Thanks for the link. However, I've already been doing my 'homework' and have seen those pages. I was told by a friend who owns one (not in the same country as me, so I've not sailed one or seen one in person) that the lighter you can build them, the better so that they plane more easily. He also said a new version is coming out very soon in Europe that will have a carbon fiber rig, different keel bulb shape and some other upgrades. Unfortunately that version will probably take awhile to get here to the states!

Andy

The Standard Bat pack is actually 4.8v but most retrofit 6v packs to give the servos a little boost.

The important factor is keeping the rig weight down as low as you can.
The standard sails use spinnaker cloth and as the silicon coating is not as good as it could be the sails will start absorbing water after a while increasing the weight which is why many people make their own sails.
Which to be honest is really simple as they are generally flat cut.

We are not 100% sure about the ballast as we are getting mixed messages from Germany and the other changes are not performance related just system upgrades and cosmetic.
see Hair Dyers comments who designed the MkI and MkII

i can only quote the kit ive seen on that site and the rtr version deff has a 6 volt pack for the boat!!.sails are easy to make get some ripstop kite material off ebay i got a 4 mtr roll for just £3 arround $5 .you can either just cut them flat as said or if you want to have a go at making some paneled sails they arent hard to do and i use double sided tape to make my sails.yes the stuff any stationer sells.its never come undone in a year even in rain.ive not seen that they are upgrading the actuall boat at all for the race version in fact i think the jury is still out as to wether its worth the extra money .like said most just upgrade the current one(new sails) .scratch that lol it doesnt say what battery it has in the kit but when you click batterys it shows the 6 volt pack .obviously 6 volts are better than 4.8 though .

Those were refreshingly candid comments from Hair Dryer and I suppose it's fairly normal for manufacturers to minimise costs wherever possible from the prototype. After all, Graupner could have had little idea of how popular the MM was to become and that buyers would be much concerned over a 1 oz weight difference.
The choice of sail cloth in hindsight could have been better. If you want 36 micron (50g/m^2) mylar in the UK, there's https://www2.preservationequipment.co.uk/_865D4704F4C84A008902CA7FA8D2F1FD/polyestermelinexmylar/index.cfm?fuseaction=products.detail&pid=4804&redir=1
They only list 50m rolls, which would be more than enough for the entire UK fleet but they do invite enquiries for smaller amounts.
I got mine, and the double-sided tape, from one of the plethora of Chinese shops. It's sold as gift wrap "paper", and it can be bought metallised , with pretty elephants and bows or fairies , more or less transparent and occasionally more or less plain coloured for about 50p or US$ 1.00 for a square metre which made 1 set for my Saphir. In fact my 2 boats whose photos are on your MYA forum with orange and green and transparent sails are made with a mixture of the latter two. Just one warning: the cut edges are easy to tear so either cut them and make holes for attachment with a pointed soldering iron or reinforce the edges with a strip of sellotape (that's Scotch tape to Americans). The orange set have finally got a slight tear from trying to sail in a force 8.
Also on the coloured material, the tape should only be applied to the gloosy (non-printed) side, as the printing can easily separate from the film.
The instructions for making the panelled sails were found on the NED MM site.
