her goes!!

i have in my shop a brand new fully composite kmp beaver float plane it has a 95" ws and weighs 19-20# projected weight i have been on the fence for quite sometime on this engine.... i have about $1000 in to just the (bare) airframe and want to make sure i do this project right from the start!!! any incite as to if this engine may be a good candidate for this application

many have flown this plane with g-26 however it is a little too scale for me!!!

any advice would be appreciated

Brad!

My exprerience with piper cubs and floats, is that the most power that you can shoehorn in the airframe, the better off you will be!....

Floats on planes add lots of weight. I do lots of Winter flying with mine and wish I had a gas engine in the airframe because of the fits a Glow engine can give you....
But the added weight of a gas engine in this plane may be too much....

Get gas, and go for the bigger engine.... If not the saito, Look at the ZDZ 40 F3A.... Same weight at the 26cc evolution gas engine with double power....

I have so many planes right now I not sure where to start.

If I do get this engine, I will stop looking at it as a Conversion Glow 220 and see it as it is..... A 30cc gas 4-stroke engine....

That is my take on the matter.... Will I get burned? not sure,, Time will tell..

I always find personall experience to be the best lesson....

Justin

thanks for the advice! i do agree with you on power requirements for float planes! they do need a bit more power!!!! that is why i posted this just trying to do a little homework before i shell out a bunch of bills!

i fly mostly seaplanes and have both 1/3 scale balsa usa cub and super cub, both on floats
a balsa usa citabria pro on floats, 1/4 scale rv-4 on floats 3 small cubs 40 and 60 size, and a seawind

but this plane (the kmp beaver) is really making me think about the engine set-up more than the others because 1. its heavy 2. its not that big..

the engine choices for my 33% cubs were easy!!! the j-3 got a 3w85i cs twin!, and the super cub got a 3w 56 cs twin(it fits the cowl)

but this beaver is driving me crazy! i want to give it something special!

Brad

Brad,
You have some really nice planes.....
Much more water experience than I do!!!!

I alsmost picked up the Lanier Husky 106" and get there floats as well being that they well selling out there stock for a very good, reduced price....

Unfortianatly, the floats where all sold out by the time that I was about to get it...

I think that there are some very scale floats out there, that are much better scale looking than the Lanier are anyway..... So perhaps it was a good thing....

I think that there are some really nice planes and floats that look much more scale, and are of better quality and about the same price..... like you KMP beaver!....

What thype of floats are on you 1/3rd Cub in the pict?
Sea-Comander????

Justin

the floats on my 1/3 scale cubs are from balsa usa they are made of wood and glassed! the floats are fully scaled out and enclude every rivet that the full size floats have!!! they are about 60" long

as for this saito how would you describe it in terms of power to a saito 180 little more lots more? the beaver will fly with a 180 ... and a g-26 how does the fg-36g compare to these engines?

i also fly full scale cub here are a few pics!

I don't have the 220 glow or the saito gas....
I have seen it run in a couple of videos.....
Seems to go quite well with a 20X8..

Perhaps someone with the engine can chime in on the performance???

Justin

Mines installed and ready to test in the H9 1.50 Mustang. Pretty involved firewall mod, but overall not too bad. Break in testing this weekend if it doesn't rain.

I got mine today from Chief. There is a small plug threaded into the muffler, looks like the perfect place to thread a nipple for smoke oil, or is that what its for?

Thought about that too. Maybe later, since the 51 is already pretty heavy now. The Saito added some weight that the Evo 26GT in it previously didn't have.

the muffler has the hole because it is a carry over from the saito fa-220 that muffler previously had a pressure nipple in it to pressurize the tank..the fg-36 gasser utilizes a walbro carb those have a pump that draws the fuel into the carb ..thus not needing the pressure nipple so to keep your cowl clean they plunged the hole with a screw ...this is also done on o.s. engines that utilize a factory pump...

By looking at the performance and price numbers, it seems ZDZ 40 F3A can do better. Do not want to start a name-brand war here. But the matter of fact is that ZDZ one can spin 21x8 prop at 6800.
