Hallo,

take a look here (but take care - these pic`s have to be verified with original pictures, because they are often not correct !!! )

or look here

or here - a german forum on history of Tanks and also Tiger units with a lot of pictures

Greetings

The only tigers seen in grey paint were the first 20+ delivered to the russian front. These didnt have the standard turret bins, side skirts, front mud flaps, exhaust shrouds, or any spare track links on the turret. Very basic tanks. The best reference for these is in Tigers in Combat Vol 1. Alot had Panzer3 or 4 turret bins added to the turret in the field. Youll know them in pictures when you see them. The track guards on the front of the tank had a bend to them and sometimes had a diamond plate tread. Any Tigers delivered to the front from North africa onward came in a base dark yellow and the crew applied their own camo. This is mainly a generalized rule of thumb but it helps.

thanks Leo ... that answered a few things for me as i was wondering about parts that were missing
in some of the foto's i have seen ... eg exhaust shrouds... was this the case with the ones i have seen
without filtration units on the rear ...

No prob. Those first 20+ didnt have the air filters installed either. They were introduced on the common initial production variants and then discontinued later with the mid production version. Alot of crews also found that the filters were a hassel and got damged easily so they were removed. The best(not 100%) way to tell a mid is it will have a late production cupola on the turret but rubber rimmed road wheels. I say not 100% since toward wars end the factories were cobbling together tigers from salvaged tanks. There are documented instances of a late model lower hull being fitted with an early turret.

One other thing. the first batch and some early tigers had "handed" tracks meaning that the tracks were meant to only go on one side of the tank and could not be swapped. Noone that i know of makes handed tracks so check your references.

Actually i stick to Tamiya. Their XF-60 Dark yellow cant be beat. then any dark redbrown and dark olive green. since the redbrown and green were thined from a concentrate paste no 2 vehicles were ever exactly the same.
