Quinton:

Thereb is no one "Right" set. So long as you get a set strong enough for the weight, any will work.

Do you want plain wire struts? Oleos? Scale look or sport?

With due regard to sounding trite, "You pays your money and you takes your choice."

I'm looking for a set with plain wire struts. I assume the front one could be a firewall mount with 100 or 105 degrees of travel so the nose wheel would retract fully. All the SpringAir stuff i have seen apeers to be for a kit (P51, AT6, etc.) Do they have a generic set with plain struts?

Quinton:

Their web site is here:

http://www.retracts.com/

And figuring out what they are saying can be a royal pain.

For the Super Duellist, as near as I can make out, the 102HD, the 301, or the 305 would work nicely. But I would strongly suggext getting them on the phone and being sure before laying the plastic down.

ChuckAuger has worked with them more than I have, maybe he will come in and advise. How 'bout it, CA?

Bill.

No, I've tried to decipher the website more than once, but have never bought any retracts. I can't tell a lick of difference between the different series based on the descriptions. But, this plane isn't anything that would require special retracts. I think the 101HD (3 Gear, Firewall mount, 3/16" strut for planes up to 15 lbs) sounds like it might be the ticket. But 15lbs might be optimistic...the 1/5th scale 402 would be a beefier set-up for only $100 more...but it doesn't give any particulars about firewall or flat nose gear.

I'd sure call (I am!) and get them to fax the cut sheets of the different versions before I just buy something off the sparse descriptions given on their page.

FYI

I already have emailed Spring Air and they recommended the 202HD. I purchased them from Sheldon's for $119.

Later,

Jerry

Thanks, Jerry. Did they say what the difference was between the 100 series and 200 series?? Also, is their "flat mount" nose gear a belly mount?? I was thinking the firewall mount would be more to my liking, but if I could see how the flat mount mounts, I might change my mind..

Well after quite a bit more reserch the 202HD spring air is a belly mount nose gear, which means you would have to put in hardwood rails between F1 and F2 similar to how the main gear mounts. The 101HD is a firewall mount nose gear. Useing a firewall mount would require either cutting a new F1 former out of say 3/16" ply or filling the current hole in F1 ( see pic of F1 ) and adding a ply doubler where the gear mechanism mounts. Either way its going to take a little work. For now i'm probably going to try the firewall mount. Another thing to think about is if you are going to do a gear door on the nose using a firewall mount and not having those hardwood rails in the might make it a little easyer to work out a hingeing system, etc.

Another option is Robart gear, the 500 series is rated 8-18 pounds were as the Springairs are up to 15 pounds. Robart has dimension drawing on their website for most all the retracts #550W1 for the mains and #561RS in the nose. www.robart.com

Not much more construction from the last pic but thats only because i spend all my time trying to decide on retracts and engines.

Blind Pilot:

The Super Duellist 2/60 Mk II is curently in limbo, our consortium ha no plan to produce more.

Northeast Aerodynamics, the producer of the Twin-Air series kits, has the intention of kitting the plane commercially as the Duel-Air 2/60, the last I heard indicated its being available later this year.

You can go to their web site:
www.ne-aero.com
and ask about it.

Bill.

Are you still taking orders for the Duellist 2-60 kits? The postings I have read are a year old.

If the price is still around $170 , put me down for one. Please advise.
