Followed the link. Other than an interesting picture, couldn't get any more info. Is it 1.00 cubic inch?

1.90 cubic inches is 30cc. This engine is 2.20 cubic inches, so it is larger than 30cc.

rlmcnii -> RE: GAS Saito (11/27/2006 5:31:41 PM)

2.2 cubic inches are approximately 36 cubic centimeters

Charley -> RE: GAS Saito (11/27/2006 6:52:17 PM)

I didn't notice that the OP said 36cc, I just twigged on the SAFG36. duh.

Anyone seen this engine other than on the above posted site? Got a link to Saito Japan?

Geistware -> RE: GAS Saito (11/27/2006 7:17:11 PM)

I looked the site over and it is funny how the Menz propellers are listed in inches.

rlmcnii -> RE: GAS Saito (11/28/2006 12:10:46 AM)

Neither did I. Me DUH too! At least we all now know that 2.20 = 36!!!!

Tsutomu Mabuchi -> RE: GAS Saito (11/28/2006 3:24:50 PM)

Saito FG-36 is a 36cc ,modefied FA-220, gas engine which will be released next year.
3HP, 1260g without muffler and ignition.

Thanks for the info. Any Idea when during next year?

Funny thing is that I ran a Saito 1.5, w/CH ignition and a cylinder shim, on 90 octane pump gas, with a 16:1 gas to oil mixture, five years or so ago. Thanks to the fine thread high speed needle, I was able to use the stock carb. I flew it in a Ace 4-120 bipe for a few months.
It's still in the bipe but running on glow without the shim now.

Tsutomu Mabuchi -> RE: GAS Saito (11/28/2006 10:59:40 PM)

I called Saito asking when they release the engine, but they didn't answer.
The magazine in Japan reports that the developping is in a final process so
I would think it will be released soon next year.
They say it has a drum rotary type Walbro carb to get smoother transition.

rajul -> RE: GAS Saito (11/28/2006 11:20:31 PM)

What is the equivalent 2C gas engine capacity, in terms of hp, to this 36cc 4C gasser? Any idea?

I see one in my future if it sells for around $750 or less. Fat chance of that happening.

OS 120AX outputs 3.1HP so it would produce a bit less power than 20cc 2 stroke.

The street price could be less.

Richard L. -> RE: GAS Saito (11/29/2006 6:18:39 PM)

I think it will end up around $700. It's basically a Saito FA-220 + Walbro carb + electronic ignition. I'm hoping for $600.

Unless they decided to go with a needle-bearing con rod. Horizon's latest catalogue price for the FA-220a is $500.

The report says they took a phosphorus bronze bush in a con-rod
big end to enhance it's durability.
I'm not sure about a needle bearing on it.

Ed Vollmer -> RE: GAS Saito (11/30/2006 5:15:45 PM)

I converted my Saito 220 to electronically timed spark ignition last Summer. That was after it had knocked my "man-sized" starter stick from my hand several times when running on glow ignition. Now it is a very docile engine - easy starting, low and reliable idle.

It would not be difficult to install a Walbro carb to the existing intake carb mount using a machined adapter. However, one would need to install needle bearings to the conrod in order to run gasoline (or run a very heavy mix of oil). Heat generation would also be a concern when running gasoline.

The engine is currently residing in my GP Yak 54 which makes a good combination running YS 20/20 fuel. To me, the lower fuel cost of gasoline would not justify the reduction in power over the glow fuel - but that's just me.

I won't buy it without needle bearings, or some other equal, in place. But I do not think that we have to worry about it.

YS 20/20 glow fuel in a 36cc engine? Man, you must be made of money! I sure wouldn't want to pay your fuel bills.

Actually, the 16:1 gas/oil mix I used is less oil than is contained in the 20/20 you're using.

I converted my Saito 1.5 to ignition for the same reason that you converted your 220. Small world.

Marcol -> RE: GAS Saito (12/9/2006 8:56:14 PM)

Guys ,
If you want a gas 4 stroke now, no need to wait, get one of these http://www.moki.co.uk/50-4S.htm

I have one and they are wonderful . The realistic sound of a 4 stroke with gas reliability.

Richard L. -> RE: GAS Saito (12/9/2006 9:15:20 PM)

That Mackay 50cc gas 4-stroke looks very similar to the RCS 50VT being sold in the states: http://www.rcshowcase.com/html/RCS/rcs50vt.html

Marcol -> RE: GAS Saito (12/10/2006 3:40:56 PM)

Yes Richard they are one and the same.
They are not the most powerful engine in the world ( About the same as a 40cc 2 stroke) , but for the right aircraft they are wonderful

Richard L. -> RE: GAS Saito (12/10/2006 3:48:27 PM)

Yes, they are wonderful, but I don't think I like the open rocker design. One nose over and the rockers will be full of grass and dirt.
