I would have to go with #1. I'm really intrested in trying foam, but I don't what kind to use or where to get it. Anyway the scotch in me is really rebelling at the thought of tossing all those balsa shavings after carving the blocks. I probably would try built-up using 1/4" chunks.

I don't think we should saddle these guys putting in all the work to get this off the ground with having different options for each kit. Make them all the same. I don't think #2 should be considered.

Another thing, if we keep the price low enough, I just might have to get 2.

John

Good lumber yards Used to, an was.....available in 4" X 4" X 4' an bigger if needed, you check for density and pick what you want. Just for us guys who wanted to slab it ourselves. Be forewarned that it's not contest grade.

Could "maybe" include blue or green foam as packing in the kit, then of course florist type green foam is available at Wally Mart.

I have to go with Nr 1 for my choice.

I say keep the price of the kit down and leave the blocks out (or make them an option). I may end up trying the foam alternative.

#1 is dandy by me...I'm very good at shaping balsa, know where to buy it, and have no problem with these large chunks being left out for me to buy separately.

FLYBOY:
You know I have some of that blue foam, but never even dawned on me to try to cover it!! The iron is heating up as we speak!!

If I like the way it covers I'll buy some of that and use it, so again #1 makes sense to me.

Really the large blocks are a significant part of a Duellist of any size, but they are one of the things that concern me less than just about any other.

And a note to ehfleming:
Great work so far, Earnest. Please don't take any of my criticisms personally. I think you are doing a fine job, but model builders are a stubborn lot..set in their ways. Finding one kit to satisfy 2 dozen people is a huge stretch.

One thing for certain..you ain't gonna see a Super Duellist ARF on the shelf in every hobby shop in the world..this thing is gonna be a work of love by people who love to build. And I think it will be spectacular!

Note to William Robison:
This thing is taking off..new orders coming in daily! It seems like the masses were wanting a larger twin with the sexy lines of the Duellist. Just wait til pics of one hit a glossy mag....I sure am glad you are the secretary! LOL

I think back to my reply to ehfleming in the original thread...something like, "I bet the price would be better if we ordered two instead of one"..LOL what an understatement that seems now.

HI All.....ain't this great ??? I cud go for #1....or #2......or #1......or....oh nuts....I guess I'm lleeeaaannninggg to #1 even tho finding the blocks cud be difficult around here. I do agree that all kits shud be done the same, but....if supplying the blocks didn't cause to much trouble, it would be appreciated.

Can I be any more wishy-washy than that????

Great job guys,
And that's no lie.....

P.S. Bill, please change my order to 2-kits......thanxx...

Them ain't blocks! LOL

Balsa USA only show up to 3X3X6"

Here is a place that has 4X4X48", and even have a limited supply of contest balsa..The regular blocks (from both places) are dang reasonable, the contest is a little higher, but compared to making FG molds and the like, still dang cheap in my book.

http://www.superiorbalsa.com/

Like I said, blocks are the least of my worries!!

Bill:

I'll vote for excluding the blocks and making them local purchase. Heck I only live 20 miles from Lone Star Balsa and they always provide "gifts" for our fly-ins.

How about this. If anyone is interested, I could drop by Lone Star some day and see if they would make us a deal. I would need to know the quantities per block size, dimensions. I could try to pick the blocks for the density required. Although I don't consider myself to be an expert, I used to build free flight models and I still stop by Lone Star to hand pick all of my balsa for critical projects. Heck, if Riley was there I might be able to get him to help. Once selected, I could see about leaving the blocks with Trish at Lone Star and then each of the guys that wanted blocks could arrange for them to be shipped directly to the individuals requiring them. I could bundle the blocks by shipsets and let Trish shop them.

Any thoughts.

Ed

P.S. I only have two qualifiers. First is that I would do my best to select the wood as requested but you have to agree not to shoot me if my selection is not perfect. Second, my job requires that I travel on short notice, so there could be a timing issue if you needed the blocsk while I was on travel.

Put me down for a kit. A two piece wing should be okay with me. Trying to get 86 inch of balsa into a four door can be a pain. As for blocks or form I would go with #3. My thinking is that you could build some of the block areas out of sheet topped off with a smaller block. Also as a kit buyer I would rather have a kit that is as complete as possible and not have to buy this and that wood later. Would be nice if some company like Wings could knock out a few canopies.

Option #1 or #2 is good, I like to select my wood density and quality myself, a long time scratch builder. Keep up the good effort, can't wait to get started.

Ed, here's the list as posted by EHF, I've aded the quantities, I think I have them right.

2 - wing tips- 12 1/2x2x2
2 - nacelle cowls - 6x4x1/2
1 - nose block - 5x4x5
1 - canopy block- 4x6x2
4 - nacelle back blocks - 3x4x4
2 - nacelle bottoms - 15x4x1
- These last are structural, but an easy sub with plywood sheet will allow foam to fill the shape.

nose wheel well blocks -11x1x3/4
- These are structural, have to have them, to be included in all kits.

Ernest, if I've made an error here please scream at me.

Arguing wood or foam,
. Bah! I'm going home.

Huh? I AM home!

Bill.

If you REALLY want to do this plain and simple, offer a short kit. I'd be happy with laser-cut ribs, formers and firewalls and a good set of plans (all x2!). The rest could be done as a list, and everyone could use balsa, foam, butcher paper, coroplast and papier mache' to their hearts content.

I like option 2. I haven't done much with foam but
might give it a go with help/advice from the folks
here.
