I too had a issue with the tips of the main wing as the covering was not overlapped. They made me pay for the wing to ship it and I sent my bad one back and then they issued credit.

The right wing tip of the bottom wing was defective on mine. A joint wasn't glued. Sig replaced it right away.

Silver Kiwi...
How much clearance do you have between the rocker arm covers and the cowl with your Saito 100? I've got a great running OS FT-120 twin I'm trying to use but due to the engine being mounted off center to compensate for the right thrust, one rocker arm cover touches the inside of the cowl. I think the heat would distort the fiberglass. I certainly will NOT cut a clearance hole in the cowl. Any ideas?

Hi WacoOne,
I have approximately 1/4 to 3/8 inch clearance between the cowl and the valve covers on my SRE. Heat has not been a factor here however, on another plane of mine (Monocoupe) the intake valve cover just touched the cowl and did very slightly distort the fiberglass. The distortion was as much from vibration as heat, I think. It didn't discolor the cowl but rather just caused a slight bulge that caused the paint to spider web.. In that case, I expoxied a thin piece of cork gasket material to the inside of the cowl and that seemed to work. Of course your rocker covers are different from the Saito and might make an even tighter fit. I'd try it and see if you get any distortion that you can't live with before cutting holes or a different engine. You could also try shimming the right thrust out a little and if the flight is not affected much, go with that. Let us know how you fair.

Personally, I would shim the right side of the engine mount, until the engine fits in the cowl without touching the sides. Then see how the thrust line is.

There's not much right thrust built in to the firewall, but if your rocker cover is only just touching the cowl you should be ok.

It'll still fly ok without any right thrust, you'll just have to work the rudder more, or use a throttle to rudder mix.

Okay, Guys. Thanks for your input. I hadn't considered shimming the right thrust but that may be the answer. With the engine centered on the firewall there is about 1/4" of clearance on each side so I'll work from that angle. The idea of putting gasket material on the inside of the cowl should prevent any distortion. I have some asbestos gasket material that might work well also.

Thanks again for the suggestions and I'll let you know how it works out.

On Wildhare's 100" SU26 there is no side thrust built in to the firewall.
That way you can shim your mount if you want it or not.
It's not nessesary, it just makes the plane a bit more easy to fly.

I've built many a plane from kits and never put side thrust in any of them. If there was ever a problem I didn't see it.

I'm also thinking of fitting a Saito FA-100 in my plan-built SRE.
Only I don't understand how it can fit into the cowling accoriding to the measurements I found on the Internet, from the propshaft to the top of the engine is 106mm.
If I measure the clearance on the front view of my plans, I see that I only have 96mm from the thrustline to the exterior line of the cowling...
I really want to avoid cutting a hole in the cowling, but don't want to have to fit a smaller engine, although I have no idea how heavy this thing is going to get yet.
According to the SIG site, theirs should be around 4.5 Kg, so I'm hoping not to exceed that.

If the space inside your cowl is the same or larger than Sigs, then you'll have plenty of room. Check out the photos of my installation and you can see that the 100T is a prefect fit and has plenty of power to fly the plane nicely.

Thanks!
Yes, the space is more or less the same.
Only problem is the cost of the twin.
My only other worry is that it will provide less power and be heavier than the Saito 100 single cylinder engine.
Food for thought...

Any suggestions for a good 1/6 scale civilian pilot.

I'm going to enter mine in to some scale comps and I neen to have a pilot fitted or I'll lose points.

You can use the Williams Bros. or the Great
Planes busts. There also is a guy selling scale headsets in various sizes on RCU too.

Hi Didg!
The real value of a thread such as this is the archival posts and photos. Case in point is your question regarding 1/6th scale civilian pilot figures for your own Waco. Go back to page 12, posts #279 (from Silver Kiwi) and #281 (from myself) in this thread. These posts directly address this question and offer some reasonable answers for you.

i saw that too. Nice one. I see your 2 seat spacewalker on your avatar... my 1st large scale build was a 1 seat spacewalker in the early 90's... had it until bad crash in 2000 when elevator servo arm broke.. still my favorite giant scale
