I'm surprised Slimline doesn't already make a muffler for the Saito 220. I would think any mufflers for the Saito 220 would fit the FG-36.

A 20X8 would be around a 40cc gas size....
It sure seems like it would work in the aeromaster...???
Meesh, you get the sato 325 radial in it yet?

Kochj,

I'm just now getting my basement straightened out from the move. I have a RV4 and a Cessna 310 to finish then I'll move on to new assemblies.

All this suspense is killing me!! I'm getting one. The figure with the bolly 20x8 is impressive. However, needs a 20:1 mix so a separate fuel jug for the engine. Thats inconvenient and needs to be marked from the rest.Don't want flying conrods.

Whoops! where did you get that 20:1 mix info?

20:1 is the break-in ratio. After that 30:1.

Guys,

I still have to chuckle. I ran a Saito 1.5 on gas 3 years ago. I flew that engine on gas with a 16:1 mix for an entire summer. It ain't like it's rocket science. I don't know what the new gas Saito has to offer above the glow version, other than the ignition module. Be interesting to see.

With the ignition and walbro carb comes the ability to reliably run gasoline in it. The reason I see for going this route is the skyrocketing cost of glow fuel. (It has gone up 25% around here in the last couple of weeks.) The cost of the gasoline and oil to make the mix is significantly less and on top of that the engine burns less than half as much per a certain amount of run time. The power loss is there (over glow) but it's not horible. Something on the order of 10% and that is easily made up by running a slightly larger engine than one originally intended. The fuel is available at the corner store instead of having to drive to the LHS. I for one am liking this gasoline push.

The operative word above is "reliably." If there wasn't a "gas" carb on it, no one would buy the thing! Funny. I ran gas in my 1.50 with a CH ignition using the alky carb that came with it. The Walbro carb is seen as needed, but the alky carb will work with gas because of the fine threads on the HS needle. Turn it in about 1/2 turn and it leans out OK. The idle mixture isn't critical because you have a spark to fire it.

Now, don't get me wrong, I think the gas engine is a step forward for Saito 4-strokes. It sure is a kick in the pants for the "experts" who claim that you have to have a needle-bearing rod in order to run gas. I am surprised by the gas oil mix they spec. But it's a welcome surprise.

Looks like Horizon has the fg36 on backorder.Must be selling well.Question- why can't you use a normal rc carb for gas? Is it because of the fire hazard or that fuel draw is a problem or you can't get the right air to fuel mixture? And I find all gas motors use only walbro like its the only carb to use.
Why can't manufacturers produce their own carb specifically for rc use ,make them smaller and have a decent throttle arm.

Charley,
Yep, I've got a Saito 91 running on gas/spark and I too am using the glow carb. It's not absolutely perfect but it is certainly useable. I have often thought of making an adapter and trying a Zama or Walbro on it but it just doesn't seem worth the effort as good as it runs. Heck I'm using the alky carb on my ST51 running gas/spark and even it runs fine.

togatoga,
I haven't found any problems with running the stock glow carbs on gasoline except they are a little bit too sensitive on the high speed needle adjustment. For someone who doesn't mind working a bit to get the needles just right it works great. I have the Saito 91 on spark/gasoline and a SuperTigre 51 running the same. I am fixing to convert my SuperTigre 90 to gas as well. It's in a 60 size SuperSportster so it has plenty of power. It also has a tuned pipe so any power loss will not matter. One thing I love about these little conversions is they use very little fuel compared to when they were on alky/nitro. Also, way less mess.
