I have a tower hobbies .46 ABC with the muffler and all that good stuff...

I cant seem to get it to start. I filled the fuel tank, turned everything on, and primed the engine by putting my finger over the carb and turn the prop until I saw fuel going into the carb.

I got it to spin up and then it died and I couldn't get it to spin up again. I checked the glow plug and it is glowing bright orange. Im using 10% nitro fuel.

I have 2 guesses, either the needlevalve isn't right or its really flooded...

The instructions say to turn the needle valve all the way clockwise until you feel resistance (im assuming this means close it) No, I dind't do it tightly to damage the valve. Then it said unscrew the valve 3 complete turns and the engine should start and run rich. Thats the first step of the break in process.

I removed the glow plug, let it set for about 5 mins, and retried with the same result. Im using an electric starter just in case that matters. Tearing up the damn spinner trying to get it to work though but I can get another one of those.

I am thinking that your guesses are right! The best way to clear a flooded engine is to remove the glow plug and spin the engine with your electric starter. If it is really flooded, a stream of liquid fuel will come flying out of the plug hole. If very little, or no fuel comes out, then the engine may need more priming. I would think that it would take several flips of the prop, with your finger over the carb and the carb set at full throttle, to properly prime it. (No glow power, of course)

If it is possible for you, I would suggest that you take your plane to the flying field, where there will probably be a couple of guys who can help you.

Good luck!

I agree with Sandy, but would add that you should disconnect the tubing from the engine when you spin it with the plug out. Otherwise, you might just be pulling in more fuel.

Try setting the needle at 2 1/2 turns out. If it starts you can then quickly open the needle 1/2 a turn - being careful to move around to the back of the engine! Never reach around the prop from the front to adjust the needle.

I have found that a lot of my engines, when new, are easier to start the first time when they are a bit on the leaner side. Then, like I said, open the needle (counter-clockwise) once it starts to a rough 2-cycle setting and continue the break in. Sometimes the things just won't start if they're too rich.

Thanks for the suggestions, Ill try again tomorrow. Ill try it at 2.5 turns out from closed and see if that helps. I didn't think about turning the prop with the plug out to see if fuel came out, thats a good tip.

Ill let you know how it goe.s

Zephirus79,

You might also try changing the glow plug. Just because it glows when out of the engine doesn't necessarily mean it will work under compression. If you can't get it to start try changin it and see what happens. Glow plugs should be considered an expendable item.
Good luck.

Zephirus, firstly I assume you are trying to start it on idle position or one tick over the idle.Secondly I think your idle needle is too much in means no fuel allowing to run.I suggest to open idle needle half turn out and retry to run.Be careful, overpriming(no need to flood) means hard start.
