Hi Steve -

Sorry about your problem with the clear coat. Although I haven't used Jerry's clear coat, I have his colors and like them. However, I use his foam brush technique as it's easier than spraying and gives me the finish (I think) that is representive of finishes of the full size planes during their era.

If I recall, in his instructions, Jerry mentions the need to fill the fabric's weave when applying paint to over open covered framework surfaces. Since not all fabrics have the same weave, this might one source of the problem, but I can't say as I am 'brushing' mine and it puts on a heavier initial fill coat. However, I would like to suggest that rather than spending time trying to resolve the problem yourself, trying differnt things, etc., that you give Jerry a call and discuss your situation with him. I would think he would be the best person who could help resolve the problem and get you back on track.

p.s. - I've had some problem posting messages past few days; have tried sending this before but don't think it went. So, we'll see what happens this time...

Dick

I agree. A call to Jerry is next on my list. I brushed the clear on the elevator. the bottom came out great. the top looks like cr_p. Both surfaces are painted with the same brand of flat latex, just different colors. Also a couple of the PC10 pieces came out OK.

Thanks for the link Tom. The plane I'm modeling is from the same squadron, but a different flight. The markings are about the same except the radiator, wheels, fin, and subfin are white instead of light blue. If I ever get down your way, I'll have to get some pics.
I talked to Jerry Nelson, and he hasn't heard of this problem before. After some experimentation, I think I've figured it out. When he says thin coats, he means thin coats. If I brush it on almost dry, it works. If I put it on with enough to flow, it draws up. Now all I have to do is figure out how to get a gloss finish while dry brushing.

Stevo.. Here's what you do. After you brush it on go over the plane with an air brush. You will see a little difference in the gloss. Depending on how much you thin the clear wil determing how much gloss you get. The thinner the clear the less gloss. As a reminder.. a pic of mine. As you can see.. mines not overly glossy but has the sheen of the French plane. I suspect your's will be glossier as evidenced in your picture.

Try an experiment FIRST with the air brush !

Well, I'm back from vacation, and back to work. Actually, I took my wing panels and stitching/tapeing tools with me. Hey! It's my vacation and I should get to do something I like doing too! So, anyway, I've finished all the stitching and tapeing. Now it's going to be a bunch of painting, painting, painting.I'll post some pics when I get the wings done.

Hmmm...I can just imagine the looks as I sit in economy during that 12 hour flight back to the US holding my wing panels as I sew the rib stitching.

Maybe the other side has hooks to go into the eyelets. It's a little late to think about this, but I just realized I can't cover the sides until I work this out. Shazabot!

I havent seen any good pictures of the SE5a selt belt either Steve. I do know the French use one when the fly but it seems to be pretty primative. Just a belt that connects around the waiste.

Steve :

I wish I could figure it out because you helped me quite a bit with my machine gun trigger but I dont know anything yet.

That sure is a wide seat belt isnt it but I guess thats because a small one would really dig into you when you were inverted. I guess thats the reason its so big.

By the way, "Nanu-Nanu"

Steve,

I have a pic that showspart of a seat with what looks like two shoulder restraints hanging down over the seat back... but, no seat belt shows. I think you may have this pic on your SE5 'walk around' CD. Unfortunately, though, the pic is not a very good one - is not a full view of the seat and shoulder restraints,etc... just a small portion.

Let me know if you don't find/have it on your CD and I'll email the pic that's on my CD. I'm sure it's not the 1918 version, though .

I know which pic you're talking about. I'm sure it's not original equipment though. I think I'll just do the other half of the belt with a row of hooks. Hooks on one side, eyelets on the other. It's a simple solution and it will hold the pilot in.

Steve,

I agree, it's not 1918 vintage. But, look at the mail/link I just sent to you back channel... This might be of more help.

One more thought/comment. I'll bet they didn't use shoulder restraints back in WW1 - only seat belts.

I'm still painting away. The wing panels are almost finished. I did the cockpit coaming in between coats.

I've got the colors on the wings. I haven't put the Nelsons clear on yet. I want to let them dry for about a week while I cover the rest of the fuse.
