Funny thing is that I ran a Saito 1.5, w/CH ignition and a cylinder shim, on 90 octane pump gas, with a 16:1 gas to oil mixture, five years or so ago. Thanks to the fine thread high speed needle, I was able to use the stock carb. I flew it in a Ace 4-120 bipe for a few months.
It's still in the bipe but running on glow without the shim now.

RE: GAS Saito
I called Saito asking when they release the engine, but they didn't answer.
The magazine in Japan reports that the developping is in a final process so
I would think it will be released soon next year.
They say it has a drum rotary type Walbro carb to get smoother transition.

I see one in my future if it sells for around $750 or less. Fat chance of that happening.

What is the equivalent 2C gas engine capacity, in terms of hp, to this 36cc 4C gasser? Any idea?

I think it will end up around $700. It's basically a Saito FA-220 + Walbro carb + electronic ignition. I'm hoping for $600.

Unless they decided to go with a needle-bearing con rod.

The report says they took a phosphorus bronze bush in a con-rod
big end to enhance it's durability.
I'm not sure about a needle bearing on it.

RE: GAS Saito
I converted my Saito 220 to electronically timed spark ignition last Summer. That was after it had knocked my "man-sized" starter stick from my hand several times when running on glow ignition. Now it is a very docile engine - easy starting, low and reliable idle.
It would not be difficult to install a Walbro carb to the existing intake carb mount using a machined adapter. However, one would need to install needle bearings to the conrod in order to run gasoline (or run a very heavy mix of oil). Heat generation would also be a concern when running gasoline.
The engine is currently residing in my GP Yak 54 which makes a good combination running YS 20/20 fuel. To me, the lower fuel cost of gasoline would not justify the reduction in power over the glow fuel - but that's just me.

Unless they decided to go with a needle-bearing con rod. Horizon's latest catalogue price for the FA-220a is $500.

I won't buy it without needle bearings, or some other equal, in place. But I do not think that we have to worry about it.

RE: GAS Saito
YS 20/20 glow fuel in a 36cc engine? Man, you must be made of money! I sure wouldn't want to pay your fuel bills.
Actually, the 16:1 gas/oil mix I used is less oil than is contained in the 20/20 you're using.
I converted my Saito 1.5 to ignition for the same reason that you converted your 220. Small world.

Guys ,
If you want a gas 4 stroke now, no need to wait, get one of these http://www.moki.co.uk/50-4S.htm
I have one and they are wonderful . The realistic sound of a 4 stroke with gas reliability.

Yes Richard they are one and the same.
They are not the most powerful engine in the world ( About the same as a 40cc 2 stroke) , but for the right aircraft they are wonderful
