Anyone who has experice flying a "heavy metal" giant scale warbird will tell you that the wing loading on this model is no big deal. Come on guys it's not a trainer.

The GP Seawind has a wing loading of 41oz and that thing was a very nice flying plane.

Most of the Seawinds flown from water did not have the retracts installed and the wing loading was closer to 37. And we all know what kind of reputation that airplane has!

The Seawind does fly well. It just has a bit of difficulty with take-offs and landings. I suspect that the 310 will fly fine, and very scale, once you get it off the ground and as long as both engines are running. Landing speeds might be a little high, "but hey, the full scale is that way too." I also suspect that a substantial percentage of them will not survive their maiden flight.

To hell with it's reputation, I just loved mine. In fact, I'm hoping to pick up another at this winter's swap meet

That's very possible, many modelers bite off more than they can chew, even if they think they're ready.

Hi Folks,

Just wanted to comment on the weight.

I took plans from Das Ugly Stick, extended the wingspan, increased horizontal stab area and fuselage length, put on two(2) La 40's and scratch built it. Took about 120 plus hours. Overall weight came up at 7 & 1/2 pounds....with 5 servos. Take off on grass is very short...and fellows at flying club took notice when it went vertical. It flies great. See photo attachment. Maybe not so nice looking, but it helped me to cut my teeth on a twin.

Just my .02.

MinnFlyer - you are right. I have a GP Seawind and the wing loading is fairly high - but the plane really lands quite slow with full flaps. I actually was pretty amazed at how slow I could get that plane prior to touchtown without stalling. I've flown it only off water.

Ok, guys, time out here, If wing loading were the only parameter involved with determining flight envelope, then yes this airframe would probably be a hand full. If you really want to get technical one of the more pertinent design elements of the 310 that gives it it's high landing speed is the high aspect ratio of the wing. The model has flaps which help quit a bit to slow the thing down.

The elements that keep the 310 quite well mannered at slow speeds are the tip tanks. They are essentially lifting bodies and also act similar to the now popular winglets. They limit much of the lift loss at the tip and make for very solid low speed handling especially in roll moment. The older "tuna tanks" didn't do nearly as much but were better than nothing.

This model has a wide envelope, on stock 46's it will come out of grass without hesitation clean up and get with the program. It's cruise speed really surprised me, I was thinking more scale (power to weight), but this thing really scoots. It does handle single engine well, the thrust angles built in do a good job making single engine performance very manageable.

Keep in mind that "multi engine trainer" is sort of an oxy-moron. Reciprocating multi engine is as complex as it gets, so I think a more appropriate way to put it would be "multi engine transition". This model isn't the papa stomper it looks like, but it's not a Nexstar either

From a pilot's perspective thank goodness Cessna didn't put round engines on it!!

OK sounds like you have flown the airplane. What is the envelope? How much did the airplane weigh? What was the stall speed? What was the max speed? What prop was used? What was the max RPM?

Bill

Bill and all,

I'll give you the best I can, I don't have a radar gun so speed is by the eye.

All up weight, fully loaded ( retracts, lights, 2000mah Rx, 1400mah on lights, Robart scale tires w/inserts, gear doors, interior pkg, pilot, less fuel: 19.8 lbs

To answer another question also, yes the new 55AX's would work well (same fit and bisson muffler). Watch the speed though, this thing is cleannnn and will surprise you how fast it will go and how quick it gets there!

With the .46's I was running 10x7 apc two blade, plenty all around. With .55's, rather than go to 8 pitch I'd move to 11x6. 8 and 10 pitch is only going to give you more speed (un-needed) you might even be able to run 10x6 three blade, that would look cool and also help slow it down in the landing pattern. Sorry I can't give RPM I don't own a tach, never needed one.

One tip on aproach and landing is keep close attention to speed and get it under control (down) early in the downwind leg ( this pertains to all higher wing loading airplanes when using flaps). If you're too fast on downwind, the first notch of flap will cause the plane to baloon significantly. If your speed is correct (slow), flaps should actually cause the nose to pitch down and set you up on a good desent angle. The transition from "clean" to "dirty" should not change your altitude.

Keep a good desent angle through base and final, then fly the plane onto the runway. Exactly like all full scale aircraft you will want to carry some power all the way to the threshold, then pull off the power and grease it on. This model is really a sweetheart to fly, but it is not a trainer. You won't be able to milk it in on final from two miles out with the power off, unless you're trying to hit the neighbors house.

The 310 is very honest and flys as good as it looks.

GH

Well, this is a great relief to hear. I needs a twin and I don't feel much like building one. I can't seem to get this blasted Visa balance to budge. So, it might be spring before ..............well, before I pay for it, hehe !

I love warbirds, but I keep looking at this ship and it is BEAUTIFUL. Can imagine what it would look like cruising by with two four-bangers singin' away!!!

After looking at the manual, I'm half tempted to use 2-strokes just to keep the lines clean.

A pair of .55AXs would have absolutely no problem with the weight of this plane. If they have the same dimensions as the .46AX then it would be a no-brainer to use them.

Thanks for the info GH, i try to land as I do in the full scale plane, so this sounds typical for me. How about some pictures, or video?!

As much as I want to stash one away, I'll wait and see how they come out of the box and fly on 46's before I spring loose on the hobby budget. In the meantime Ill practice on my Nitro 310 and get used to it! Still tempting!!!
