Steve :

You need to simulate a big rip in the side of the covering so you can see that beutiful work in there.

Thanks Tim. Maybe some really big bullet holes would work.
I've got the other side stitched and I'm puting on the lower wing stubs. I'll post some pics when they're on.

I have used those nib type drafting pens with paint. I had to thin the paint quite a bit. And just like in high school drafting class I left big blobs where they didn't belong. Never could ink a drawing; didn't need to by the time I discovered Rapidographs.

I use Rapidograph pens too. I have several different diameters that work well. They are especially nice when outlining lettering that's to be painted in.

I never had any luck with the drafting pens either. Can I assume that the Rapidograph pens are available at a drafting store?
I finished the fuse stitching, today. Also, I attached the wing root sections and made the aluminum fairings. The fairings are made with a heavy aluminum foil I got at Hobby Lobby. It's beginning to look a lot like an airplane

Using a nib in a compass to cut in is really not that hard - my first ever go was on my old Puppetteer using humbrol enamels, and I found it pretty easy actually.

Looking amazing btw Steve.

Cheers,

Cam

Hi Cam. Good to hear from you. Maybe I should try my hand at using a nib again. I was very young the last time and didn't have much patience. Your roundels look great.

I'll dig it out and post a pic tonight. Yes, it has a nib which you dip in the paint and use like a fountain pen - I'll explain the "secret" when I post the pics.

Cheers,

Cam

O.K., couple of pics attatched. As you can see, the compass will do circles to about 200mm diameter - nearly 500mm with extension.

Easy to use, just dip the nib in the paint - unthinned - so there's 5-6mm or so captured, and WIPE EXCESS OFF OUTSIDE OF NIB. Then just practise lines as you slowly wind nib open/closed to get the desired thickness, and you're away. Refill, wipe outside, and go for it!

To do circles on painted fabric, just tape a small piece of thin ply at the rough centre to protect it from the compass point, and mark the centre. Paint the light colours first, eg white in the case of my Pup, and overlap border where darker colours will be. Then use compass/nib to draw borders of darker colours, and fill in by hand with a brush.

I've also used Frisket film and sprayed, more on WWII fighters, but hand-painting seems more "characteristic" on WWI planes. I even used the nib freehand to do the lettering - again to my "sport scale" standards only, but easier than a brush!

If that's still not clear let me know and I'll dig out some photo sequences of the actual process.

Thanks Cam. Your "Sport Scale" lettering looks fantastic. I definitely have to try this method out. I still have to "paint" this little guy twice. He's 2" tall.

I finished the bottom covers today. I still need to make the false hinges, but they won't go on until final assembly. The front cover will be removable as will the one under the pilot's seat.
Also, I made the drain cock for the radiator. The handle is removable, making it functional. It will be used to drain the oil from the catch tank for the crankcase breather.
At last, the fuselage is ready to paint. So I guess I'd better get offline and get busy.

Steve, one question about the stitching. How do you cover up the front and rear end of the stitching. Is this covered up under "edge tapes?" And how do you do the edge tapes?

I ran the stitching out to the leading and trailing edges and cut it off flush. The edge tape covers it. I tried to use a single tape to wrap around the edges, but since the edges change thickness at each rib the result looked scalloped. So I ran a strip along the bottom edge and cut it off flush with the edge. Then I ran another strip along the top and overlapped the bottom about an 1/8". Since the bottom edge is outlined with PC10 the seam dosen't show.
I painted the fuse today. Tomorrow I'll start on the markings. I want to have everything painted before I start with the clear coat. That way I'll have the best chance of getting an even finish overall. Then I can start making it look uneven and weathered

I got a couple of new toys today. A beam compas, extension, and a Rapidograph pen. The compas uses a clamp (very strong) to hold whatever in place. No excuses for sloppy roundels now

Two questions: From where and how much? I'm tempted to pick up one of these myself over the summer. What's the deal with the radiograph pens by the way? Are they just for black or can they be filled with any color (or any paint)?

I got them at an art supply store (Prisim). You should be able to get them at any drafting or art store. Compas $17. Extension $10. Rapidograph pen $17.
The pen has a cartridge that you fill with your medium. They come in different sizes. I didn't get the largest, which was a mistake. Even thinned down to water I can't get it to flow.I'm going to try adding a wetting agent and see if that works. If not I'll get the largest pen and try that.

I finished getting the colors on today. I'll let it dry for a few days and then everything gets a couple of coats of poly.
BTW, if anyone knows how to use the Rapidograph pens, I could use some help. I couldnt get anything thicker than water to flow through. I got the largest they had (size 7) but no luck. So the markings had to be done with a brush.

About all that's left is a couple of coats of varnish and assembly. I still have to make the dummy engine and of course the rigging, but I think it'll be ready for the NATs.
Your wings are looking great. Actually you're ahead of me since you have your rigging done. Now I'm envious
