This is no surprise and probably a good idea considering the determination of some to get American blood flowing for the world to see.

My father is Director of Flight Ops for a flying school in Provo, Utah and they had to shut down operations for the entire two weeks of the games. Without pay might I add...

What does everyone think about this?

I think banning R/C flying near the Olympics is a bit much, but when you think of what could be done with one of these small planes in the wrong hands it can put a chill down your back. Take a 1/4 size plane, add extra fuel tanks, a small video camera so one can fly it out of site, 6 Lbs of C-4 with a remote detonator, no radar picture and you have a problem! Now can it be done?? sure and I know just the plane that could handle the extra weight and it's not 1/4 size.

I used to live in SLC 4 years ago. My main field was in a UT State park that was just due east of the SLC international airport.

We were so close that you could see the pilots smile (or other gestures) when the SLC tower would turn them short on take off.

I can understand with the increased air traffic at the airport they would not want to hassle with the RC field and that traffic.

Flying in February in SLC in an adventure anyway. I remember one "cold" day when I started my engine took my glow battery off the motor and promptly dropped the battery (the thick gloves were to blame I'm sure). It went through both layers of monokote on my wing!

If a terrorist decides to use a radio controlled model to launch an attack on the Olympic games, do you think he would honor the ban on flying R/C models and come up with another way to complete his mission? I think not. This is just like most laws in that it only applies to law-abiding citizens, not those intent on breaking the law.

Good point! I know of another law that does about the same thing.

This sounds like a good example of the "law of unintended consequences". If they are afraid of an attack coming from a model R/C field, are they patrolling the fields? I doubt it seriously. It they're not going to patrol, then the best thing to have is a bunch of local modelers at each field so if Mustaffa ben Lying shows up with a terror plane, someone would step on his wing. Or why don't they just put up a sign at all the R/C fields: "No Terrorists Allowed!!!"; it will do just as much good.

We are dealing with wicked, motivated people in this war, and good intentions, doing things to "feel" safe, asking people if the packed their own bags, appearances of security, and sticking to (bad) policies will not stop them.

The reason it's safer to fly airlines today than before 9/11, is not all the airport and airline reg changes; it's safer because the airline crew and passengers will no longer act like sheep if confronted with Saudis with a fingernail file and a cardboard box "bomb"; they'll beat the hell out of them, no matter the costs, then sort it out after they land.

Whoa ... where did that soap box come from?
