hey, i was just wondering what you guys do for scheduled maintenance? i have a little webra .40 that i never really did a whole lot to as far as maintenance wise, and now it has crud and varnish caked on it which is very hard to clean. aside from that problem, nothing else was really wrong withit. after run oil and a plug change was all that i was doing.
Is there some other things i can do after a certain amount of flights/run time? It wouldnt bother me if i was "over doing it", but that is better than "under doing it". Right now, i feel that there probably is some other maintenance that i should be doing, but im not sure what it is.
any help will be greatly appreciated
thx,
andrew

Most often you actually do one more harm than good to disassemble it.

If the bearings fail or you are going to put it on a new plane, you can crock pot the engine with antifreeze and cleanit up like new.

I have washed them with alcohol and got most of the crud off.

What ever you do, do not use any even slightly caustic cleaners on the engine. Things like oven cleaner will turn the engine a dull dark gray color that you can never change.

so other than a nice quick cleaning to get everyday dirt and grime off, there isnt really any?
i try to make a habbit of changing the glow plug at least a few times per season (if theres no troubles)
would rebalancing the prop every so many flights help?
one of my previous hobbies was hot rodding, and there was always some kind of maintenance that could be performed, so maybe im just not used to the simplicity of 2 cycle engines........

If you notice any nicks in the prop or have a ground strike, i would check the balance again. Don't forget that a prop can be out of balance 90 degrees to the prop blades also.

As I mentioned, alcohol and a old tooth brush will do wonders on a model engine. Might not get everything but will do a pretty good job.

There is a detergent at the grocery store called Dawn Power Dissolver that will work pretty good also. But it is slightly high in PH so will dull your finish on the engine if left there for a long time. Put it on - let it set no more than 30 min - Brush with the tooth brush - Then rinse away. You might do this more than once.
