or a Magnum.any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks, Freddy

I would think the FS 91 will be more than adequate. I would be curious to see how others respond!

Freddy S, I have a Magnum 91 four stroke in mine and have plenty of power. Your FS 91 should be fine.

Well my Tiger did the maiden flight today! Some issues with the engine and prop combo, OS FS 91 with a 13X8 APC. It just
seemed real sluggish, not at all what I expected from the 91. Changed the prop to a 14X6 and it flew much better. Apparently
the engine still needs some break in too. It was pulled from another plane which I got from a guy at our field (P40 Flying Tiger).
Not exactly sure of the history on the P40 or the engine but from what the other members tell me, it may not have been flown all
that much.

All in all, the plane is a bit slower than my dragon lady but thats a good thing. It goes where you point it, even straight up!
Some of my trim striping came loose so it cut things kinda short. After some minor tweaks she will be ready to go back up.

I think I'm gonna like this plane...!

Congratulations on your successful maiden dlan! Glad to hear it went well for ya. I'm still enjoying mine - great fun. After seeing what you said about the 14x6 prop, I'm going to put mine on to see the difference (currently running the 13x8).

Hello everyone, I just started building a Tiger 60 (I am Deluxing it with my own gear) and could use some advice. My fuse is done (I always do things out of order) and I just finished the horizontal stabilizer. From what I can tell from this thread, this plane is typically tail heavy. The balsa that CG gave me for the tail feathers is more like white oak. I have never seen balsa this hard, ever. The whole stabilizer weighs just under 4oz. Should I scrap this and start over? Keep in mind that the vertical fin and rudder are made out of the same stuff. I know I could save several ounces back there without compromising the structural integrity by using new wood.

The TG 60 Deluxe supplemental instructions say "use thin balsa sheeting to enclose the wheel well" (nose gear). Is this really necessary on the nose gear?

I would love to hear more feedback on prop usage. I want to use a 15X7 vs the 14X6 that's on the plane now. It's whithin spec for the motor and my thought is that it will (should) provide more pull at lower
rpm.

Any takers on this one?

ARFimpaired,

If by "enclosing" the wheel well the insructions are referring to the balsa piece that is flush to the bottom of the fuse below the engine, I personally wished I woluld have left it out. That piece makes it a hassle to mount the control arm for front wheel and I'm not sure that it really adds anything to the structure as there is piece of ply just above it. Granted, it's not an area you really ever have to get back in to once the wheel is mounted. I just remember what a pain it was.

By the way, got a chance to maiden mine as newly converted tail dragger. I love it

m skaggs,

The part that you are thinking of is at the very front and bottom of the fuse. I am talking about lining the actual strut/wheel well with vertical pieces of balsa just below the fuel tank platform. This would keep crud from working its way into the interior of the fuse. It would make sense to replace the tank platform with a larger piece that would entirely seal off the tank compartment (skip the rubberband mounting of the tank). That way the wheel well lining could go between the bottom of the fuse and the fuel tank platform.
I would like to know how other builders have done this. Maybe I am worrying too much but where I fly, my planes come back covered with bugs, dirt, and fuel.

My balsa woes are much worse than I thought. After discovering the VERY dense tailfeather wood I went thru the rest of the kit and found the whole kit contaminated with this stuff. I called CG ready to complain thinking I will never get any resolution but to my suprise, I talked to a very nice lady who gave me a number to call today. She told me to make a list and give it to this lady and she will send me replacement wood. Very nice and unexpected!!

It would be very helpful to me if someone could give me and Idea as to how much nose weight I will need for the Deluxe build with a Super Tigre .61.

Congratulations on your maiden. I can't wait to do mine. All of my other planes are tail draggers but I wanted to try retacts all the way around on this one.

That super tigre 61 will pull it around as will the 91 surpass 4 stroke but not with much authority. I tried an OS 61 FX and also the OS 91 surpass, switched to a super tigre 90 and it made a world of difference. Unlimited vertical and the rolls are out of sight now!

Seems like everyone ends up putting weight in the nose of that tiger 60. Me? I used 2 C-size batteries and 2 double a's all wrapped up with USPS tape then strapped in to get mine to balance in the mid range. I build mine to fly, not to look at!

Now were those batteries Duracells or Energizers (not Radio Shack I hope)? Just kidding. Thanks for the information. It gives me a good idea of weight considerations for the rest of the construction. By the way, 2-C cells and 2-AA cells weigh 6.68 oz.

I talked to a lady at CG, aka Great Planes, about replacing my rock hard balsa wood. She was not sure that she could replace it since the kit was a Christmas present from last year. After talking to her supervisor she was given the go ahead and told me that it would ship today. That is a great way to keep me as a looooong time customer. Awesome!
Her name was Mary Ann and she was about as pleasant as you could be. Thank you Mary Ann.

I am using a Super Tigre .61 because I like them, someone who does not like them gave me this one (brand new), thank you very much, and I am building this plane because I want a lazy day easy flying airplane. I have other "unlimited verticals" that I fly when I get enough coffee in me. From what I hear about how well the Tiger 60 flies I may change the power plant at a later date.

Thanks again!

NICE!
I'd be really interested in seeing some more detail of your cowl. Is that a built-up or molded?
And where did you find the Tigger? I had 2 smaller ones from my daughter's baby shampoo in my T2, but only recovered one from the wreckage.
Now I need a slightly larger one for my 60.

Cowling is "built-up" in what used to be called "Control-Line Style" Basiclly you build a plywood "ring" the same size as the rear of the spinner....you shim out the ring about 3/32" from the back plate of the spinner....then you just add 4 plywood "stringers"....one each every 90 degrees.....the fill in balsa in between.

Tigger was on the "clearance" rack at the Disney store in the local mall....$ 4.00

The enclosed cowl, stainless prop spinner and 3 blade prop certainly spice up the appearance.

I thought so - the shape looks almost identical to what I've done with mine (pics earlier in the thread).
It really does add a clean, finished look to the plane. Now I just need to get motivated enough to cover it!

This was the "prototype" of about 7 or 8 major improvement mods that I wanted to make. This one had an OS .70 FS II, next one will have an OS .91 FS II.

38 flights, and I was just getting good and comfortable......and she got away from me.

It was my Last flight of the day, I was tired, it was getting windier by the minute, and she got outside the "box".....behind the trees....out of line of sight......and that was it.

The .70 gave it about 80% of the power it needed.

1hp for a 9 or 10 lb airplane with 890 sq.in. was "OK" but not crisp.

Kind of like pulling a large camper trailer with a small truck with a V6. You can pull the camper....but don't try to speed up any hills or pass anyone.

1.6hp for a lighter built plane should be better and give more "margin"

It is easier to tow a trailer with a 3/4 ton truck with a V-10 or a Cummins Diesel.

There's new life in the hangar!
With my busy schedule and diversion into heli's over the winter, the Tiger build had an untimely period of inactivity. That and making the mistake of pausing before getting the covering process started... However, I've gotten some new life breathed into the project. I succumbed to the temptation of Spektrum's giveaway offer and bit the bullet to buy the module and a couple Rx's for my 8103. With that, I got started on the seasonal maintenance and radio upgrades on my existing flyers. While I was at the LHS (already overspending anyway) I picked up the Ultracote needed to finish the Tiger. So over the weekend, I finally found the motivation to get out the covering tools and get started. I didn't get any farther than the rudder, but it's a start! I'll start posting more pics when there is a little more to show, but at least the ball is now rolling and there is a renewed hope that the Tiger will take to the air this season!

Krossk,

My Tiger is also in the covering stage. I will post some pics soon. I made quite a few changes to mine.
