The servo opening size: 23.5mm X 13mm. A nice feature is the slots for the servo screws, so you can fit many different servo tabs with a center hole...

Step 11... The last bag of parts...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The hardware for installing the servos is in the last bag "Parts F-D", The Dragonus kit includes ball links for all the servos as well as mounting screws and plastic "T" nuts, similar to a rexxy se servo mounting hardware... I need to spend a little time doing the out of heli radio setup, basically cantering the servo horns at the correct orientation according to the detailed drawing in the manual. After that, I'll mount the servos in the airframe...

The front servo mount...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The front servo mount on the Dragonus SA is simply wonderful, one of the best setups I've seen... And here's why... Notice the slots in the Front Servo Mount for the mounting screws... In the manual they provide a length of 11-12 mm out from the center of the servo output shaft as the distance you should mount your linkages... The arms on the servos Im using have a hole at 11mm, with the slot for mounting I can be sure I'll be able to align the linkages as close to 90 degrees as possible, any(every) other mount I've seen locks you into using a "centered" hole on the mounts... Unless you do a modification to the servo tab or mount... This is a first for me (I've never seen a setup like this), and I like it ALOT...

Mounting the tail servo...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the manual it shows mounting the tail servo on the outside of the Upper Frame Side, I like to be different and I like clean lines and things tucked in tight to the frame if possible... There's another small issue if I want to use the servos I have for the kit. I hate butchering anything, servos specially. No buthering of any parts if I can avoid it. There's a component that's incorrect if you need to butcher something to make it fit, that's my opinion. Or something is not put together correctly. In this case I do not want to butcher the servo mounting tabs... These have gussets on the tabs and they provide extra strength BIG TIME, These servos also mount like larger servos with grommets and the small brass eyelet inserts...

I also found that I can slip the servo in from between the Frame Sides to avoid doing any butchering of the servos...

This looks good, as long a I mount the link ball on the inside of the servo arm and there's enough clearance to the output shaft as it goes to full travel. I should have near perfect alignment of the linkage too...

The Elevator Servo...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It looks like a lot of the pilots out there will be using some different servos... I want to add that I'm just showing that there are some mounting options to get the alignment you need, I did not have to dis-assemble anything to get the servos into these locations... As long as I have good linkage alignment I will run it setup like this... looks much cleaner down the sides too...

I'm going to mount the Elevator Servo on the inside as well to avoid modifying my servos... It fits in between the swashplate and the Gyro Basemount easily...installing the screws wtiht the servos like this may be another story...

A sweet thing about the Dragonus II is the motor mounting allows for almost limitless motor/pinion combinations as the mounting area is one of the largest I've seen on a mini, another benefit of this is increased airflow around the motor which should equate to better cooling...

The space for the motor between the Frame Sides is 38mm wide X 40mm tall(approx height, hard to get the caliper in there). The motor hangs "upside down" below the mid frame level not "standing" above it...I think the motor mount screw slots should be long enough to accept most motor & pinion combinations and could be elongated a little easily enough if need be.

Jeti Spin 33 it is...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well I ordered up my JETI Spin 33 from www.mscompositusa.com... Sorry about the delay but I want to build MY t-rex KILLER correctly... Next I need to hunt up some good servos, specially for the tail... I'll give a little bit more information about the programming features of the JETI BOX, cause I need to learn how to use it's many features too. Coming up...

As promised...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I need to learn to prpogram my JETI Spin ESC and I thought I'd take a look at the instruction manual for the JETI Box Programmer... WOW, there are so many programamble features... and Get this: It appears it can be used as a "Data Logger" too... Very Kewl...(I don't think my micros could lift it in the air...I'd bet the minis can!) Here's a list of the programable features as shown in the manual, It has four or five main menu selections which take you to individual sub-menus... From there it's almost overwhelming the amount of features it has...Looks like the programmer is THE best way to get the most of out of the JETI SPIN line of ESCs as the options from the Jeti box are much more extensive than the options for stick programming the same ESC...

Here's the menus:

Controller Type--->Basic Data

Measure or Setting ---> Measure---> Man Setting---> Auto Set --->

Measure---> Max temperature, Min Temperature, Actual Temperature, Max Current, Min Current, Max Voltage, Min Voltage, Actual Voltage, Off Voltage, Motor Run TIme, Power On Time, Motor Pole Number, Gear, Max Motor RPM, Max Prop RPM, Errors.

Man Setting---> Temperature Protection, Brake--> Addl Brake Settings, Operation Mode-->Addl. Mode Settings, Timing, Frequency, Acceleration, Accumulator Type--> Addl. Settings, Number Of Cells Lilo/po/Auto, Lilo/po/ Cut Off Volt Per Cell, Off Voltage Set, Cut Off, Initial Point Auto--> Addl. Settings, End Point, Auto Inc. End Point ON From-->Auto Increment End Point OFF, Throttle Curve, Rotation, Timing Monitor.

Auto Set---> Acro Inrunner, Acro Outrunner, Glider Inrunner, Heli Constant RPM, Heli Constant RPM 3D.

As you can see the programming features are very extensive with the JETI BOX and JETI SPIN line of ESCs...

