Accident occurred : Sunday, January 19, 2003 at ST. THOMAS, VI
Aircraft : US Aircore F-16
Engine : SuperTigre .45
Pilot: "Jack"
Injuries: 3 minor.

This is preliminary information, subject to change, and may contain errors. Any errors in this report will be corrected when the final report has been completed.

On January 19, at approximately 1220 Atlantic standard time, a US Aircore F-16 nonregistered homebuilt airplane, was damaged following impact with terrain in St. Thomas, VI. The private pilot was not injured. The owner/pilot was operating the airplane under Title 14 CFR Part 103. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the personal flight that originated from Simón Pierre Field approximately 5 minutes before the accident. No flight plan had been filed.

During its takeoff it was observed that the aircraft bounced off the nose gear several times before breaking the ground. The pilot reported that the plane was extremely nose-heavy and required full throttle and significant 'up' elevator pressure in order to maintain level flight. After several minutes of flying the engine flamed out. The pilot declared mayday to Simón Pierre TWR and entered a shallow turning dive which terminated upon impact with a newly cleared area N of the main runway. Damage was minor - two broken clevises and a broken servo arm.

Addendum: The pilot reported that the engine had been changed and that the new engine weighed more than the old one. The pilot also reported that after the engine flameout he inadvertently switched the elevator to its less-sensitive setting; his intent was to desensitize the ailerons.

The St. Thomas R/C Association Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident as follows:

ENGINE..BAD GLOW PLUG
ELEVATOR AUTHORITY..NOT ENOUGH "UP" TRAVEL
BALANCE..STOCK SUPERTIGRE MUFFLERS ARE *HEAVY*
