zeen420 : I haven't seen the hpi baja up close but something tells me that this isn't an HPI.

Ido know there is a copy/ "knockoff" of it out there.

Hope that helps

sorry, i gotta post this, searchin thru ebay and found it....

http://cgi.ebay.ca/BRAND-NEW-23-CC-1-5-SCALE-BAJA-5X-petrol-BUGGY_W0QQitemZ180208446817QQihZ008QQcategoryZ118229QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

does it say hpi anywhere?

It doesn't say HPI anywhere, but it has rip-off written all over it.
That kind of stuff makes me sick. I don't think much of Redcat and other companies like them, but at least they come up with thier own designs instead of stealing already popular cars.

its like no name brand products they buy from the company and resell it, since they buy directly from the companies for full price they can sell them cheaper

We all own Chinese clones of some sort. But this RC and we would not be on this forum if we did not want the best. Case in point I go mountain biking with a friend on occasion. I own two bikes and he owns none so he rides my less expensive bike. It is the kind of mountain bike you buy for $200 at a sporting goods store that says it has an aluminum frame (but with steel forks), has Shimano durailing's (the cheapest they make/license) and even front and back dual shocks. It is like all cheap bikes at sporting goods stores, a cheap Chinese made bike meant to look like a name brand bike to the undiscerning buyer (If your reading this forum you are a discerning buyer). Most mountain bikers know that if you spend under two grand on your bike, do not get dual shocks just get a good front suspension (called Hard Tail bikes). They also know good quality durailings, disk brakes, and well made all aluminum frame and forks when they see them. They will even bounce a bike on it's tires in the bike store to get a feel of it's suspension and weight. These are just mountain bikes we are talking about that don't even have complex electronics and motors; so you figure they would be easier to clone then a RC car. There is no way I or anyone who cares about quality and performance would be satisfied with a "Clone Knockoff" just to save some money. There is nothing about this hobby that "saves you money". You get what you pay for and the quality RC cars are worth every penny. Sheesh did not mean this to read like a political speech. Ummm Vote Ron Paul/The Trucking Guru 2008

I bought my 1st HBX last year for a bash around, had the seller put bearings and an alloy main shaft in, loved it, so I bought a second one for spares, but before I pulled it apart I put a 272w brushless set up in it, FLEW like you would not believe. Spent a lot of time on it's roof with so much power, but everything held together, broke some body mounts, stripped a set of speed tuned gears, but nothing much else, now I have put the brushless in my first truck and have just bought the touring car version and going to put a brushless in it too. Why you ask, because I can and they are so cheap for parts and it's good fun. If I was going to race I would have a look at a top brand product and see if there was value for money if not I would buy another HBX, might do that anyhow. How much do you pay for a brand name? that's up to you, but I wouldn't buy a Benz or similar because you pay too much for the name, did that with a Land Rover Discovery now I own a Kia Sorento 4wd and more than happy.

It's not the name brand that makes it cost more, it's the fact that some of these companies (like HBX) don't have to pay for product design or licensing of thier product (because they just stole it). Granted, it's not the case with every bargain RC company, but you see more and more companies popping up that are making obvious rip-offs of brand name cars. HPI's B5 and it looks like soon the Wheely King will be the victims of another design rip-off.

obviously the car designs are under a copyright.. so the can't really steal it.. They probably sold these places some old designs

Copyrights mean nothing in some countries. Yes, some of the duplicate designs have been licenced out to other companies, but that's not always the case.
