bonsaiboy123 -> nikko rc windigo sailboat? (11/20/2006 1:05 AM)

I've seen online, and heard from some of my "peeps" that it is a pretty good starter sailboat(i'm just starting in rc sailboats). I'm wondering if anyof you guys have heard anything about it, or ever used it, and if you have, is it good? thanx!
Peace be the journey.

The Fortune 612 is a better starter and has a better radio for about 140.dollars,Or if you want to scratch build one you could try a Star 45 class Plans are about $18and the web group is loaded with great builders who are very helpful!Star45@yahoo.com

id stay away from that boat and any similar ones they are cheap rubbish.if i were you id build my own there are lots of plans available and they are pretty easy to build if you can build models or have good diy skills.i built this one from scracth and it was my first boat its all balsa planks on ply frames and glass cloth over this for strength.its called the luna rosa heres a link with plans !!i built mine a little smaller at 34 inches long and 44 inch mast measured from the deck she sails wonderfully well and was very inexpensive to make id say half or less of what you would pay for a rtr boat.[image][/image]http://www.velarc.it/eng/plans.htm

Nikko isn't exactly famous for its craftmanship, specially when it comes to boats...

The heavy plastic hull of the Windigo sailboat, the horrible sails and heavy rig makes it a very poor performing boat.

There is only one commercial available boat in this size that has a good performance: the Graupner Micro Magic.
Sadly this boat is way overpriced in the US.
If small is what you want, go for a Footy.

Having said that, for a novice, a bigger boat is a better choice, in my opinion, less twitchy, easier to handle.

The Thunder Tiger Victoria is a good boat and there are large fleets in the US.

If you have a local club, check out what they sail, maybe there's a decent second hand for you.

Regards, Jan.

top tip on the magic its a loveley little boat,i also like the victoria and was considering buying one before i built this one.if your not into building you couldnt do much better than those two as they are both nice boats.there are others too but scratch building your own boat isnt as hard as you might think so if you fancy having a go i say do it!!.the footy is also a great little boat for light winds and to hava go and see if you like sailing!! easyest boat you will ever build also check this one out!!http://home.earthlink.net/~tigerprises/images/RAZOR%20FOOTY%20CONSTRUCTION/
plans available here http://footy.rcsailing.net/plans.php

first what boat are you thinking of building?,most boats are balsa wood planks on ply formers(frames).its pretty easy you cut all the formers first then get a board fasten them to the board then cover in tape and pin the first plank to them and bend round.then the rest are glued to this with thin cyano the first one is normally spruce then you put the keel planks on ,the next ones ar all balsa the keel planks are also spruce.heres a cpl of pics of mine been built and a cpl of links for you.if you download the build instructions for the us one metre boat it gives you all the info you will need.once the boat hull is built you sand it smooth and get some thin glass cloth and glass over it i used 200g cloth and polyester resin but you can use epoxy too .polyester is half the price though.for sails i used rip stop nylon kite material, you can pick it up really cheap on ebay i made flat sails to start with but as you get more adventurous you may want to try making paneled sails with some built in shape(camber).the flat sails work just fine for a first boat though and most rtf boats have flat sails anyway.hope this helps you.[image][/image]http://www.modelyacht.org/us1mcons.html

is that foot e sailboat good?

bonsaiboy123 -> RE: nikko rc windigo sailboat? (11/21/2006 10:27 PM)

what is the thickness of most wood pieces, for the hull of a 17 in. rc sailboat?

martno1fan -> RE: nikko rc windigo sailboat? (11/21/2006 11:04 PM)

use 1/8 thickness balsa for planks normally cut into 1/4 wide planks ,and 1/16ply for the frames1/8 is ok too as they dont stay in the boat they are just to help form the shape.read the instructions and all will become clear.if you look at the luna rosa plans i linked i can send you them in pdf they build a 1 metre boat but i downsized mine a bit.as regards the footy they sail really well in light wind.

The picture is really bad, but the size reminds me of the Aussie II from Thunder Tiger.
If the asking price is met, plus the shipping, you might aswel get a brandnew AussieII kit...
