Wonderful tidy and tight installation. BTW, I'm almost releave to see that you've made at least ONE concession to practicality with the muffler! Like the Moslem weavers who make a "purposeful error" just acknowledge that only God is perfect.

I've never seen anyone use the little oil take up tank but that makes perfect sense in a scale model with fully enclosed engine. I'll need to remember than.

BTW, it that one of the Laser engines? Which one?

Amen to not being perfect! I am going to try something a little less crude on this one
The engine is the RCV.91CD. I really am pleased with it. Starts easily, good power, and sounds good.
Any advice on the servo location?
Steve

All I can recommend on the servo placement is to be sure to "think 3-D." You might need to really be creative in the stacking and alignment of off the servos in the limited space available in WWI models.

Ah the RCV engines -- I know it was one of the "off beat" brands!

Don, funny you should mention "thinking 3D". I've been looking for a safe place to hang my planes. The stairwell to the basement is 2 stories tall! What wasted space! the planes are hung with a keyring over a hook on the wall. I reach them with a painters extension pole with a hook on the end.
Steve
PS My wife suggested I paint it sky blue with white clouds. (Glad I'm not the only nut in the family)

Steve, great little "Staffel" you have there!

I find I can't stop thinking about the RCV 91CD. Is this engine rated the same as other 90-class 4Ss? What is the wingspan and weight projection for your model? I'm still looking around for a power plant for my Snipe. I had been thinking about a Saito 56 but I wouldn't mind the extra power, if it came is the same size case, of a 70, 80, or even 90 class engline.

The wing span is 53 1/4 inches, with a 10" cord. So, taking out 4" from the bottom wing, I've got 7sq.ft. The Top Flite weighs just under 8 lbs. I expect this plane will be around 9-10 lbs. At 10lbs It will have about 22 oz/sq ft.
I started out with a Saito 56. The Top Flite called for 40-60 size 2 stroke. At best the 56 would match a 45. I was urged to go larger. The RCV .91CD is shorter than my Saito. Also the plane balanced without any extra weights. It cruises at about 1/2 throtle. At the lower RPM it sounds great. Check out rcv.com. They have all the drawings and specs.

AND they have a distributor in Japan!

But it looks like the RCV91CD is a bit longer than the Saito 56 (in fact it looks longer than the Saito 82) so that might be a problem in short nosed models -- like the Snipe. I've download and resized the tech drawings and "creatively consider" whether it's a possibility. Looking at the models on the RCV58CD page makes me thing that wouldn't be as much power as I'd like (and maybe less than the Saito 56).

I see what you mean. The SE5a has plenty of length, so my only concern was head height. Maybe you should just buy a radial and be done with it. It's only money. lol

I'm certainly not an expert on engines. I do know that it takes more power for a CL plane than an RC. A lot of energy is lost by pulling it around the circle. Your Saito .82 is probably plenty of power. I need more. I expect to loop it.
I made the bulkhead for the isolation mount and have it fitted in place. positioning is critical, because of the small amount of clearance around the thrust washer. I already had to hog out the opening some, just to get it in.

Steve, if you should have heating problems with your engine (I did) add some ducting on either side of the cylinder to force the air to flow past the fins. You may not as your engine compartment is a bit smaller than mine was. You just want the radiator air flowing close to the fins. I really like your work.. you should be making it a larger RC version!

Hi Bob.I definitely see a 1/4 or 1/3 scale RC in my future . So many little gadgets I want to make work!
I 'm putting false sides next to the engine so that the dummy engine is inset. Also I put a slanted baffle behind the engine to direct air flow down to the scale baffle. It worked fine on the Top Flite. I don't remember if your muffler was inside the cowl? That would make a big difference in cooling.
BTW, I love your wicker seat! It's all those !QUOT!small!QUOT! details that add up to a great plane. And when it comes to details, you rock!!

Steve, if possible you might move the baffles closer to the fins. For cooling, the closer the better.
Thanks for the compliment. I think you're getting all the details down just right.
Maybe next year (Sept) you can make it to the Dawn Patrol in Dayton. I plan on being there.

It's kind of a catch 22. The further I move the sides in, the less air gets in from the radiator. Actually, I moved them in about a 1/4!QUOT! each. to allow more detail on the dummy engine. This setup worked fine on the test plane. I can always add some plywood to restrict the air path if needed later. Let me know about the dawn patrol. I'd love to be there.

I undersand. I had the same issue. What I did was to taper the baffles from the radiators towards the fins.. plus you have the opening in the front. Don't forget about that.

Well, Gents. I've reached an impasse. I started out to make this plane both CL and RC. It worked fine on the test plane, But with the full cockpit, there just isn't enough room So, this bird will be CL. It's the right size, and my RC pilot skills aren't up to flying this plane. When I finish this one, I'll build a 1/4 or 1/3 scale for RC. By then I'm sure I'll be able to fly it . I'll leave it up to you guys as to my continuing this thread. It is RC scale, and I don't want to be out of line. I'll still post in the control line section, either way.

My 2c - I'd like you to keep posting here if noone else objects. Still mostly relevant to what we all do.

Going bigger certainly helps with R/C - I can get both hands inside the latest (1/4 scale) build

Whatever you decide re posts, at least sneak the occasional progress report across.

Cheers,

Cam

Thanks, Cam. I'm, with you. Building is building. The flying is different, but I enjoy both CL and RC. Hopefuly this plane will raise the bar for the other CL guys. I get tired of you RC guys having all the Pretty planes

To me it's the SCALE forum and I don't think much about the RC part. I just honestly never imagine there was any alternative way of FLYING a scale model. BTW, my own RC piloting skills are still pretty minimal.

So by all means continue to post here. This is where you'll find the most people who share your interests. Is there a healthy contingent of CL flyers who build scale aircraft? If so, get them to come over here and show us what they've got!