I hope you find this info usefull... Ken

The Tail Servo mounted...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've mounted my tail servo and I've done it a little different than the manual specifies, mainly to avoid modifying my servos mounting tabs...as long as the linkages clear at full travel and I can get good alignment, I will run it like this, it also tucks things in nice and clean along the sides... It was however a PITA to install the screws doing it this way... So unless you have to don't... I just hope it's worth it in the end...

Here's a couple pics...

Here's some of the last bits of hardware to install on the Dragonus SA Available at www.Flying-Hobby.com I want to mention that these are some of the nicest machined link balls I've seen in any kit at any price...I need to order some spares...

I was on the Flying-Hobby web site earlier today and noticed they have some "Combo" packages featuring the Dragonus SA available right now!!! Nice... Get everything fit to this bird in one package...and a discount on the deal too...

anyhoo here's a pic of the link balls and fasteners for mounting them on the servo arms...

Preping the motor for installation...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I need to prepare the motor for installation in the airframe... Before I do this I want to have an idea of where Im mounting the ESC. The reason is because the are four holes to mount the motor and depending on which mounting holes you use the wires exiting the motor will be facing either front or rear on the heli... If i know ahead of time where my ESC is going to be placed I can plan which holes I'm going to use to get the wires headed in the direction I want... Additionally I need to solder on the bullet connectors to the motor leads. I will wait to do this until I have my new JETI SPIN 33 ESC, I know the JETIs usually come with very nice gold plated bullets and I want to use those... should be here tommorow...And finally I need to install the pinion gear on the motor shaft... Only thing I do different than some builders is I make a small flat on round motor shafts when using a set scew type pinion gear... I make a mark through the set screw hole when the pinion is on the shaft with the motor installed and the pinion gear properly aligned for full coverage of the spur gear...

Motor Mounting hole spacing...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you look at most of the Outrunner motors, they have two different hole patterns on the mountig surface... See pic...

In this installation I want to use the holes which are 16mm apart center to center, These holes are the ones that align with the slots in the Motor Basemount also this will put the motor leads at an angle out the front/right or rear/left of the frame... Now is when I need to decide where I am mounting my ESC and determine the length of the motor and ESC leads so I can solder the bullet connectors on them...

My JETI SPIN 33 ESC arrived in one piece thanks to the Postal Service... Now I can continue the build, AND MAN AM I GLAD I waited to get the ESC, the leads on the SPIN 33 are WAY shorter than the ones on my SPIN11s... I almost used the SPIN11 leads to do the measuring and I'm am sure glad I waited for the actual ESC to arrive... One thing I was surprised at is the size of the JETI SPIN33. It is not much bigger than the Spin11. My E-Flite Pro 25 is much larger than the JETI 11 or 33... Now is another time I wish I had a scale to weigh things... Another feature on the 33 is the addition of a power switch...

I'll have to do a little engineering to mount the power switch nice and neat...

Soldering the bullet connectors...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First thing to do is plug in your soldering iron and let it get good and hot...make sure you have all your tools ready, here's a pic of mine...

The sponge is slightly damp and is used to clean the soldering iron tip... The helping hands I have fitted with a heatsink type clamp. I use this to hold the bullet connectors while soldering... A good pair of wire cutters and a good wire stripper...

Time to solder...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My soldering Iron is good and hot, got my parts laid out and ready to work, I'll start with the ESC connectors... I have a method to doing conectors like this, it's just logic, POWER SOURCE is Female always. ESC on the battery side is the Device so it gets a MALE plug end. And on the Motor side the ESC is the SOURCE so it gets female. A battery is source and gets female always. On micro 2 R deans the female side is the battery positve... On the large deans I Put the ground on the vertical bar... I don't remember if its specified on the package... With bullets it either male or female... I need to solder three female bullets on the leads of the esc...

Small Problem...tiny solution...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok, I'm a micro-heli person in a big way... Only two minis... I kinda had this problem before; soldering these larger bullet connectors... I had a difficult time because the tip on my soldering iron is only a 1/8". This tip is good for fine soldering and some electronics stuff...

I have lots of tools for lots of trades... I also have a "thing" about anything miniature, Specially tools and mechanical devices... Here's a little gem I have in my arsenal of small tools, it's a jewelers torch, it's actually capable of cutting steel... I use it for some other specialty work I do... I had a problem using the small tip soldering iron I own, so I got out the tiny guns...

Why did I not think of using this BEFORE!!! It did a wonderful job on the "cup" shaped bullet connectors... It can produce an extremely hot flame only a 1/16 of a inch long... It's for doing very precise work... I'll have to use it for this stuff more often...

Next the heat shrink...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"HUH??? ... yeah right he needs to tell us about heat shrink..." No really, I use a special heat shrink with a melt liner...it seals and seriously protects the connector... You absolutely need to use a heat gun with this stuff... It has another great benefit, the stuff I buy shrinks to 1/3 original size...

I thought I'd show just how I did this using my "little torch"...

Flame on... Gotta have the fires burning...

Next gotta heat the bullet conector and melt the solder... Also add enough to fill the small "cup"...
